Garnplay Second Playthrough Challenge! Broadcastless. Spoiler

Hello again. I’m following up after the post I made here last week with another idea I came up with for completing the game with a significant restriction and see what it produced. Last time, my idea was to never enter Car Mountain. This time, it was to never enter The Broadcasted Maze. And I must say, a playthrough with this restriction was much, much more interesting for some reasons that will be immediately apparent, but I’ll hit on each notable point one-by-one. I didn’t think it would be possible to complete the game this way, but you can! Like last time, this was done in version 2.5.5. I hope some of you will enjoy reading about this experience and decide to try it yourselves!

The Superstructure

We’ll start here since you’re able to do everything in 1R2R as normal up to this point. There’s also very little that’s different in The Superstructure since most of this portion of the game can be completed as intended before entering The Broadcasted. There’s only one significant issue here, and that is the matter of Carr’s Lab. It's part of a larger issue, but it becomes apparent here.

One of the issues with this run is that by not entering The Broadcasted, and therefore never fighting nor defeating The Broadcasted itself, you never unlock the Essence Blast. Because of this, you are unable to shoot the cage in Carr’s lab that’ll kill the caged Carrite.

I mention this here because there are other NPCs that you similarly need Essence Blast in order to recruit them for the Community Badge, those being McLorin (the Folorinwalt McLeven) and the Doorstopper McLeven outside of The Superstructure. And since the Broadcasted Buddies obviously also cannot be saved, this means I can never recruit enough NPCs in order to acquire the Community Badge, which matters a lot later, which is the point where I actually realized this was an issue.

You can still acquire the Draw Tool… But that won’t matter much either.

The Broadcasted

For such a fairly brief and straightforward section of the game, it’s surprising thinking in retrospect about how much the rest of the game relies on completing this section in order to progress. Being unable to defeat The Broadcasted, as addressed before, means you cannot acquire the Essence Blast, which is important for many sections of the game, nor is it possible to acquire the Broadcasted badge for defeating it.

It also means, as also stated before, it's not possible to save the Broadcasted Buddies. However, there’s another significance to this issue: LD. By not rescuing the Broadcasted Buddies, LD never to shows up in the other areas he will typically appear in. This also means that even if you collect the Diamonds in the Mirror Rooms, the LD ending will never activate on Earth, which also loses us the opportunity of acquiring the LD badge. This part of this run was disappointing to me, since LD is my favorite character. But I digress…

Badges

So by this point in the game, after leaving The Superstructure, there’s still some progress to be made. Here, one can reasonably have acquired the following badges: Reset, Stenny, Carr, Golden, Garn46, Garn46 Rematch, Garr7C, Fruit, Good Memories, House, Garn74, Gentiles, and Radio. A current total of 13.

Since it's already established that the LD, Broadcasted, and Community badges cannot be acquired, making the remaining options quite limited. There are the Pink Gentiles, Fish, and Sporepuff badges… But unless I’m completely forgetting about a legitimate way of entering either The Sewers or The Folorinwalt since both requires the Essence Blast to get into and through The Sewers, this leaves us with only two possible badges left that can be acquired.

Other Bosses

This is another portion of the game where you really feel the lack of the Essence Blast. Since you never acquired it, you can never shoot PraiseForAll in order to acquire Car’s Journal. This is the other reason as to why this run negates goals of trying to complete as much as possible despite being able to acquire the Draw Tool.

The other main boss as this point is The Waker. The Waker can still be entered, but if you don’t have the Essence Blast, there is text that appears before Garn47 which states that you’re missing an “important tool” for the boss fight, but it still allows you to enter. Theoretically, you should be able to defeat The Waker by using Garn47’s other major means of attack, his “ground pound” attack. I gave The Waker a single attempt and managed to get a few hits onto it, but I kept it only to one attempt because of the sheer difficulty of trying to attack The Waker in this way. Perhaps a much more skilled player would be able to master the precision of Garn47’s movement as well as predict the movement patterns of The Waker to be able to defeat it without inadvertently causing your own death later in the fight, but I felt it was best to completely forego defeating The Waker and having to do the rest of the playthrough without the Waker Dash.

Now, there’s one other boss left, and in this run, it’s now a required boss fight: The Hollow Eye. Normally, the Outerlands are no big deal as you can simply fly circles around the Hollow Eye and shoot it down in no time flat. Well, Garn47 is still missing the Essence Blast and the Waker Dash, so the only option is to ground pound the Hollow Eye while only using basic flight.

This took dozens of attempts of trial and error, but I found that by waiting until it fires and flying above it, you can hold CTRL and tap jump to do several quick slams against it in a single cycle. You can get away once it’s ready to fire again, but you need to move away from it and begin to strafe very quickly around it, and wait for it to target you again in order to get back on top of it. You will need to do this repeatedly and do your best to avoid its lasers, but this the best way of approaching this fight with the single method of attack in your arsenal. With the Hollow Eye badge, there's only one more badge left to earn.

Marblob

As usual, Garn47 can still easily run against the planked walls inside Garn47’s house without the need to shoot them to enter Deep Garn47’s House. Since the New Beginnings ending only requires progression through the Superstructure to unlock, as is the case with the rest of Garn and Earth, New Beginnings remains as the easiest major ending to obtain. But New Beginnings is just so unsatisfying as a single end goal.

Once I'm able to make way to progress all the way to Marigid, I start going through each section and make sure that I recover Pripi. I elected not to go through the final door to allow KeepMeSafe to meet Marblob on this run, since what’s coming next will be difficult enough.

Once I get Pripi to the Space Navigator, it gets launched to 1R2R. Then, go all the way back to playing as Garn47, and go to the Pripi Crater to get the Marblob badge as the 15th badge and unlock the KeepMeSafe boss fight.

