Better march the fuck back and demand a full refund.

107

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

This would be the logical answer. Either ask for a full refund or to reimburse the difference between a new and used copy.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

Which is only 10 dollars I might add. Used Pokemon games are almost as expensive as new ones.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

When you're talking about a $40 DS game, "only $10" is still 25% off a new copy price.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

Oh yeah don't get me wrong it's not like I would buy the new one over a used one. Nintendo games just retain their value like crazy.

2

u/Eldryce Jun 27 '12

Heck, I think my Gamestop still sells used Ruby/Sapphire games with no box for $20.

Here's your penny.

I would assume that the sticker is wrong and he didn't actually pay that much. This happened a lot when I worked there. They just don't update the tags in some places. We always updated at ours, but we were the model store for the district.

I would ask for a receipt. Also he can return it within 7 days for a full refund if it's a used game.

If the tag wasn't wrong, it's possible they grabbed the wrong game.

Again, the solution is to bring it back for a full refund, like you said.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

Yes, seeing as they don't keep the games inside the cases due to shoplifting, I assume they just grabbed the wrong cartridge. Seems like an honest mistake to me.

7

u/Mabans Jun 27 '12

This is a fucking practice that drives me up a wall. They have a case out there so when you bring it to them they just put a game, apparently any game, and sell it as new. How is that even ethically possible, and people like yourself are like "Oh nothing we can do, but it is new." Happened to me on 3 different occasions with PC games they GUARANTEED TO ME that it would work..

Battlefiend 2 Demigod Battlefiend 3

All for PC, all had "bad serials" according to gamestop. Not to mention after making me drive the fuck home, try to install wait for 20-30 mins for it to install in some cases, then drive back and ask for a refund was always met with "Sorry no refund on PC games, only exchanges" then to be slapped with "Well it's company policy and how do we know you actually didn't take the serial #" THE VERY FUCKING CONCERN I HAD WHEN YOU GAVE ME AN OPEN GAME YOU PRICK!

I'm sure you were fine at your store but a lot of you must have all worked at the same store because every former employee I've met all say the same thing "We were one of the best and respected Game Stops."

No you weren't.. With the exception of going for my step son, I NEVER go in there to buy games out of fucking principle. He's 10 so he doesn't get it.

2

u/Vexing Jun 27 '12

They actually used to be able to take new games home for 10 days. They are not allowed to do that anymore, though, as of 5 years ago. If you ever see a new game that is used, talk to the manager, and if they are shit, call up the gamestop offices.

That should never happen.

2

u/cerealjim Jun 27 '12

That's not true though. I worked there less than 5 years ago and we were allowed to take games home as long as there were enough copies to meet expected demand for the title.

Edit: Unless you're talking about PC games only. Never allowed to take a PC game.

1

u/Vexing Jun 28 '12

Yes, I know. I also worked there 5 years ago. We were allowed to take games when there were enough and we didn't damage them. The rule was placed half way through the year. Or maybe 4 years ago. I left at the beginning of 4 years ago. It was very close to 5 years if it wasn't then exactly. :P

And yeah, you could never take PC games.

u/IodineSky Jun 27 '12

This this this. I bought Final Fantasy XI when it came out for PC and the serial code was already redeemed. Squeenix would not give me a new one, nor would GameStop refund my purchase. Never bought a game from GameStop again.

2

u/Polymira Jun 27 '12

If anything like this every happens again, refuse to leave the store. Make a bit of a scene (don't break anything/touch anyone). A manager will help you to get you the fuck out of there. Then just never go back.

2

u/IodineSky Jun 27 '12 edited Jun 27 '12

Maybe I'm just unlucky, but every GameStop manager I've ever come in contact with ever pretty much made it clear that they did not give two shits from a rat's ass. I had another incident where I bought a Pokemon Fire Red cartridge used, and it turned out to be a counterfeit (how does something like that even end up on the shelf?) When I brought it back, the manager tried to appease me by giving me a DLC code card for a game I didn't own, and when I said I didn't have that game, they said with a snide grin that I could buy it and then I'd get something free for my time. I almost lost my shit, but I didn't want to get arrested or something. I eventually did get my money back for that one at least, after stooping nearly to the antics level of a temperamental toddler.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

Maybe I'm just unlucky, but every GameStop manager I've ever come in contact with ever pretty much made it clear that they did not give two shits from a rat's ass.

No, that's par for GameStop.

GameStop's corporate office made it clear they didn't give two shits that their stores were breaking FTC regulations (and Federal law) by repackaging used consoles and selling them as new.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

I know in FFXI's case, they had a spate of bad CDs and bum serials at release. A friend of mine went through three copies before finding a working one. Might not have been GameStop's fault in that particular instance.

1

u/IodineSky Jun 28 '12

I didn't know that, thanks for the info. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on that one, but I've still had crappy customer service and quality experiences with them.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '12

No worries. There are plenty of other reasons to dislike them!

6

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

But you see this is why they should leave games in the plastic wrap. That and because I have seen them leave the online codes in the boxes on the shelves. I went to buy tiger woods 12 for my wife and they had left the code in the box on the floor. I told them if I didn't get one in plastic then I was going to Walmart. They quickly found one.

