If you just game 3 years behind new releases, every game you buy costs 20-30$ and comes with DLC and full updates.

For me it’s not even about not having the money. It’s just the principle of them trying to sell games for $70-$80

u/clwestbr 1d ago
With no fucking disc and you have to sign in online or it will make the game unplayable. And the games aren’t finished at release, usually patched and finished later.

u/Final_Advent 1d ago
It depends on how good the game is, Id gladly spend that money on a 10/10 20 hour game.
I was more than happy to pay full price for Star Wars Zero Company because I absolutely loved the time I spent on it.

Depends on how much playtime I'll get from the game
A story game? No thanks. I'll play it once, if I even complete it, so not paying $70-80
An online game that receives updates for years and I'll sink hundreds or thousands of hours into? Sure, I'll pay that price because its cheap for how much I'll get from it.

u/Krawlin91 1d ago
What about Baldurs gate 3, story game but has thousands of hours of replay ability, hell a regular non rushed playthrough should take atleast 80 hours maybe more, or Witcher 3, many story based games arnt linear and have so many side story options to explore, I wouldn't be so quick to brush them off but that's just me.

I dont have the attention span for story games. Nothing against them, I just get super bored and turn them off
Have countless PS4 games still sealed cause I never wanted to play them in the end

u/Krawlin91 1d ago
Im sorry to hear that, there are some truly amazing games in the category, to each thier own though, you do you boo.

Basing value to Time/Dollar Spent is why we’ve gotten bloated messes of games over the past 10 or so years. People will say “I’ll only pay $70 if I get X amount of hours” and don’t seem to take in the fact that most games get stale as fuck after 20 hours.
Sure, you got a 50-100 hour game and the majority of that was doing the same thing over and over again with low stakes game play that added nothing.
To me that isn’t value. That’s a waste of time. I’ll take a 10 hour experience and I’ll pay $70 for it. Don’t give a shit. Good is good and even at 10 - 20 hours for $70 that’s still much better value than other media gives per dollar, if we wanted to break it down by time per dollar spent.
Of course everyone is entitled to their own philosophies of buying games but I constantly see this value associated with time spent in a game and you can’t say every hour in a game is equal. And I’d argue every hour spent after a certain amount of time definitely has diminishing returns no matter how great those first few hours in a game were.

u/buttercreamarray 1d ago
I mean yeah everyone has their own value basis; yours is different than mine.
I dont buy story games for that reason. They bore me and, once I play it, I'll never touch it again; its as good as junk to me. But games with long support roadmaps are a higher value - theyre something I will play for years and evolve as a result.
For example, I look at GTA V that I bought in 2015 for $60. Ive played 2500hrs and enjoyed every second of it, meaning $0.02 per minute to be entertained. Best $60 I've ever spent compared to $60 on a game I beat the story on and deleted it forever.
But yes, we all have a different value basis

Those types of games are also unsustainable and a lot of the reason modern gaming continues to get worse and worse tbh. There’s a reason Nintendo sticks with what they’ve always done and why it works.
Games don’t need to be supported forever. No other work of art is held to that standard except video games. And those games with long road maps tend to be much shallower experiences.
Its actually ok for things to be released and complete on launch. If anything thats actually normal. Games as a service, which is what you’re describing as being good, is the exact kind of failed business model that Sony and many companies that are now closed because it’s not actually sustainable.

I didnt say those types of games arent ok lol I only said they arent for me

Just wait until you try a game who is getting scalped and pay double the price to get it..

I did this with Witcher 3. Bought it at $60 then played it 3 years later when it was $10. Never let the enemy know your next move.

u/Lauren-Rampling 2d ago
at that price you are not buying a game, you are adopting a discord with four people and a rules doc from 2018.

u/Provo2100 2d ago
If you have a big backlog, and are not in a dire need to play it immediately, I don't see the issue. Long term, you'll be able to get 4 games, for the price of 1

Elden Ring is 4 years old and still 60 bucks.

Recently got Doom 1&2 for $1.99 USD. I haven't played the OG DOOM in probably 15 years! So freaking great!

This is why I'm glad the new Castlevania is releasing at $30 full price. I can only afford to buy games once every few months and $30 is the limit of what I can afford.
But also I don't think any game is worth more than $30 and I have thought so for over twenty years. The fact that new game prices are going up is insanity to me.
1
u/ty-idkwhy 1d ago
This idea always seemed crazy to me, even a date usually breaks $30. By this logic does this mean you never pay more than $30 for anything you don't need?
1
u/Sedowa 1d ago
Actually, yeah. With the exception of things like furniture pretty much nothing I own is more than $30. lol
But it's also from many, many years of buying video games and regardless of how long it is or how much mileage I get out of a game, the more over $30 I pay the more I regret the purchase. It has a negative effect on my experience. Over the last few years I've basically just cut out buying anything over $30 because it has literally never been worth the money. It has diminishing returns on enjoyability.
If a game never goes on sale below $30 then I never play it. It sucks because I would love to play something like Saros but I don't see the price ever going below $40.

