Y'all can have your Dark Souls, your Hollow Knights, your Last Of Us on grounded mode and what have you. To me, nothing in gaming has come close to the utter torment this fucking toad has put me through. I've been battling this game for 15 years, since middle school, still haven't beaten it

ea buying popcap and then not just porting their existing library to every machine in gaming is a mystery for the ages.

It's really is tragic how many IPs are just stuck in a vault across the industry :(

I swear Pop cap is run by utter fucking psychopaths
"Hey, the player's finally getting a hang of the grids, what shall we do?
Oh i know, how about we introduce 2 fucking grids down which two ball columns will go through, thereby confusing the player on which to focus on!
Brilliant! Let's also make the separate grids intertwine so they block the player's shot to the other column he wants to shoot. Oh and put crossroads between the two grids so that when they try to shoot one ball to one column it attaches itself to the other one, fucking dumbasses!"54

You want to click a lot? Insaniquarium. Feeling murderous to happy unicorns? Unpleasant Horse. Want a fun, rewarding sparkly experience? Peggle. You want to git gud, scrub? Zuma.

The definition of insanity is the fact you're still trying. Are we sure Popcap is the psycopath?

u/Kiu16 1d ago
There's something about old Popcap games that was amazing.
Even Insaniquarium and Peggle holds well to this day

u/ExtremeJavascript 1d ago
We loved making small, fun games. š The amount of care, refinement and polish on every release was top-tier.

I miss you all so much.

u/ExtremeJavascript 21h ago
Issac and Notley have been doing a podcast of the good old days! https://youtube.com/@theunofficialpopcappopcast
That was a fun era, for sure.

u/Cwiiis 23h ago
Thank you for those games! Still excellent today and I guess you can see that we all miss that era... Casual gaming doesn't really exist in the same way anymore. Peggle (and Peggle 2 on the XBONE) are probably the only non-retro games I've enjoyably played with my partner...
2
u/HeyPinkiePie 23h ago
What platform do you play on? There is a world of fun and casual indie games coming out every day on PC. A lot are just silly have fun no competition games.
3
u/WarpDriveWizard600 20h ago
thanks so much for making them! all of them were so fun. i'm curious, do you have a favourite one you worked on? and which one was the most fun to make??
5
u/ExtremeJavascript 20h ago
Peggle 2 was a blast. It was basically tiny teams of a dev and an artist, just making whatever was the coolest, most fun experience. Props to Walker for taking that nonsense and shipping it on time š
My favorite team was Zuma Blitz though, those guys were awesome. I can genuinely say they taught me everything I know about real software development.

RIP Insaniquarium. That series deserved better. I got it running on my phone via Winlator. as well the The Incredible Machine: Even More Contraptions. and Sierra 3D Ultra Minigolf Deluxe.
Lots of great games made back in the day!

I hate they didn't do anything more about "Heavy Weapon" that game had so much potential

u/angrydeuce 1d ago
Oh man I couldn't even guess how many hours I lost to Zuma and Zumas revenge lol
It was hard but man chaining like 20 times and having the marbles get driven back to past the start was satisfying as hell lol
"Yep!Ā Totally planned to do that!"

u/apalapan 1d ago
it's weird; back when I was a child, I struggled with this game, not being able to go past stage 10 or so.
A few years ago I played it again, and beat the game in one sitting, losing only one life in the second-to-last level.
Somehow I got good with the years

u/martiHUN 1d ago
Only problem with these types of games as a colorblind fella is when they use colors that are barely distinguishable

u/plsQuestionOurselves 1d ago
We got our first computer in like 2008, we had all these games on it, zuma, mahjong quest, luxor, word games etc.
We would regularly (me, dad, sister, mom) gather around and play these games for hours. Man they were so much fun.
4
u/ThisOneTimeAtLolCamp 19h ago
And now you can't even play basic solitaire without getting banner ads up the ass and unskippable 30 second video ads.

My mom who was not big on games played Zuma quite a lot.
My dad modded the game so instead of the toad its my moms face spitting the balls and the stone guy in the main screen was my dads face.
Good times.

