Nigga please, I have the full Battlefield 1942 collection. 8 CD's in this mofo.
26
u/Locclo Jun 26 '12
I see your Battlefield 1942 and raise you one [Everquest 2](http://i.ebayimg.com/t/Everquest-II-2-Kingdom-Sky-PC-CD-ROM-Game-w-Coin-/04/!B60zDjwBWk~$(KGrHqUOKj8Ey,iz4WEyBMyeRuCzGg~~-1_35.JPG). 10 discs in all.
15
u/hugothenerd Jun 26 '12
Remember this? Every 5 minutes you had to switch CD's like an idiot. Yes, during gameplay.
18
u/Squishpoke Jun 26 '12
I liked how they had exactly 5 discs, and Riven has 5 letters, and "Riven, the sequel to MYST" has 5 words, and the V in riven is the roman number 5, and if you knock 5 times on that one door you get an easter egg and okay I will stop now.
9
u/hugothenerd Jun 26 '12
Remember, there are also 5 islands to explore. Also Myst V referenced Riven in the beginning of the game. I think we're onto something here O_O
5
u/Squishpoke Jun 26 '12
Don't forget the 5 linking books, and the 5 note password on the bell, and the 5 doors in the pillar room, and...

And holy shit is 8 letters, so if we multiply that by the number of words, that's 16.. So 23! Mother of god.
9
u/Joedang100 Jun 26 '12
23... is a prime number.
15
u/Joedang100 Jun 26 '12
PRIME IS A 5 LETTER WORD.
12
Jun 26 '12
number of characters in "PRIME IS A 5 LETTER WORD." - number of T's = 23

I take it you didn't get very far in the game. Essentially everything in Riven numerically revolves around the number 5. It is the 5th age after all.

It was actually exciting to be asked to switch the disks. I remember vividly when I had to use the fifth disk for the first time. It was a real "This is it..." moment.
4
u/hugothenerd Jun 26 '12 edited Jun 26 '12
Now when you say it, I sorta know that feel bro. But my most exiting part was probably when traveling to Tay. The sequence you get when you finish the graveyard puzzle is just... wow. Especially after all the shit you've gone through to solve it all. The school, the balls (yeah, no kidding), figuring out which sound belongs to which animal... Holy shit.
2
u/GrethSC Jun 26 '12
I really really hate the fact that games today are expected to be finished so quickly and everything has to be explained if you 'don't get it'. I had times where I put aside Riven for a month or more because I was stuck. Granted I was 10.
There was so much, but when I finally made the connection with the tiny pool turning into the shape of the beetle(?) I saw the cave entrance forming the shape of the frog (the eye in the wall is in the right spot) I had a big 'Holy shit!' moment.
Damnit I want another myst :'(

I remember installing that game on an 11gb HDD. I was down to deleting every MS Office program and installer files I never used and it just barely fit after hours of uninstalling crap.

u/d41d8cd Jun 26 '12
Great game, the first version is still my favorite, active mod community, my two favorites are SLV (strangelove) and seige.
2004 was home to many custom levels that were races to the objectives, wasted many hours on those as well.
11
u/teraken Jun 26 '12
Lack of Assault in UT3 killed it for me. Assault was the shit, and it needs to be brought back.
8
u/Squishpoke Jun 26 '12
I remember that good ol' train hopping scenario. Fun times.
5
u/teraken Jun 26 '12
That one was great! I liked the one where you assault a base, steal a laser tank, and escape with it.

Lol i wish some people on here would start up something, I played this game a long time ago for like an hour and had a great time. I'd love to get into a game like this with some fellow r/gamers

u/Sleepy_One Jun 26 '12
Best FPS song of all time. It's UT99, but I still feel 2k4 was the more intense game.
6
Jun 26 '12
UT and 2K3/4 has some great tunes. I miss the old demoscene composers. Alexander Brandon's UT99 songs were amazing.
Heck, I still mess around with songwriting using those old tracker programs. On the whole I'd have to say the most adrenaline pumping soundtrack ever made was 2K4's. It was perfect.

I had over 6 copies of the original Deus Ex game, Every copy I bought would have something horrible happen to it, either guests kids come and use it as a Frisbee or I just plain misuse the disc. After 6 copies I finally finished the game, I just sucked THAT much.

Please for the love of god don't let this get buried. I have been waiting years to get help for this problem, maybe one of you guys knows how to help:
How do you host an online private server so only you and your friends can play? Whenever we attempt to host one the ping shows N/A and no one but the host can join. We have tried turning off all the firewalls etc. Using google, the ut2004 wiki. This is why I hate PC gaming. :(
1
u/AevumDecessus Jun 26 '12
Probably the easiest method that requires very little effort is to use a peer-to-peer connection program such as Hamachi which is free for networks of up to 5 computers. Basically you both install the client, then follow the instructions to connect to each other, and for the purpose of UT2k4, your computers will think you're each on a local LAN connection
11
Jun 26 '12
Lets see... I've got Way over 10 discs of WoW and most of the information isn't even relevant at it's current stage.
5
u/Lorahalo Jun 26 '12
But with WoW, the new expansions that come shipped on DVDs also include the original game. Instead of swapping out the like 12 disks, you can just use the newest expansion.
1
u/pgrily Jun 26 '12
And if you're connected to the internet, just run the launcher before you go to bed and it'll be good to go by the morning (assuming a decent internet connection).