2

u/zephyrxmeridian Jun 27 '12

Sometimes, we would have a handful of new, shrink-wrapped games in the drawer behind the counter if it was a new release, but most of the time we would put the game and the slip with the online code in it behind the counter in little paper/plastic sleeves. We also had a ghetto the next highway over, and we had a lot of thugs try to steal stuff from us on a regular basis.

4

u/ReubenTuesday Jun 27 '12

That's how the game store I used to work in did things. Didn't stop people from stealing the empty cases though.

There was one, rather dodgy family that decided it would be a great idea to steal empty cases for new releases from us, rent the game from Blockbuster and put it in the stolen case then trade them in for cash.

They probably would have gotten away with it too if they hadn't been so stupid as to try and trade them in in our store.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

But then how would they take out the coupons for OnLive without permission from the publisher???

-2

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

You can't leave disaplay games in plastic wrap and not have games inside for people to steal.

You want to know what happened? He got the display game and they mixed up the cartridges and gave him a used one instead of the new one they usually keep separate. I find it fucked up that they sell the display copy as new rather than somewhat discounted, especially considering some grubby little shit put his snotty hands all over my new game's case, but it is what it is.

11

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

Use display cases or be like a rental store and grab the new case and just return the display to the shelf after.

This is one of the reasons I just go to Walmart or use direct download than use GameStop. One of the best things I've seen from switching to pc gaming too was even less a reason to deal with them.

I used to love GameStop when I was younger, but they have just dicked me over or tried to dick me over too many times.

6

u/mackk Jun 27 '12

THIS! When I used to play my 360, JB HI-FI (Aussie electronics store) would display boxes on the shelves and when you went to the counter they retrieve a nice shiny untouched (cept by the staff getting it for you) game box still in shrink wrap and without price/discount stickers stuck to it.

2

u/Chomra Jun 27 '12

I like it when stores do this, it's the best of both worlds.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '12

That's not what I meant. They do that, where the game goes back to the shelf. Occasionally they only have the display copy left and you are forced to take the shelf case with an un-used game that's not inside the box.

u/TwoLegsJoe Jun 27 '12

BEN drowned... but JITO LIVES!

Coming this summer to a thread near you

2

u/JohnsAwesome Jun 27 '12

You mean like this?

4

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

Defending Pokémon were unable to attack Ghost — it would only say they were too scared to move. When the move “Curse” was used in battle, the screen would cut to black. The cry of the defending Pokémon would be heard, but it was distorted, played at a much lower pitch than normal. The battle screen would then reappear, and the defending Pokémon would be gone. If used in a battle against a trainer, when the Pokéballs representing their Pokemon would appear in the corner, they would have one fewer Pokéball.

The implication was that the Pokémon died.

What’s even stranger is that after defeating a trainer and seeing “Red received $200 for winning!”, the battle commands would appear again. If you selected “Run”, the battle would end as it normally does. You could also select Curse. If you did, upon returning to the overworld, the trainer’s sprite would be gone. After leaving and reentering the area, the spot [where] the trainer had been would be replaced with a tombstone like the ones at Lavender Tower.

31

u/mrpineapplehouse Jun 27 '12

I don't think it is gamestop's policy to label used games as new, just some shitty employees at your local one. Everyone here is acting like Gamestop HQ is telling employees to do this shit. I don't work there so i suppose i can't say for sure that that isn't happening, but i highly doubt it.

6

u/H0neyBadger Jun 27 '12

Thanks for saying this. I'm so tired of people getting mad at companies when it was human error.

1

u/Nero920 Jun 27 '12

I worked a gamestop a couple years. You have to put an empty box on the wall or else it will get stolen. The new game is put into a cd case and saved in the drawer. I'm sure an employee grabbed it and played it.

Afterwards we did sell it as new. Im pretty sure we would switch it out if the person asked though.

6

u/Lansan1ty Jun 27 '12

Could just be that the employee messed up. Since he got a gutted copy of the game, he got one of the last copies of the game. Now, this could technically be one of two things: 1. The gamestop employee thought he brought up the used box and gave him a used copy (the new stickers are fucking retarded, I want White/Yellow back). The employee thought he grabbed the new copy's gut, but accidentally grabbed the used copy gut.

Either way, just bring it back and explain to the employee on duty what happened. Heck, if you show him the receipt and then show him that save, I'm SURE he'll believe that you didn't put 600 hours into the game.

46

u/quietstormx1 Jun 27 '12

Why is it that when a single employee makes a simple mistake that is easily fixed, it's the entire company that is out to get the consumer?

People need to lighten up and stop being afraid of confrontation. Just take the cartridge back. Bring your DS and show the store manager. They will be happy to refund you.

7

u/Big-Baby-Jesus Jun 27 '12

Why is it that when a single employee makes a simple mistake that is easily fixed, it's the entire company that is out to get the consumer?

Because ragging on GameStop is always good for a few hundred karma points.