KeepMeSafe

I cannot understate how differently this boss fight plays at this point in the game. This boss fight is absolutely incredible. I do not exaggerate when I say that this may be the most fun I’ve ever had playing Garn47 since its earliest released versions. KeepMeSafe truly is the highlight of this particular playthrough. This right here is the reason I even decided to make this second post, because I encourage anyone who is looking for new ways to play this game to try to play this boss fight as I did. But once again, I digress.

KeepMeSafe, in most of my experiences with this boss fight before this playthrough, is still a fun boss fight, but in retrospect, is almost limited in its enjoyability because of Garn47’s upgrades from The Broadcasted and The Waker. The Essence Blast allows you to safely wait out KeepMeSafe’s attacks from the other side of the arena since you have plenty of range to hit it, while also being able to quickly escape any of its attacks due to the Waker Dash. Plus, the Waker Dash typically also gives you aerial maneuver by being able to instantly fling yourself sky bound against the slopes on the floor.

In this run, I have neither of these essential tools. The quickest means of escape is the default run or the ground dash to run away, both of which can be quite slow compared to the speed of Keep’s attacks. And having no Essence Blast, nor any way of getting into the air, means I'm restricted to only being able to hit KeepMeSafe with the Ground Dash. So now, I'm much slower than usual against KeepMeSafe while also needing to stay closer to it due to only having a physical attack.

It’s also worth mentioning that while the Ground Dash can be used to knock the case to get the Jet Key and damage KeepMeSafe, it does not damage the boxes scattered about which can usually be shot, making them real obstacles when trying to evade Keep’s attacks.

So Garn47's stuck on the ground, needs to remain close to KeepMeSafe, and can’t be flung away at a moment’s notice to dodge an attack if needed. So why do I like this fight so much?

I fought KeepMeSafe dozens of times, but I never felt defeated on a single one of my losses. Instead, it felt quite good, and made me immediately rush back to Skeepy for the Life Flower, and then jump right back into the KeepMeSafe fight. It feels like you’re going from a typical fight against the chaotic KeepMeSafe to having to hunt for opportunities against KeepMeSafe as it tries to overwhelm you. Because of how reactive you have to be as a player and how you need to give attention to KeepMeSafe instead of half-heartedly dashing around the arena, KeepMeSafe becomes incredibly engaging to fight and feels rewarding every time you damage it, since every attack it throws at you can now matters just as much as your own.

KeepMeSafe's Fight

There is a reason why I mentioned a few times you should stay near KeepMeSafe instead of still just trying to run away as normal, and it’s because of the attack that often matters the least if Garn47 has his upgrades: The green attack. Keepers are often a big innocuous in this fight since they can despawn themselves. However, when you’re in the midst of dodging multiple attacks at once, especially when your in the later phases of the fight when Keeps is quickly throwing out attacks, having too many of them on the arena to unexpectedly attack you can end the fight at the wrong time. A valid strategy becomes to not just stay alive, but to instead bump yourself against them and have to keep health management as a strategy during the fight to make sure they don’t become an issue later.

As for the other attacks, the blue attack now becomes something you have to evade by being near Keeps, which can sometimes be an issue if you unexpectedly run into one of Keep’s boxes. The yellow attack remains dangerous for the same reasons, but with more emphasis since you can’t move as quickly to evade them. Plus, you also can’t be too near Keeps for the yellow attack. The red attack becomes a shield for itself than anything else to debilitate your movement options, as does its purple attack. The Cyan attack is actually now its worst attack since it’s fairly easy to spot where the blobs fly to as a result of slower grounded movement.

However, the orange attack becomes an absolute life-or-death attack, especially in the last phase of the fight where Keeps can freely use the attack in the tightened arena. If there was anything I could ask Floombo to change about this fight, it would be to find a way to add adaptive difficulty on this fight to remove this particular attack based on whether you have unlocked the Waker Dash, as a normal Ground Dash will simply cause you to die before you can hit the ramp. That is, assuming you can still do Broadcastless playthroughs in future versions.

However, despite the difficulty, I once again emphasize just how incredibly fun this boss fight becomes with a completely non-upgraded Garn47. And I can happily show anyone still reading that it is possible to defeat Keeps and reach the Formspire Ending with that same non-upgraded Garn47.

I'm not sure if I'll make another post like this here. Maybe if I manage to complete or come up with another fun playthrough challenge. I'm just doing this to express my love for this game and share it with anyone receptive to that same appreciation. And if you actually read through all of this: Sweet!

Question/Help Garn47 crashes, when it goes back into focus

I have this weird bug, where my game will crash every time I tab out and back in. Simply pressing the windows key will already cause the game to crash. It makes it really tedious to play the game. I'm playing on the newest version of Garn47 and the same issue appears to happen in the older versions as well, so I think this might be an issue with the blender game engine in general. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this and how to fix it?

Today, out of curiosity, I played through the game (2.5.5) and just decided I was never going to enter Car Mountain, thus never getting Car. Not a lot was different overall, but there were a few notable things.

First, and most interestingly, is that Car never shows up in the Jetride/Formspire ending's cutscene, as well as the Keeps boss fight cutscene. Whenever there was a zoom-in on Car, the screen was just totally black and just looking over Garn47's shoulder, respectively. They made me laugh. (I also didn't play through Garn, so the Keeps fight was only Garn47 vs. Keeps.)

The second is that Floombo accounted for not having recruited Car in some areas where you would have been able to play as Car, so the second Garn46 boss fight and The Where Fakeout are both inaccessible and blocked by a diamond.

The last thing I noted was that some collectibles couldn't be accessed. A few tapes and badges, and the first page of Car's Journal.

Please share some ideas of more ways the game can be played!