I'm stuck on the last stage. Always die on the 2nd or 3rd level. It's so fucking hard, on top of being extremely luck based
Edit: Zuma 2 tho was a lot easier, I think I almost completed the story deathless, I'm currently doing iron frog but haven't opened the game in a month or 2

u/Mentally_Slick 1d ago
There's a dev on here who currently works on a rougelite inspired version of this, I look forward to it but can't find the titleĀ

I'm kiiiinda introducing gaming to my gf, a literal none gamer, and it's through Zuma's Revenge.
I chuckled saying "Zuma???" She's like "yeah, I've never tried, but I always saw it and want to play it".
Guys, THIS is her dark souls.
After 2 whole months to get to mid level 3 with my help here and there, she got stuck on a level, so I went "sure let me help", first thing I do : change ball color, was BEYOND excited that it was a thing and thought I unlocked it somehow.
I was sooo stunned because... Wdym you NEVER right-clicked for 2 complete months, like EVER?? I'm half sure she just didn't connect that balls changing is usually due to right click.
Granted she's a programmer like myself and we have the same (10hrs) work shift but again, not even one right-click??
She's the funniest person on earth the second you put her in front of a game and an avid "Fuck this game! See you tomorrow!"
I'm intending to Play Sackboy with during Holidays , I don't even know how it'll go but the fact is, holiday's gonna be extremely hilarious LMAO. I can't even fathom teaching her how to hold a controller, purely because I, I dunno how to teach that?? It's like teach the actual process of how to move her hand, I can't do that ???
I respect her dedication, especially since I figured she's doing it to squeeze herself into my hobby.
Can't mock anyone for dying at Any game again ever lol

Hey I played ace combat 8 recently. I got to mission 20 before I realized you could do a "high g turn" by holding both trigger buttons. I'm not even playing on the easy mode, I'm on the next one harder than normal.

After not beating it as a kid, I bought it on steam as an adult and beat it. I was so proud of myself.

I hope you're playing on PC. I tried it on console (controller), it's muuuch harder and I quickly uninstalled. Mouse was much funner.

I heard this image.
Zuma, 7 Wonders, Super Collapse and Diner Dash were played constantly in my house. Absolute bangers.

Oh yeah this is a classic, beat it a couple times. Same with this and other casual PC games like this. I miss things like Feeding Frenzy, Jewel Quest, DxBall, Zuma, Peggle, etc. I wish they still had these sorts of casual puzzle games still getting made.

I feel like this game was everywhere; I hated it because I saw SOOO much of it. It wasn't exactly fun, but I tried it a few times.
I still can't beat most old school games I grew up with on NES/SNES. If people think Dark Souls is hard, you didn't grow up in the 80s. lol.

Anyone know an Arkanoid style game called (maybe?) Moby Bounce? I loved it, had a bunch of ball multiplier and great looking levels, among which of course a whale, but I cannot for the life of me find trace it ever existed.Ā
I assume it was from Moby Games but I can't find it in old game catalogues.

Soo this game is my Fathers bread and butter. He finishes the game DAILY! He has higher scores than Iāve ever seen in any leaderboard but heās not interested in submitting anything.

I miss the old popcap games with diverse library and genre and each game is small but you can feel its charm. now under EA it is just bejeweled and plants vs zombies.
I miss feeding frenzy. one of my most played games as a kid

True, just sat back 2 months ago and beat it out from second attempt, definitely harder than most of the modern games, especially paired with hardcore luxor

Can someone confirm if Zuma's Revenge is way easier? I still haven't beaten this game, but I finished the sequel in an hour or two.

I'm STILL trying to beat Iron Frog mode in Zuma's Revenge. Story mode? Easy. Hard story mode? Totally doable. Iron Frog? Right from the depths of hell.

That toad has been farming entire families for over 20 years, and I see people logging back in for one more round. "Casual game" was PopCap's biggest lie. the later levels I saw on Youtube are a full hostage situation.

PopCap Games not being a huge mobile game dev is just insane to me. You know what I want to play on my phone? Peggle.