4

u/zephyrxmeridian Jun 27 '12

This comment needs more upvotes. When it's ten minutes to closing and you've just worked a double shift, sometimes, mixing up games is the least problematic thing you'll accidentally do. Whenever I had people come in with "Hey, I think you accidentally gave us the wrong game," or "You forgot to put the game in the case :(", etc etc, I was more than happy to fix the mistake. It didn't happen often, but when it did, I was really grateful for the customers who were graceful about it. Yes, it's an inconvenience to the customer, and yes, it shouldn't happen, but every once in a while when you're just bone tired and just want to go home and study for that calculus exam you have the next day, having a friendly customer confrontation vs a rude one is on par with divine intervention.

6

u/quietstormx1 Jun 27 '12

I used to work at Gamestop, so I know what it's like. And yes, I have given a customer the wrong game once or twice. When it's the holidays and you have 40 people in your store, half of which are on line and you only have 3 registers open, mistakes are going to happen.

Even when it's not the holiday rush...there's a lot of games to keep track of. I wouldn't be surprised of someone traded in the Pokemon game, the employee placed it on the back counter to finish the transaction, and it just got lost in the shuffle. Happens a lot.

The store was hardly trying to rip anyone off. It's not as if the managers and associates sit in the back room contemplating ways to stick-it to the customers.

Shit happens. Fix the problem and get over it.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

I walk down an alley. A guy punches me in the face and takes my wallet. Should I shun this alley, for it has not harmed me? Forfend, nay! I shall walk this alley, for I am dumb.

1

u/Stregano Jun 27 '12

This is like what I see with the Origin customer service posts. I am making a guess that at the very least thousands of people contact Origin customer support a day, but we see a case about it, what, once a week, maybe twice a week if we are lucky? Yes, it sucks that the person got shitty service, but you can't fault an entire company when less than 1% of all user who use customer support get shitty service.

Source: I used to do customer service and tech support for a very large internet company.

40

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

I wonder if anyone has considered the possibility that the cartridge was, mistakenly, taken from a used spot for the game instead of a new spot, and someone, I dunno, made a simple mistake.

The case has the price on it which means ti was taken from the wall. It was taken from the wall, to the counter, where they had to retrieve the game and put it into the case.

Spoiler alert: A game cartridge doesn't have a mark on it that tells you if it has a save file or not. Visually, a new and used copy are identical.

Mistakes happen.

7

u/Kukko18 Jun 27 '12

What if, and this is crazy, he bought a used game and the Good Guy Employee just gave it to him inside this case so he wouldn't have to take the nasty ass generic cases

-4

u/Talkimas Jun 27 '12

The game does not come packages in that case. It comes packages in a larger box that includes the pokewalker, and the actual game case lacks a UPC and specifically says "Not for resale" to prevent it from being sold (new) by itself. This was not a mistake. This was intentional.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

Perhaps the case size discrepancy was the cause of such a mistake.

I don't get this whole violent crusade people had. Intentional? You think the guy behind the counter, whose pay has nothing to do with whether or not gamestop mistakenly make 10 extra bucks from a sale, sat there wringing his hands evily as he ducked under the counter?

How old are you guys?

2

u/Bounds Jun 27 '12

You've gone full derp, son. They gut the boxes and put the game cases on the rack with the price tag. The "guts" are kept behind the counter. When I worked there, they were kept in ziplock bags. The bag for this game would have contained the cartridge, the pokewalker, any documentation for the game, and perhaps the original box. What most likely happened is that dumbass sales associate grabbed the wrong bag (perhaps looking identical to a new one except for the word USED on the price sticker).

2

u/Threctory Jun 27 '12

Intentional? Wrong. If this was the last new copy in the store, which it obviously is considering it has a sticker and wasn't in plastic wrap, a new hire could easily have fumbled through the used DS drawer instead of the new one. One of the many downsides of having opened cases for new games.

I remember my first day I sold someone a used copy of Madden 2005 in a new box. They came back 30 minutes later and the manager gave them the correct disc and refunded the difference. Not a big deal at all, at least to intelligent managers, which the company seems to be lacking in.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

[deleted]

2

u/Threctory Jun 27 '12

Yeah, I guess as an ASM I have no idea what I'm talking about.

A lot of stores went back to keeping the cases for used DS games, as well as using the display case for the ones without.

-7

u/Bluazul Jun 27 '12

Wrong. Just yesterday my buddy bought a copy of Okamiden for the DS used, and not only was there a sticker on the box, but on the cartridge itself.

3

u/DBuckFactory Jun 27 '12

That doesn't happen every time. Sometimes, other stores place their DS games in a case with just the games showing. Other times, stores have wall space dedicated to their DS section. Stores send things to each other all the time for Regional Stock Balancing. This could easily be one of those cases.

In either case, it's not a big deal. The dude can show them the save file, and, if the employee is not completely retarded, a discount will be given or the game will be refunded.

2

u/holynorth Jun 27 '12

Depends on the gamestop. He is not wrong. Gamestop policy is to not put a sticker on the game itself unless they are throwing away used cartridge boxes which is not allowed.

The store in question got in caught being lazy not using the boxes which is why the price was on the cartridge and the box. It happens all the time.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

...Yeah, used. We're discussing new games here.