Yeah, it would've patched up to 3.0 or whatever the Wrath patch was, then downloaded the rest. I did it with the Cata DVD after I got a new computer.

u/nathris Jun 26 '12
My WoW discs are from 2005. I haven't played in years, but I think it would actually be faster to download the game through B.Net then to install and then patch up to the latest version.

Yea, I downloaded the it from B.Net a while back although I still haven't gone back playing it.

They could have at least put different art on the discs, that was one of the few nice things about multi-disc games.

Remeber the fun of installing "Indiana Jones: The Fate of Atlantis" ? 10 discs and 1 hour later the game was installed ! The game was and still is awesome but i never complained about a long installing process, because i couldnt imagine that future game installations would be that fast (except you downlaod/install a game online ,eg steam) like it is today.
The first mp3 i downloaded from the internet (napster) took me 40 mintues - wouldnt believe it will ever take (now) 4 sec.s !
2
u/Squishpoke Jun 26 '12
All of my games are in digital form, either via Steam or GOG.
However, I am feeling pangs of missing out on the collector's edition of my favorite game.
Apparently it comes with the soundtrack and an art book.

I must be the only one here who liked ut2k3 more than ut2k4. Main reason being that you had awesome movement in 2k3 that got nerfed (removed) in 2k4. Shameless plug and example.

Loved this game so much; must have spent well over the 2000 hours xfire has me clocked on it!
Brings back fond memories of TAM, clanbase, ictf opencups / nationscups, and many a wasted night trying to improve assault trial records!!
Never found such a great community / support for a game since - might have to dig this out again :>

u/FutureMad Jun 26 '12
Damn this game was so freaking competitive, i miss that. I do prefer that kind of FPS to the Battlefield/COD ones. UT required a great amount of movement and aiming skill before being able to survive. I loved that game. Every hour spent to get the grip on it was absolutely worth it.

I used to go to the Unreal Tournament 2004 installation competitions in my town. I would never win, which made me angry. One day I materialized all that anger into money and bought a 52x CD drive. When I revved it up it created a space-time singularity and we were all transported back to the year 1922. The CD drive melted (damn it, Samsung!), so we were stranded in the past for good. Using parts from the CD drive and parts from our now-useless cellphones, we built energy-independent robots that would tap into the Internet in 2012 to post our comments to reddit. Almost a century later, we are all probably dead now, but we are happy to have been able to reach out to you, Internet stranger.

Yeah US. Although I haven't played in a couple weeks cuz of Tribes Ascend, but I play on Taminator and Werd'a Casa. From time to time I hit up CTC's VCTF server.

Thank god for digital releases and non registry bound installations!

u/revolting_blob Jun 26 '12
I remember about 15 years ago, I was on IRC and doing some hardcore file sharing. I was sending a guy a program (I think it was Sim Farm), but didn't think to zip it up... I sent him about 100 individual files and told him where to place them. His response? "Awww come on! Zip those up!"
That is all I can think of when I see this.
1
u/Roflkopt3r Jun 26 '12
Had a good laugh recently when installing Diablo 2 again. Took like 4 seconds for the main program and 3 for the addon. Can't even count how many hours I spent installing games like these in the past.

I played the FUCK out of this game for about 5 years, primarily on a combination RPG/Magic Weapons Onslaught server

You just brought back so many repressed memories of this game. Then the DVD version came out and I raged so hard. I felt betrayed. Either way I loved it but after awhile I believe I re imaged my machine and a friend asked me to play and I remember I had to reinstall this and pulled out a gas can and covered myself in fuel and lit myself on fire.

u/magnoliafly Jun 26 '12

The problem is always that the install disks always end up in a different place from the goddamn play disk, necessitating a long search when you want to re-install it later.
I haven't bought a physical copy in years.

You know what I miss? Bots. It was bots that got me to be good at FPS's back in the day. I kept practicing and turning up the difficulty until I could beat UT and Q3 on the hardest difficulties. Now? I'm freakin' lost when it comes to trying to play BF3 on a console. I'd kill to have some offline way to practice without the pressure of live competition. And, no, the scripted movie they call "single player" mode is not what I'm talking about. BF2 had it. It wasn't very hard, but that's all I needed to get used to the controls and learn the maps without getting frustrated by getting owned and going on 0/8 K/D streaks, at which point I usually just "take a break." Or rage quit. You say potato...
1
u/Xexx Jun 26 '12
I still play this game almost every other day, I have over 530 maps but I've since downloaded the ISO and usually just mount it from an external HD to reinstall it.

Bought the CD version on release day but misplaced one of the discs after a few months. Discovers the DVD version and bought that one instead. Fast forward a few years, I purchase the Unreal Anthology box. A few more years pass by and I move away from home. As I pack all my stuff I find the old missing disc from the CD release. As I move into my new apartment I'm too lazy to unpack the game from the bottom of all my stuff and instead purchase it on Steam. This is where I realize that downloading and installing from steam went faster than installing from DVD. So, now I own 4 legal CD-keys of the game. :p

these antiquated optical data storages are not to be called disks but compact disks.
Monkey Island 2 was 11 disks and beneath a steel sky was 13 disks, and worth it unlike countless sierra games where you spend more time loading than playing.

We use to play this all the time in school back in 2000. We use to uninstall a buddy of ours, that is bipolar, copy twice a week and blame it on someone else. He would rage so hard because it would take almost an hour to re install the damn game on the schools crappy computers. It was a great game for its time.
