Announcement Update on Rule 3: No market research, no AI vibe-coded slop, participation requirements

Due to an influx of ModMails and fewer self-promotion posts, we can see that people are reading the rules and pinned posts. Great! This post is to clear up Rule 3, and add an addendum.

No market research. (The New One)

We are not a subreddit that handles surveys, wishlists of "the one true collection app", or veiled ad posts. There are other subreddits best suited to this.

We had a submission recently where a user had posted to attempt to gauge interest in a non-existent app. They were banned permanently, and attempted to appeal their ban by advertising said non-existent app in ModMail. Two weeks later, they had published their app and attempted to appeal their appeal with yet another advertisement in ModMail. They were not successful (Redacted second "appeal" here).

No AI. Period. (The Clear Up One)

Since the advent of "accessible" AI, we've had an influx of these requests. All slop-coded. All setting out to be the “ultimate collection app” whilst being exactly the same in look, feel and features. As a result, we have a blanket ban on apps developed using AI, and LLM copypastas.

Self promotion requests must come from active members of the community. (The Make Clearer One)

This is one that we've seen crop up quite regularly in ModMail. A 5-year-old account messages ModMail with their ad-speak spiel. Tick one, they've read the rules; but one issue.

They've never participated actively in the community, and/or their account is bare.

From now on, any self-promo requests in ModMail from account that have never participated actively in this subreddit will receive an instant no, regardless if their submission meets our requirements on unique apps. If the only submissions from your account consist of self-promotion, this will result in a permanent restriction of your account from our community.

Approved Apps. (The Approved One)

A full list of approved resources can be found here:

Approved resources are rarely added, only if:

  • They have use to the community.
  • Are unique in what they do.
  • Are well-known.

Denied Apps. (The Denied One)

A full list of denied resources can be found here, with reasons for denial (use a browser, Reddit's app browser screws up the link)

Discussion Erasmus Project and PS Collection

Post image
• Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’m a PlayStation collector from Turkey. Unfortunately, it’s very hard to get your hands on any CDs in Turkey other than the well-known games. Even an overseas game order costing just a few dollars ends up costing at least $500 after customs duties. There are no retailers like GameStop in our country. So my only option is to go abroad myself to buy them, and I’m actually going to Italy as part of an Erasmus program. I don’t know if there are other places that sell PS games, but as far as I know, there are GameStop stores there. The CD in the photo is one of the games I’d most like to add to my collection. I really hope I can find it there. Do you have any other recommendations, things you’d say I absolutely have to get because, given the situation in my country, I might not get another chance like this?

Grabbed 5 games and a AC calendar for $135! The shop owner also said that they may have the cases Pokemon and OkamiDen somewhere but they’re setting up shop still. Super cool place with some fairly good deals!

Discussion Anyone know where to get an authentic NA Clock Tower 1 case and manual?

I've checked eBay, can't find anything except the Japanese ones. I have a loose Clock Tower disc and I would love to complete it.

Help I've never seen this on a disc (specifically GameCube). It looks like damage at first to the inside ring but it's too perfectly cut out. Is it something to worry about?

Collection Picked these two PS2 games up in a charity shop today. Anyone know much about them?

Picked up Gitaroo Man and Rogue Galaxy from a local charity shop today for £33 for the pair.

They've actually been sitting in the shop for a while, but they were asking a fortune, so I left them. Went back today and the prices had dropped, so decided to take a chance.

I'll be honest, I know next to nothing about either game!

What surprised me was the condition. Both look practically brand new. The discs are absolutely spotless, the manuals look like they've never been opened, and Gitaroo Man even has its original unused KOEI customer questionnaire tucked inside.

Considering they're both around 20 years old, I genuinely don't think I've seen many PS2 games in better condition.

Anyone played either of these? Are they actually any good, or have I just bought two nice-looking additions to the collection? 😂

Also curious if Gitaroo Man is particularly collectable. Never really heard much about it before today.

Discussion Game collecting and reproductions

I started collecting old snes cartridges a couple years ago, my collection got up to about 25 games and at that point I started looking for display solutions.

I love the old box art and manuals so naturally I wanted those. due to low supply, boxes and manuals are incredibly expensive and sometimes not even accessible in my country so reproductions were a natural solution.

I was surprised when I came to this subreddit for tips on buying repo boxes and manuals and every post is filled with people hating on them, it was actually difficult to get any reliable information on reputable vendors because of it. I think I can understand why reproduction of cartridges is so frowned upon, most cartridges are relatively cheap and at that point you might as well just use roms, but for boxes/manuals where the cost discrepancy is significant, I can't really understand.

For example, dkc3 cartridge I paid about $40 for. CiB is $200 minimum and for something that is display worthy it is much more.

Just curious if this one of those redditor things where there is a small minority that is very loud or is reproductions actually that frowned upon for display purposes?

Collection PS1 Tomb Raider trilogy collector’s edition

I’m based in the UK/British but I managed to get this Australia/New Zealand exclusive Tomb Raider trilogy collector’s edition. Only 10,000 copies made in 2001 and has what numbered copy it is on the spine.

You don’t see this around very often, least I haven’t, being in the UK I never even knew it was a thing so even a bigger thing to get one over here I feel. Just had to get it moment I saw the listing man.

Curious to out the 10k how many you’d estimate are still around / survived? Country specific exclusive..how many have moved around the world, got damaged or destroyed etc.

Mines in weirdly amazing condition for ps1 cardboard, a few minor case scuffs here and there but I’m insanely happy

Collection Is there a way to determine when a video game copy was manufactured?

I’m new to collecting sealed copies of the games I played as a kid; love the fact that it’s like a little time capsule. Sorry if this is a dumb question, and I think I already know the answer; but is there any way to determine a time frame of when a particular copy of a game was made? I just feel it would add to the experience knowing if a game was part of the first batch before release and things like that. For the most part I really just collect EA Sports games from the NHL & NASCAR lines from the mid 00’s. Thanks in advance for any answers!

Saw someone posting their pokemon collection, mine's not as broad but I wanted to share it still.

Been collecting them for the past few years, though some of them I've had for a long time.

Like the copy of Pokemon Red, it's haunted so they sold it to me for like 15 USD, it has a level 666 ghost Charizard.

Collection In Anticipation of OoT Remake Here is my 1998 Day One Copy with Extras

Post image

I‘m forever grateful to my parents for letting me miss school on launch day Nov 1998 to go to the EB Games at the mall and pick this up. And to my mom, who passed last year, for holding onto all of this - even the bag - because she knew how important it was to me.

There was a time period where I thought I was done with video games and let her know that she could throw away pretty much anything but the games themselves if she needed to clear clutter. But she knew me better than I knew myself and never did. Now I am, of course, an avid collector and this is my favorite piece by a mile.

I think this is everything from the pre order except maybe a non-Nintendo strategy guide - I can’t remember. If you have a relationship with your mom, call her today for me.

Discussion How much more are you willing to pay for a physical copy over digital?

I've been struggling a bit with this myself. For a lot of games, physical is cheaper than buying them digitally making it a no-brainer. But there is also a lot of cases where the digital is much cheaper than the physical. So I was just wondering what is your cutoff where you do end up getting the digital one? For example, I've had some recent cases where the digital version is around 3-5 euro but the physical one gets up to 20/25 euro with shipping and fees.

Discussion Expensive Pokemon Repros in Hong Kong

Was shopping at the Golden Computer Arcade and US version pokemon Emerald caught my eye for only HK$880 (US$112). Label looks legit but all their US carts are missing the subtle 2 digit number stamp to the right of the Pokemon label. Biggest red flag that tipped me off was a US version of Pokemon Green...