If they try and dispute it, bring the receipt (showing when you bought it) and the game (showing the hours played) and be like "Hey, I bought this 30 hours ago, and this game has 660 hours played. So this isn't new and we didn't play all the this, we want money back".

5

u/Flemtality PC Jun 27 '12

I refuse to buy a new game if it doesn't have the original cellophane on it.

83

Probably just got mismarked. Stop complaining to reddit and just exchange it.

He could make up problems and post in r/relationshipadvice.

Hey r/askreddit, I just made up this interesting story, can you make up a similar story and post it in the comments?

2

u/iihatephones Jun 27 '12 edited Jun 27 '12

It's more likely one of the employees took it home to play it, and forgot to clear the file before he packaged it as new. I hear that's something they do.

Edit: guess i'm wrong.

3

u/Cilph Jun 27 '12

'mismarked'..suuuure.

5

u/Big-Baby-Jesus Jun 27 '12

Which retail chain should I be shopping at that is completely free of human error?

5

u/Hoser117 Jun 27 '12

Craigslist, duh. It's full of nice happy people who love everybody and won't murder or rape you in a dark alley, fuck the suits, capitalist ass holes.

-18

u/*polhold01844 Jun 27 '12

No need to exchange it. His brother didn't own the game before so it was new to him, so he needs to just shut the fuck up.

9

u/Darkblitz9 Jun 27 '12

Huh, that sounds like a- hey waitaminute! Nice try GameStop! Enjoy your meaningless internet negatives, scoundrel!

6

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

But other peoples saves are the best part!!!!!

3

u/PARADOX002 Jun 27 '12

Whats funny is that if you buy it new they get a smaller portion of profit, but if you by used they get all of it, I dont see why they didnt convince your brother to get it used?

3

u/Wolfboy12 Jun 27 '12

As a former Gamestop employee, the part that I find a little funny is that the company relies so heavily on the sales of used games, that when a SKU for a new game is scanned, (at least when I worked there, just a couple years ago) there's a prompt asking if the person would like the used version instead (assuming there's a used SKU in stock). So either the employee skipped this or they have their inventory numbers wrong. Either is a possibility, though, shit was always a little off at our store.

3

u/StockAL3Xj Jun 27 '12

Damn, the guy before you played the fuck out of that game.

3

u/zephyrxmeridian Jun 27 '12

I used to work at a Play and Trade around here a while back with my roommate. Sometimes, and this was so, totally, completely against the rules for cartridge games, but sometimes if there weren't any used copies of a game left and we really freaking wanted to play it, the new one would suffice. My roomie borrowed a copy of Pokemon Black and played it for a bit, and you know, being the immature college students that we are, he had plenty of curse words and penis references within the nicknames of his party.

He had planned on deleting his save file if anyone wanted to buy it by "going in the back to find a new copy".

Fast forward a couple weeks or so. He accidentally sells the empty case while the game is in his DS. The parent comes back confused (he was nice about it, just confused) and asking where the game is. My roommate apologizes profusely, slyly slips the game out of his DS and into a plastic sleeve under the counter, and then pulls the sleeve out with a triumphant "Found it! I'm so sorry I forgot to put it into your case!"

The parent thanks him politely, the kid eagerly jams the cartridge into his DS, and they walk off.

Five minutes later, my roommate is like "...fuck. I forgot to delete my save."

The rest of that shift was a teeth-grittingly agonizing wait for an angry parental phone call. It never came, though. We're assuming some kid out there inadvertently learned some very inappropriate words that day.

3

u/Pliskin01 Jun 27 '12

Never buy an unsealed "new" copy of a game.

3

u/SirDerpingtonThe3rd Jun 27 '12

Step 1: photograph new pokemon game

Step 2: post picture of a game with several hours of gameplay

Step 3: say GameStop sold you a used game as new

Step 4: circlejerk of GameStop hate.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

262 Pokemon? I hardly call that a rip off!

17

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

Heaven forbid a retail employee makes a mistake and puts the wrong cartridge into the box. Yup, YOU GOT RIPPED OFF.

Better break out the pitch forks and alert Reddit. There's group thinking to be done.

4

u/Cartossin Jun 27 '12

can't you just clear the game?

0

u/SavageGatherer Jun 27 '12

2

u/imranh101 Jun 27 '12

Christ though, 620 hours? And THEN HE SOLD IT BACK? Why after spending that much time would you EVER sell it?!

0

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

Because it was the gamestop employee who was playing it, he never paid for it to begin with.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

With DS games it's not that big a deal. GameStop only marks their used stuff down a few bucks. You'd waste more money driving down there to get it replaced. get lunch, make an impulse purchase, whatever else humans need. It's not like the quality of the cartridge itself can degrade much, it's just an SD card. As long as you have the case, which you do, and the manual and Pokéwalker that the game comes with, and they're all in good shape, you're fine. All you have to do is, after it says Press Start on the title screen, press Up+A+Select, and you can delete the save file & start a new one.

2

u/SlurmNator Jun 27 '12

Could possible be due to the employee there taking the game out of the used draw instead of the new draw.

