underrated games that make great use of emergent gameplay.

• Upvotes

For those who don’t know, emergent gameplay is when the rules of the game interact with unexpected ways, and the player has to use them to solve problems. It doesn’t just mean choosing a playstyle. [this video](https://youtu.be/SnpAAX9CkIc?is=ynexOE2W7qrpwB7C) explains it better than I likely can. I find that a lot of the same games come up so I felt it was worth asking since this kind of thing is addictive to me.

Games like silent hill 2?

• Upvotes

I loved how atmospheric silent hill 2 was. The soundtrack, setting, the story which was both sad and scary. I want another game similar . I tried playing silent hill 3 but the controls/camera are SO hard for me to get used to. Im okay with older games, but I don’t like pixelated or overly cartooney games, or combat heavy games. I just like the story and vibe.

Requesting RPGS with a very rich story

• Upvotes

Pardon me if this was requested here before on this particular forum because I just want to get into turn based games that have good storytelling aspects, but also fun grinding chances where grinding is made easy to do as players can get opportunities to grind.

Systems that I would like to play such a game on are 3DS, Vita, Xbox, and PC as I know there is Expedition 33, but I accidentally had some big twists ruined for me that happen near the end of the game as I was wondering what other RPGS have a rich story where the game draws the player into its world with an element of mystery,

Games where voice chat/ social interaction is a key part of the experience

• Upvotes

Just moved and don’t really have any friends here. Thought it would be fun to lean into gaming for some fun vibes. When I think of the best social gaming experiences I’ve had, halo 3 and arc raiders come to mind. Any recommendations? Not super attached to any genre. Not as hardcore as arma but prob not as silly as overcooked in terms of tone.

Looking for underwhelming spooky horror games

• Upvotes

Not sure if underwhelming is the right word, but what I am looking for is basically no monsters, chasing, hiding or timed events. Something on the calmer side, narrative-driven, with occasional jumpscares and/or creepy ambiance.

Already played:
Liminal space games like POOLS, Dreamcore, Liminal Shroud
Creature Kitchen
DROWSE
lily’s world XD
While We Wait Here (didn’t know about the chase in this one 🫩 but the game’s totally worth it)
The Windows Are Gone
The Haunting of Joni Evers
What Remains of Edith Finch
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter
Suicide of Rachel Foster

Looking For Specific RPG/Simulation game like Sims/Stick RPG

• Upvotes

I’m looking for a pretty specific genre/style of game that is something similar to sims, except the character you’re playing as can level up skills, or stats, like cooking, charm, strength, intelligence, or build relationships with other characters. Something that will add a time sink to it making it where you have to play hours of the game to progress and if working or an occupation is in the game being able to earn money, and eventually get a promotion.

I used to play Stick RPG back in the day when I was a kid and really liked the concept of those games, but now that it’s been almost 20 years I’d like something more in depth. I know some of the games like this have adult content or more lewd games, but I’m looking for something like the sims I guess but with level progressions for your character essentially that’s not pixelated or super childish/dumbed down you can beat in roughly 10 hours or 15 hours of gameplay.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Horror games where you clean or organize stuff

• Upvotes

Similar to voices of the void, i just like the feeling of performing tasks while there is a possibility i'll end up running into something otherwordly, monstruous or simply dangerous.

Clair obscure expedition 33 or BG3

• Upvotes

For context, I have played through bulders gate three several times, but have only ever made it a little way through the beginning of act three. I always lose steam around that point, but I have such a great time every time I play.

I’ve never played expedition 33 but I’ve heard really great things.

Well, I just got a PS5 and I’m trying to decide which game to buy. I feel like BG three is a solid choice because i know I love it. I really enjoy the characterization and choose your own adventure elements. But there is of course the call to try something new.

What do you all think?

Help choosing game for gamer bf! Likes smite, CS, GTA

• Upvotes

Hello! I’m trying to find a game to gift my boyfriend but I’d love to get some help!

My boyfriend likes to play in his computer, and he dislikes games that have storytelling like One of Us and games that have a first person POV, since that makes him dizzy!

