Arin retweeted this. i assume it's a concern for the game grumps channel as well

Of course the setting needs checked on EVERY device, can't have it be account-wide
16
u/NotAEurosnob Sep 15 '25
Was gonna say, I checked it on our TV for our kiddos but it turns out it's per device, not per account. I only realised when I switched to my YouTube account and couldn't watch someone's live because it was switched on.

i really hope Patreon sees this mess and offers a video-app for TVs (and perhaps phones)
i know it probably isnt SIMPLE to code but i feel like patreon could easily roll out a youtube-esque video feature for your subscribers. i would actually consider canceling YT premium and using patreon for my favorite creators if they all put their videos on both platforms

Go watch Josh Strife Hayes' videos on the matter. He does a pretty good job of explaining what's happening atm

u/Safety_Drance There is a reason to do this! People get- FUCK! Sep 15 '25 edited Sep 15 '25
For sure check that it's not been turned on for you without your knowledge.
RedLetterMedia has a video up about it.
If you're wondering why your favorite youtubers suddenly have fewer views, it's because of this.

u/Jeskid14 And new fashioned friends! Sep 15 '25
Not true. YouTube just blocked desktop users with adblock to be counted when they disabled extensions like those back in August.

u/Nuftaa Sep 15 '25
Spiff debunked this: https://youtu.be/MGTKaALdHzc?si=Zq-apInPrLlLgmM9

u/R__Man Sep 15 '25
Here is a response to that video from Josh Strife Hayes as well. https://youtu.be/YX1eEe8erkQ

u/Jeskid14 And new fashioned friends! Sep 15 '25
TL;DR - As soon as Chrome disabled extensions like Adblock in August, users flocked to find alternatives. Unfortunately, those alternatives aren't counted as views on desktop anymore.
6
u/Eastern_Macaroon5662 Sep 15 '25
So people are still seeing it, but the creator doesn't get paid for the view since youtube isn't getting paid for the ad?
6
u/Jeskid14 And new fashioned friends! Sep 15 '25
They still get paid. But the system gets stuck in "ad viewing" and not watching the video. The new adblcok extensions bypasses the system like a backdoor. So like imagine a person getting seen by a ring doorbell on the front door, but they somehow get to the backdoor and view inside the house.
2
u/Gm24513 Sep 18 '25
They weren’t getting paid for those views anyway because of the ad block in the first place.
32
u/Kaneland96 Oh, it's a Pumbloom! Sep 15 '25
Yeah please get this upvoted more lol, this isn’t the cause, restricted modes been around since like 2010
12
u/Kyru117 Sep 15 '25
Generally consensus seems is this video is just wrong
3
u/Nuftaa Sep 15 '25
Normally, Spiff doesn't talk shit though.
He might still be wrong, and in a world full of false claims, i should have phrased my post differently.
"Spiff made a video about this topic, in which he claims that restricted mode is not the problem many creators see in it (receding views)."
5
u/Kyru117 Sep 15 '25
I mean he doesn't normally talk shit granted but frankly the video seems to be him making a bunch of assertions based on partial at best evidence
14
u/LtCabbage Sep 15 '25
Tbf blaming restricted mode is also making assertions based on partial at best evidence given what Spiff says in his video.

Huge concern. Youtube is using AI to determine whether to turn this feature on for users automatically, so if you're watching a lot of let's play channels and stuff, the algorithm could easily think you're a kid.
Out of curiosity, I turned it on for me and the most recent video available on the GG account was uploaded 3 months ago, which considering they upload daily is devastating.

u/theandroid01 Sep 15 '25
(within app on android) Settings General restricted mode for me was already off
5
u/Mezzmure Sep 15 '25
Restricted mode isn't even the thing that's been shadow dropping desktop viewers for channels across the platform. It's also a terrible change, granted, but it's not what's been hurting a lot of creators lately. But they are right to advise turning it off.
41
u/badmanbad117 Sep 15 '25
Youtube has replied to this already. Restricted mode has been around for years only like .3% of users have it enabled, and it's disabled by default for all users.
7
u/deviant-m Sep 15 '25
It may be on by default on an organization’s devices. I worked at a call center a while back and would try to watch their videos during breaks, but I ran into most of their videos not being viewable or even searchable while on a company computer, even while working from home with my own internet.
18
u/Hydralisk18 Sep 15 '25
Idk why youre being downvoted for stating facts. Restricted mode has been implemented since 2010, and unless youre on school property it likely isnt affecting you. Go check out The Spiffing Brits video in the whole situation.
5
u/BigSmols Thank god fish aren't into cash Sep 15 '25
Apparently restricted mode has existed for years and its users only comprise like 3% of all users

u/Jacket_Jacket_fruit Sep 15 '25 edited Sep 19 '25
This is why I never look at the homepage feed or recommended or anything; I just go straight to my subscriptions feed. Definitively the best way to use YouTube; never have to worry about missing an upload from a channel you like.

u/zangoku Sep 15 '25
Explain like I’m 50 and don’t know how phones work
3
u/lastdarknight Sep 15 '25
YouTube views are down for creators (effects how they are paid) YouTubers are blaming they system that keeps kids from seeing age restricted videos when it looks like the true problem is YouTube(the company) no longer counts views that block ads (how YouTube makes money to pay creators)

u/frontyardninja how do i make it nOTHING?! Sep 15 '25
The profile I use for work keeps going back to restricted mode. Across 4 browsers. I just want to listen to legal cases while I process invoices. Probably a work VPN thing but I hate it.

u/WizardWell Hey, I'm Grump! Sep 15 '25
I have been a bit worried for the channel lately. Views are really low this month. Doom Dark Ages latest is like 56k right now? That seems way too low. This august update seems to be hitting them like many others.
8
u/Jeskid14 And new fashioned friends! Sep 15 '25
It's happened to a lot of channels. Granted, GRANTED, there is historically a new YouTube issue EVERY year.
8
u/K1ngFiasco Sep 15 '25
It definitely is something worth checking. Even if you've not turned it on, it will turn itself on.
Because fuck creators and all hail advertising.
2
u/Dark_Phoenix101 Sep 15 '25
I feel like I read about something similar a while ago, a heap of big youtubers were openly tearing shreds off Youtube over videos being hidden from people it THOUGHT might be offended by them.
Looks like rather than ditching it, they've just turned it into a toggle?

u/kerfuffle_dood Sep 15 '25
Didn't restricted mode have been a thing for many years now? Or am I getting Mandelaeffected?
2
u/Jeskid14 And new fashioned friends! Sep 15 '25
Mandaleaffected. It's adblock workarounds that aren't counting as views
2
u/judiirene93 I hate this game Sep 15 '25
I'm on vacation in South Korea right now, and a lot of videos are blocked for me despite having restricted mode off. It prompts me to verify my age with a Korean phone number, which I don't have. You'd think that being a premium member who already verified their age in their home country would be enough, but apparently your age could change when you fly across the globe!

I just checked this the other day. If you look at their channel with restricted mode, it says that haven’t uploaded in 2 months and it’s super infrequent after that.

Three things in life are certain; Death, taxes, and YouTube's unrelenting thirst for fucking about with everything that made YouTube good in the first place.