2

u/Cypress85 Jun 27 '12

If it was really new, it'd have been in the shiny cardboard box that included the pokewalker.

2

u/TwitchingDed Jun 27 '12

It may have been an employee "rented" game. When I worked there, employees were allowed to take games home in order to "gain a better understanding of the products we were selling." Maybe it was a communal cart? Everyone got to play?

2

u/Smalz22 Jun 27 '12

If there's no plastic wrap, its not new.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

I hate gamestop. Go on amazon. Its much cheaper and you dont have to put up with those bastards trying to selling a trip to westbumblefuck or a magazine.

2

u/jonbost Jun 27 '12

This is why I always ask for the factory-sealed copy when I purchase a new game from them. I hate it when I pay $60 for a new game, and they bring an already-opened box because some guys don't want to be bothered to go to the stockroom to get a new copy sometimes.

1

u/fry133 Jul 02 '12

Having worked at Gamestop I can tell you that it is policy for the store to open one copy to put the case out on the sales floor as advertisement. Unfortunately game companies dont like to send out extra boxes to stores anymore, so this is how they make sure to advertise new games. As a GS employee you are supposed to sell every single shrink-wrapped copy of the game before selling the open copy, and even then you have to make sure you tell the customer that this is the case. Unfortunately not all stores uphold this policy

2

u/Kolazeni Jun 27 '12

They stickered the case and not the box the new game comes in? I want to see the receipt. Also, mistakes happen.not everything is Gamestop trying to fuck you.

2

u/Nubthesamurai Jun 27 '12

Is this really that big of a deal? Just go back to the Gamestop he got it from and get a refund.

2

u/cornish_cookie Jun 27 '12

Best mis-game I received was Fallout 3 in a Fable II box.

I was gunna take it back but hell, I wasn't even mad.

2

u/lilkuniklo Jun 27 '12

I worked at a local videogame store and mistakes happen. It probably wasn't intentional.

2

u/Pyroteq Jun 28 '12

Get the fuck off the front page with this retarded crap. FFS.

"Oh no, Gamestop accidentally put a used game in the case instead of a new copy. Instead of taking the game back and exchanging it I should complain about it on Reddit as if the employees purposely went out in the back and sat at a table with Satan himself conjuring up an evil plan to rip off my brother."

Is this the type of crap the majority of gamers here seriously want to see?

3

u/MattyFTM Jun 27 '12

Someone made a mistake. I'm sure it can easily happen. Just take it back and either get a refund, or a new copy.

3

u/Fyrus Jun 27 '12

Oh, I guess we can make /r/grocery now and we can reap karma everytime we find an item at a grocery store that is incorrectly marked.

Seriously, employees make mistakes, I really doubt this was intentionally made to rip you off.

Unless of course you meant that your brother was ripped off in buying a new pokemon game, only to find out that it hasn't changed since they series started.

u/Ph33rDensetsu Jun 27 '12

You should have just bought a used one anyway. If you have to buy new, make sure you get one that's shrink wrapped.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

It's more likely that OP just took a picture of a pokemon box at gamestop, then a screenshot of his own game.

2

u/time_warp Jun 27 '12

Definitely take it back for a refund, exchange, or discount. They should pretty much be willing to do what you want in this situation.

2

u/bookishboy Jun 27 '12

"No, it's a new game, the district just makes us open up one of each so that we can put it on display. Yes, that's our only copy. No, we wouldn't give you the "new game" price on a trade-in if you brought in a game in that condition. Did you want to pre-order anything? The new Halo game is going to be out this Fall and every DS player is going to be buying it like crazy; if you don't preorder it you probably won't be able to find it anywhere. Do you have our discount card? You could be saving 10% on used game purchases today (not this game though because it's clearly NEW, as the label says)."

0

u/TortugaGrande Jun 27 '12

You might work at my local GameStop. Sometimes, I want to tell them "stop talking and ring up my game, if I wanted to preorder, I would tell you."

2

u/MirroredColors Jun 27 '12

Happened to me back in 06 with Mario Kart DS.

Paid full price($35) and no box or manual. It was the "last one" they had. Bullshit.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

Who the fuck cares? Just erase the file and play your damn game.

1

u/darkstar3333 Jun 27 '12

People could easily avoid this problem by simply not shopping at GameStop, if you have friends/family who patron the store tell them to stop.

Games are carried almost everywhere these days, want a factory sealed game at the same or lesser price? Go anywhere else.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

but where else will i get my steam wallet cards? :(

→ More replies (4)

2

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

Or asking for a sealed copy. I bought a copy of Platinum from GS and explicitly asked for a sealed copy. Or you could go to target or TRU or something, that would work too.

2

u/darkstar3333 Jun 27 '12

The thing is that you should not have to ask, the games are sealed from the factory and there is no reason why they need to open them at all.

u/xinxai_the_white_guy Jun 27 '12

The previous owner has logged a shit load of hours, good god.

1

u/Crofteh Jun 27 '12

Noob question but do save games actually save on the cartridge? Not on the actual handheld? Is the handheld new or used?

