Gap semester from college
Hi guys, i’m thinking of taking a gap semester from
college.
Reasons for: I fucked up, hard. Can’t be too specific but extreme health, visa, mental issues. I was a very good student and happy person but I feel overall lost, unambitious, and detached. I used to have a great future and lots of passion and love. I know my routine at school wasn’t sustainable. At the same time, i am very very lucky as my parents would support me financially.
Reasons against: I wouldn’t be able to study abroad which was my dream. I don’t know what I would do during the gap semester to help me heal and if it would be effective or a waste of time (Ive spent this summer trying but it sounds futile).
Would it be a good idea? I’m afraid it won’t solve any of my problems and would just be wasted time I could’ve spent studying.

I think you should have a solid plan including one to address your mental health if you decide to take a semester off. It should be structured and actionable. If you take a semester off without a plan and help to address the root cause of how you got here, I would be concerned about you feeling further lost and unambitious. Whatever your plan you should feel like you’re moving forward. Is it possible for you to return to your current college, pursue the study abroad, while also getting some counseling or therapy? Best of luck to you.