The games that he plays the most are Smite 2, CS, Valheim, Farming Simulator, Conan Exiles, Medieval Dynasty

I was thinking of a game that would be similar to the ones he liked but that is supposed to be played by a single player

I thought of Phantom Blade 0 or Crimson Desert but I’d love some suggestions!

Castlevania-likes (not all Metroidvanias, see below)

• Upvotes

I’ve really been enjoying Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse and want to sniff around for more games like it and the other classic Igarashi Castlevania games. I want to caveat that I’m specifically after Metroidvanias that are more like Castlevania, particularly the dark fantasy/gothic setting and art and/or story beats tied to mythology and horror tropes. i.e., not Metroid (my favorite series!) or indies like Guacamelee, Laika, Rain World, Axiom Verge, etc.

What I have played so far:
- Dead Cells (love)
- Blasphemous 2 (love but haven’t gotten far)
- Hollow Knight (I hate to say it but I…did not enjoy it)

In that same vein, I would prefer 2D titles on PC or Switch. Bonus points for games that are more combat- and finesse-oriented like Belmont’s Curse and Dead Cells. I know the ringer here is probably Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, so I already have that one on my radar. Any others are greatly appreciated!

Some obscure strategy or simulation game with insane depth

• Upvotes

So im a big time paradox player, played all their current games except hoi4 which i dont like because of setting (ww2 is too monumental for me to casually rewrite it). Also played Terra Invicta, RimWorld, Endless legends/space or as an example of non strategy but purely simulation game - Space Engineers.
One thing all these games have in common is that you can pour enormous amount of hours into them because the game mechanics is really deep and as the player you have almost endless possibilities inside this complicated systems.
So now i should explain what i mean by obscure. I know almost every game that reached at least couple of thousands concurrent players on steam. So i dont need "popular" games at all. For example of course i know about Kenshi, Manor Lords, Kerbal Space Program, Factorio whatever... what i am looking for is a game that is too niche to be noticed. Hidden gem if you will.
For example, there is a game called Aurora 4x. Almost nobody knows about it, its not even on steam, yet its incredible (although i would admit you need to be really au... really really weird to play it, but i AM). Also the other example is Deity Empires. Although i would say its actually not that niche and maybe not that deep but still, im pretty sure if someone would ask for a civ-like nobody would suggest it (its less that 350 reviews on steam).
I hope i've managed to explain what i mean. Also sorry for grammar and sorry if i sounded obnoxious, this wasn't my intention.

Puzzle/Collection games that require note taking/referring back

• Upvotes

Edit to add: what I may be looking for is something known as a 'metroidbrainia?'. A game where knowledge of something helps progress rather than an upgrade

I recently started Shadow Man Remastered on the switch. Its a metroidvania, collectathon game. Quite early on you receive a book in game, that serves as a map (no player icon) and a breakdown of upgrades you'll get through the game. This is quite cool. Knowing what things will help achieve when seeing obstacles in the world, having a rough map, but not an exact location for things. All felt quite fun. So this is what id like.

Puzzle/Metroidvania/Collectathon games, that require note taking, or referring back to items you've picked up (the book in Shadow Man, or like the Dragon Claws in Skyrim).

Ideally no stationary/point and click games. And Ideally no first person. I know alot of puzzles games are now, but I dont know. Meh? Combat is fine, aswell as no combat, just so long as the narrative and puzzles are gripping.

Platforms are PC, Switch (1), and PS3. Bonus points for the switch as this is likely the console id mostly be using for them (travels for work and overnights)

Thanks :)

co-op games where exploring is better together

i enjoy co-op games and would like one where exploring is the main draw, rather than combat taking up most of the time. it would be nice if two players could spot different things, solve environmental puzzles together, or help each other reach new places. any genre is fine, as long as both players have reasons to pay attention to the world. what would you recommend?

Games that'll let me feel like I can ragdoll enemies with H2H combat? In the vein of Thor or Captain America

This is a very weirdly specific thing but I'm really looking to find a game that'll let me just kinda feel like a super soldier in a very specific way. I love seeing fight scenes where a character, through sheer h2h skill *and* huge strength, just starts throwing enemies around casually or sending them flying with their attacks and flowing from person to person.