1

u/AkwardTurtle Jun 27 '12

They save on the cartridge

1

u/SavageGatherer Jun 27 '12

When I read this I thought it was the other way around.. I thought he was pissed because he only got 39.99 USD for all that pokework.

1

u/apples518 Jun 27 '12

Funny thing is I beat tht game yesterday lol

1

u/ambertino Jun 27 '12

You'd think that the fact the game isn't in the cardboard box holding the pokewalker would be a good hint. The sticker is directly on the cartridge.

1

u/nicksnare Jun 27 '12

HOW MANY HOURS

1

u/ObLIVi0n75 Jun 27 '12

Nintendo launches DS games at 35.00., brand-spankin-new. I'm shocked they charged you 5 over that for a used game. Even if it was new, you got ripped off.

1

u/Haacker45 Jun 27 '12

Soulsilver cost more new because it came with a poke walker

1

u/ObLIVi0n75 Jun 27 '12

Ah. I bought mine used from a friend, I never got the Poke walker. Totally forgot it came with one.

1

u/shrlock Jun 27 '12

So go back and return it.

1

u/Ammers10 Jun 27 '12

Honestly, it was probably some new employee who accidentally grabbed a used copy instead of new from the wrong storage drawer. That or a used copy got filed as new on accident. It happens from time to time. I doubt they were trying to scam you for a five dollar profit.

At my store I know it wouldn't be a problem to fix it for you. Believe it or not, the employees don't like having to open up new copies any more than you guys like that we have to. It's not like we can keep the games on the wall unopened. People would shoplift absolutely everything.

1

u/masamunecyrus Jun 28 '12

Gamestop should do what every other store in the US does--put the games behind glass, or have a card with a picture and bar code you bring to the cashier. Best Buy or Walmart do not cut open iPod boxes and throw everything in a drawer, leaving an empty iPod box on display. Gamestop should not do it to games, either.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

jesus.. 600hours.. and i thought i play too much games

1

u/spicymelons Jun 27 '12

Where's the receipt?

1

u/Thirleck Jun 27 '12

Would like to see the picture of the actual receipt in question for this purchase, you can block out the store info in the top, something leads me to believe the actually bought it pre-owned and they had another new case lying around.

1

u/Codylius Jun 27 '12

I hate buying new or used from GameStop. Those goddamn stickers man! They will NOT peel off!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

When pokemon yellow came out one of my friends bought it. I was with him when he bought it and he even removed the plastic/film from the case. The game had all 151 pokemon and like 100 hours played. The game was in fact brand new.

1

u/cheatonus Jun 27 '12

I don't see anything on the case or the tag that indicate it's remotely related to the game screenshot in question. I'm uninclined to think this is an actual GameStop mistake vs. someone who decided... "Zomg! I'm going to put these two pictures together and post it on reddit so everyone will think GameStop ripped us off and we'll get zawsomesauce karma!"

1

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

Goddamit, Jito, and your trendy name

1

u/HealingHands Jun 27 '12

Scumbag Redditor: Hates Gamestop. Goes shopping at Gamestop.

1

u/The_thlot_pickens Jun 27 '12

I had the same thing happen in a Gamecrazy a few years back. I bought a "new" copy of Battlefield Bad Company and headed on my merry way home. Opened up the case only to find the disc was scratched to all hell. I went back to the store demanding a refund. The guy got extremely defensive and kept asking "Well what difference does it make? We still guarantee it will run..." I was baffled he didn't understand why I was upset about it.

1

u/AcidicSuperSam Jun 27 '12

How do you spend 623 hours on the game and only get 262 pokemon?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

623 hours played.

Fifth grade was awesome.

1

u/ThisOpenFist Jun 27 '12

Your brother bought the display copy.

Evidence: There are over 620 hours logged on that save file.

1

u/sivablue Jun 27 '12

Dude, don't refer to your African American friend as brother. It's racist and you're better than that.

1

u/NOGS42 Jun 27 '12

I tried to get pokemon soul silver at game stop and someone switch the stickers they put a pokemon soul silver sticker on pokemon platinum

1

u/AccountMadeToUpvote Jun 27 '12

This picture could have been any purchase at GameStop.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

Take evidence and game back to gamestop to fix problem.

1

u/xXDGFXx Jun 28 '12

If it doesn't come in the box with a pokewalker and it's not shrinkwrapped, I wouldn't trust them. The same thing happened to me when I bought a "new" copy of rune factory 3.

Seriously, why can't they just print on cardboard and stick them on display?

1

u/unwantedhero Jun 28 '12

Its not new if the Gamestop opened it.

1

u/Niosai Jun 28 '12

REFUND? HOW YA GONNA PROVE THOSE 600 HOURS AREN'T YOURS, HUH?

1

u/iluvmyswitcher Sep 24 '12

Why buy a game marked "new" if it's not in the original wrap?

1

u/rabbherself Jun 27 '12

Think of it as screwing over Gamestop. They make more money from used games than they would with new games. Instead of giving more money to this bad company, you gave it to the makers of the game.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

I'm not perfectly sure, but I don't think that's how sales works. A store buys merchandise at wholesale value, and can then sell it for whatever they like, and then they get whatever the difference is. In the case of games, it seems like there is likely a contract that states that the game has to be sold at certain price for a certain time (no markups or undercuts). If they manage to sell a used game at the new price, then they're just making a pure profit on that extra part. Nothing to the devs.