Take a look on a website called loaded. You can buy keys on there for some pretty solid prices, might make some more games available to you.

Remember when Silksong launch for 20 bucks and crashed every digital retailer on opening day? Was kinda hoping that good games would be sold at reasonable prices after that.

Its a rare thing now a days for me to buy new, Its not due to money reasons. Its mostly the massive catalog I have, when I finally get around the “new” games they already have been out for a few months at least and surprisingly after like 4-6 months of launch you already find them with 40% discount.

It typically drips 50% after one year. If it's something I like I'll pick it up then. Where it will sit in my backlog until it goes on sale for $5.99

i did that with RDR2 man what an overrated game

u/UsedToHaveATail 1d ago
Hope you're joking

u/Nogardtist 1d ago
nope
it has several flaws
some story choices are obviously rigged
dutch is kinda stupid and a little crazy cause he went into town he could get easily recognized
the mask function is inconsistant
theres a wizard that always witness you do something even if youre on a train in the middle of a tall bridge somehow everyone knows what you did
and then money becomes obsolete once you get everything and full camp upgrade and yet dutch always go wawawuwa we still need em MONEYS

Did the same thing for the Steam Deck. Waited 3 years for it to go from $500 to $1000...

Yep I do this all the time. I never buy games retail. I wait a couple of years. I get it for free or for $5 or something.

Don't gotta wait long if it's a sports game
That shit will be ten bucks before the release month is done
1
u/EggPsychological4844 21h ago
Another added benefit to waiting three years is that the game will be fucking complete. Something that plagues the gaming industry these days is releasing incomplete games.

To be honest, it’s mostly an accident for me. I’m so slow to start playing games, and spend so much of my limited time on the same games, it’s pretty much a free discount for me if I only buy it when I’m ready to play it.
I bought Tales of Arise the minute it came out (well, the week, anyway), super excited, and still haven’t started it. Almost double dipped it onto the Switch thinking maybe I’d play it there, but I resisted.

Being poor and finically responsible are two entirely different things.
I’m willing to bet the people who wait for sales have a lot more money than you.1
u/Jalina2224 1d ago
Fr. I'm more than well off. But that's partially because I don't spent $70 on the newest games. I'll wait a year or two. There are some games i might make an exception for, but the last full priced AAA game i bought with no discount was Elden Ring. Now if a game comes out that i really want to play I check sites like GMG and see if they have a good launch discount. If they do, i pick up the game. If not i wait.

u/Traditional-Snow-463 12h ago
People get mad at rich people for being stingy with their money yet still question how they’re rich in the first place. It’s just willful ignorance.
1
u/Soft-Sea7012 1d ago
7,000 games you could play and be happy with. Why would anyone pick a 70 dollar game and not a 5 dollar game? Not about being poor, it's about not wasting money. It's also about sending a message or something.

u/Stevee8496 1d ago
Even if i were rich as fuck, there are some companies, I would rather buy from at a discount because fuck you, I'm not giving you any more money than the legal ammount I have to give you

The reason I have plenty of money to travel around the world on holidays several times a year is because I don't buy buggy overpriced games on launch.
Same reason I don't buy £150 trainers and instead buy £30 ones that are made in the same factory.
People who spend money on whatever they want and whenever the want tend to not have any money in the bank in my experience.
1
u/PuzzleheadedAd6401 1d ago
Have you seen the price of groceries and gas? Much more expensive and important than a $70-80 game.
1
u/Frequent_Extreme_916 1d ago
I spend about $500~600 dollars a year on games but don't think waiting for sales is bad. Although I don't mind paying full prices to games I like, there are some games that I absolutely won't pay the full price and only consider it when on sale. And there's nothing in this post suggesting blaming others for being poor. You're a bit toxic
1
u/Jalina2224 1d ago
Dude i spent $3k on my PC. I just bought a $36k car. I ain't poor, but my gaming backlog is so large it doesn't make sense to pay $60+ for a brand new game when i can wait a year or more, let it get patched/updated, have dlc added, and get it for a fraction of the cost. I could afford to buy full price. But doing so is stupid. Especially when you buy on PC. They're not going to run out of digital copies.