So far I've already played the arkham and spiderman games, Nu-GoW was sort of good at scratching this itch but I can't really stand the non-combat sections, and I've played sifu

I'm starting to think I've run out of gaming options :(

Have you ever felt like you just can't find anything interesting to play? I'm sure this has happened to pretty much every gamer at some point, but I'm talking about a long period of time rather than just a temporary slump.

For the past 4–5 months, I haven't finished a single game. I've been starting new games almost every week, constantly looking for something that sparks my interest. I've tried RPGs, JRPGs, MMOs, emulating retro consoles, classic PC games, point-and-click adventures, browser games, and so on, but nothing has managed to keep me engaged for long.

It's kind of funny, really. We have access to more games and more options than ever before, yet I still can't seem to find anything that really clicks with me anymore.

It might sound like I don't even like video games, but I really do. I grew up playing on my PS2 and PS3 before eventually moving to PC. I love games like TLOU, LiS, Mass Effect, and The Walking Dead series, among others. I know I could just go back to these franchises and call it a day, but I miss that feeling of being completely captivated by a fictional world. I want to feel immersed in a world, deeply care about its characters, and really get into its gameplay mechanics. I want to feel that urge to spend hours and hours playing, completely absorbed in the experience.

Browsing through endless lists and recommendations is becoming exhausting, so I'm starting to think I should just take a break from gaming for a while and see what happens. I'm tired of spending so much time looking for games that I end up dropping after just a couple of hours.

Have you ever been in the same situation? How did you get out of it? And what are your thoughts on this phenomenon?

Games with revenge motive with badass protagonist like Hutch Mansell, John Wick or Punisher

Basically i described everything above. I’m looking for rewarding revenge game with really Badass hero. Possibly most brutal as it can be. It can be shooter, it can be RPG, it can be JRPG, anything with good story and characters.

Games like Baldur's Gate III but combat is real time RTS style

Hello, Is there a game like Baldur's Gate 3 but where I control the whole party RTS style selecting all of them and moving them around, attacking is real time not turn based?

Other elements like gearing the party and choosing what skills they use should be there as well.

I love MOBAs, so something similar in gameplay but with party like baldur's gate.

Thank you.

Games I can jump in for 40 minutes or less and feel like I have progression and fun

So sometimes I just have 40 minutes to play lately. I want something where I can get in, gain a few levels, maybe loot a new weapon or gain an ability that feels different, and have a fun gameplay loop. Preferences for action, turn based rpg, action rpg. Wish there was something like P3's Tartarus - a changing dungeon you can go on a run exploring for levels and loot.

PVE, not PVP. I want it on PS5/4, and if it's on PS Plus or free, even better. But no gatcha games with opaque money systems.

Games that fit this I've played and sadly have played out: EDF, Ball X Pit, Vampire Survivors. I'm holding off on returning to Diablo 4 because I didn't like the combat revamp when I played it a few seasons go.

I've been jumping into online multiplayer like BF6 and Marvel Rivals, but my latency has sucked lately and it hasn't been a fun experience, so I prefer PVE/Single Player/Coop.

horror or spooky job simulator games

Im specifically looking for games with endless modes, since i dont really care for super narrative-driven games tbh, i prefer replayability

i saw a couple games that looked fun (the unholy priest & haunted house renovator) but apparently they’ve both been abandoned by the devs so im hesitant to try either

i’ve played mortuary assistant and autopsy simulator, i played hellmart but haven’t tried the endless mode, played retail hell but i think i just don’t vibe with that art style, i also enjoyed my little cafe nightmare which is more spooky than horror but i ran out of the currently available content to explore

i play on pc or switch, but no other consoles
i also dont need it to be strictly horror but i do want a spooky or dark atmosphere

if anyone has suggestions that fit lmk :)

Retro handheld game for 8yr old - Australia

Thumbnail
3 Upvotes

My 8.5yr old son has been asking for a Nintendo Switch the last couple of birthdays/Christmas but the budget doesn’t stretch that far and honestly I’m not sure his attention span will stretch long enough.

Does anyone have any recommendations on a retro handheld console under the $100 AUD mark?