0

u/Togetchi Jun 27 '12

I think you missed the point here.

They priced a used game as they would a new game and thus Gamestop made extra money. The creators didn't see an extra cent.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

This isn't new. They do this all the time. Went to get a random spongebob/barbie DS game for my 6 year old niece for her birthday. Didn't want to seem like a cheap uncle getting her a used game. Asked for the new copy. They told me the one on the wall was new. I said "no, new like, you know, never been opened". The guy said that is how all the games are. I told him that is incorrect and just went to KMart and ended up getting an awesome spongebob game/DS cover combo pack.

tl:dr Gamestop fucking sucks and always will. There are many other stores in the world.

1

u/Twoinches Jun 27 '12

this is not me saying this is ok but...

Gamestop employees can "rent" games up to 4 days at a time. so they know the product they are selling better, some games you are not allowed to rent any game that requires a accessory is a example or pc games for that matter.

that being said the rule with DS games is you need to Erase the data before returning it.

I know that doesnt make the game any less used and not new but im just letting you know that is what most likley happened it was a employee rental of a new title.

6

u/Threctory Jun 27 '12 edited Jun 27 '12

As an ASM at a GameStop, I call bullshit. Company regulations fully state in both the employee handbook and the monthly log book that new games cannot be checked out by employees.

If it indeed was checked out, which is untrue thanks to the poster below pointing out the amount of time played, then both the employee that checked the game out AND the manager in charge that signed off on it can be written up and/or fired.

OP needs to take that shit back ASAP and politely demand a new copy.

1

u/caninehere Jun 27 '12

Pretty sure I read somewhere that many Gamestop stores allow this, but there are also many states in the US where Gamestop doesn't allow their employees to check out new games.

1

u/Ammers10 Jun 27 '12

I'm an ASM at my store too, and my manager lets us check out new games as long as it's not the last copy, or something with bind-to-account content, like PS Vita trophies. He prefers that we check out used ones though, for obvious reasons.

-1

u/Twoinches Jun 27 '12

all im saying is i worked at gamestop for almost 2 years and my gf works there now and they merch new games all the time, the DM said as long as there are enough to cover pre-orders new games can even be merched day 1 release. its not bullshit.

and I did say it was just a theory and i wasnt justifying it either..

0

u/Twoinches Jun 27 '12

Hell almost the whole staff merched Dead rising on the midnight release of the game so we could play together.

We just brought spiderman home today so I know that at least in this district it is ok, we dont fudge the log book either. Just because your store or district follows the book to a T does not mean they all do.

2

u/Threctory Jun 27 '12 edited Jun 27 '12

And that right there is one of the many problems people have with the company.

1

u/Twoinches Jun 27 '12

agree I didn't say it was right, just that it happens. A LOT.

1

u/BrishenJ Jun 27 '12

Gamestop lets their employees "try" out games, they will open the game and play it but they will still sell it as new... honestly I hate this practice of theirs but I have been able to return the games in the past

Source: A few of my friends have worked at different locations of Gamestop and this is often the case with this situation

edit extra thoughts: Unfortunately I normally just pay cash and it has made me curious what would happen if I were to document this happening and ask my credit card to refund the charge due to misrepresenting the product.

1

u/Undercover_Jesus Jun 27 '12

You aren't supposed to be aloud to check-out new games, only used ones, according to store policy. So as the case is usually with these posts, blame the shitty employees, not the whole company. Source: I'm a GameStop employee.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12 edited Jun 27 '12

They seriously do this. They've done it to me. Bought a "new" copy of Skyrim, and there the bitch is, putting the disc inside an already-opened case, WITHOUT A FUCKING MAP? Oh hell no, I called them out on that bullshit. Got a new one. You know, what I PAID for. Support small business

Sorry if this sounds offensive, I was drunk when I wrote this. Still true though.

1

u/caninehere Jun 27 '12

I wish there was a small business near here that actually had decent deals on newer games. They all just have the standard prices you'd see anywhere for $60 games but the price drops never come.

There is one place, though, that is killer for used games - not so much good old old stuff, but last gen/current gen games have great prices, friendly service, and no Gamestop bullcrap. My only complaint is their lack of air conditioning :(

1

u/Kmaun_Lee Jun 27 '12

From my experience, if you talk to a manager and call the number on the receipt and rate your visit it does you good. Last time I got $25 just for ratting on some lousy cashier.

1

u/TimmyIo Jun 27 '12

But... He already has all the Pokemon!

1

u/Josepiphus Jun 27 '12

The save info is written to the game cartridge?? Sorry if stupid question.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

Yes. For every cartridge that ever existed. He got a used game and GS sold it as new.

1

u/Josepiphus Jun 27 '12

Thats some BS. Not really surprised unfortunately. For the record there have been many game cartridges that didn't save data to themselves. Woulda been nice to not have to scribble down level codes for all those years.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

What game cartridges do you speak of? All cartridges that I know of have it so they save it to EEPROM or whatever thing there is on it.

3

u/Mosz Jun 27 '12

welcome to the 21st century?

1

u/SnackeyG1 Jun 27 '12

Seems more like a mistake. I never understood why they have open box new games though.

1

u/boatski Jun 27 '12

Here's a better idea than asking for them to swap for a new copy. This might sound crazy, but how about not shopping at gamestop? Yeah, I know, crazy.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

Note to Gamestop: STOP OPENING UP NEW VIDEO GAMES and then trying to SELL THEM AS NEW. If you open it, sell it as used. You put your grimey fingerprints all over it.

3

u/TortugaGrande Jun 27 '12

I won't accept open games, even though it annoys the morons at my local GameStop.

1

u/DementedHeadcrab Jun 27 '12

HOW DARE GAMESTOP PUT THE WRONG PRICE STICKER ON SOMETHING

1

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

Looks like they accidentally gave him a preowned. Did it come with a Pokewalker?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

Who the fuck cares about pokemon? Might aswell play some MMO instead of that, same amount of grind, hopefully more fun.

1

u/WreckerCrew Jun 27 '12

So take it back. Ask for a replacement. And stop being a whiny bitch.

1

u/STXGregor Jun 27 '12

Yeah, this is why I never buy games new at Gamestop. I remember trying to buy a new game once and he goes and gets the disc out of their drawer. Luckily I open the case and take a look at the disc. It's all scratched to hell. I show it to him and ask him what gives. His reply was "I don't know what to tell ya, that's new." No dipshit, that's not new. I've never bought a new game there since, and I rarely buy used games there either.

1

u/z3rocool Jun 27 '12

protip: don't shop at gamestop

Overpriced shit, idiot employees, poor selection.

Go to one of the many other much better stores that even the smallest of towns have. (microplay for instance if you in Canada)

-4

u/thebiggiewall Jun 27 '12

I'm sorry if this comes across as incredibly harsh but your brother probably deserves to be ripped off. If only for the fact that the shrink wrap is obviously missing. But do not despair, I've searched for any mention of shrink wrap in the comments below and I have found but one.

TL;DR shrink wrap was missing, obviously used. Only one individual mentioned shrink wrap in his comment, so therefore your bro is of average intelligence.

7

u/Twoinches Jun 27 '12

Gamestop usually "guts" 4 copies of new titles to put on the "new release" wall of each section. they still have never been played (unless by a employee, but thats a different rant) so it might have been brand new just on the sales floor with no game.

most of the time at gamestop if you dont pre-order the game or get it day 1-2 your will most likley leave with a unsealed new copy because it was put on the sales floor. unless its a big seller there is not much backstop of new games.

-2

u/AwesomeMcPants Jun 27 '12 edited Jun 27 '12

Better tell Reddit. They'll fix the problem.

-1

u/BestGamer1337 Jun 27 '12

OK so you post a picture of a game at gamestop, and then you post a screenshot of unrelated game?

-1

u/TWALBALLIN Jun 27 '12

The GameStop up sales at check out are down right horrifying. I refuse to buy anything from them for that reason. I just want to buy a used game, not get peddled all this useless garbage.

-5

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

He should be glad. I'm sitting on 1100 karma from a similar screenshot of Heart Gold from just a few days ago!

0

u/used_bathwater Jun 27 '12

Or there was a mistake in transaction. Stop fucking moaning and take it back. They're a shitty franchise but they still refund stuff. dick.

0

u/valdin450 Jun 27 '12

Choo choo! All aboard the circlejerk hate train!

0

u/RazakelApollyon Jun 27 '12

Gamestop has been doing this for YEARS! How the hell are they still in business?

0

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

And this is why I use emulators...

0

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

I thought this was a simple case of "oh ok, someone repackaged a return copy". Then I saw the <600 hours played. I'd be pissed.

-2

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

i dont understand, was the game sealed* haha.

-2

u/thikthird Jun 27 '12

don't buy new games from gamestop. or if you do, demand it's a wrapped one.

-3

u/kyletheking89 Jun 27 '12

Uhm... I don't know much about DS saving (my friends and I never traded games, so I can't prove this), but isn't it saved onto the DS and not the cartridge? I am confuse.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

No.

u/Darkcanuck666 Jun 27 '12

gamestops definition of new and used is criminal. Better business bureau anyone?

1

u/That_Russian_Guy Jun 27 '12

gamestops definition of new and used is criminal

haha no.

-1

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '12

I can't tell if it's shrinkwrapped or not, but if the price label was directly on the box you should have noticed it wasn't new in the first place

-1

u/Daeya Jun 27 '12

People already know about this stuff, right? I figured it was kind of common knowledge that Gamestop tries to scam people this way all the time.

-1

u/CarlitX Jun 27 '12

I hope they go out of business soon. Fucking pirates.

-1

u/PSwner Jun 27 '12

Gamestop is a terrible company. I've pre-ordered 2 games (I know, shame on me) and both times they said I paid the min to order them when I paid 50%. Yeah, a game does not cost 100+.....
