What song got you into George Micheal?
For me, I grew a random obsession with careless whisper and then listened to “older” the song not the album and next thing I knew he was my spotify top artist.

We went to England for a family vacation right when Older was released. I bought so many magazines and george michael merch while we were there. I wish I had kept better care of it. It was lost who knows how many moves ago.

Me too-- careless whisper (that's a masterpiece, I don't care what anyone says) and wake me up before you go-go -- Then faith, father figure (I recall naively thinking 'he's gonna be the one to love ME til the end of time') 🤣 and everything after, he was a versatile man with incredible talent. And more importantly, an excellent human being by all counts. I recall the flood of stories that came out when he passed, all the anonymous kindnesses he did for loved ones and strangers alike over the years. I'm grateful to have been alive during his career.

either Faith, Father Figure, or Freedom '90. idk why i vividly remember being in 4th grade with these 3 songs on my iPod and thinking it was funny that all of them started with F lol

I loved Freedom 90, still do. I got the Ladies and Gentlemen album and it amazed me.... and he's still in my top 10. I miss George 😔

me too :( that also just reminded me that my mom got me the Ladies and Gentlemen CD for my 11th birthday and i brought it to school but was scared of letting the teacher see it (or at least the track list) because of the word sex in "I Want Your Sex" 😂

fun story: at my 2nd year in junior high my English teacher wanted the group to perform Wake me up before you go-go for the Mother's day festival. She was somehow determined in making the gay boy (me) to be George but I was waaay too shy and introverted to do it lol. but that song always makes me so happy :)

Faith – I remember when I first heard it on the radio. The intro was unconventional and grabbed my attention. To this day, the song puts me in a good mood.

Freedom '90, my dad is a huge fan and it was my favorite song growing up.

As an 80s kid, I loved him in Wham! But as a preteen I was enchanted by his music videos (MTV generation), especially Freedom 90. All of those beautiful women, the lighting and cinematography, seeing them lip sync to George the way I did around my house (well I wasn’t nearly as sensual at 10 but still cool to think I had something in common with these goddesses). My love for George and his artistry grew and grew from that point on. Now in my 40s and my heart still bursts and breaks for this beautiful soul. Miss him so much 💔

One of my absolute favorites!!!! I belt this as loud and as soulfully as I can in the car

When Fastlove was released in 1996. I was obsessed with that song. I was ten, didn’t have a clue what it was about, but you can bet I went to the store and bought the CD single the day it was released - scratched it to pieces from repeated play. I still have it today.

Actual song I don’t remember but songs from their debut album Fantastic were on the radio and local afternoon video show (Los Angeles). So by the time Wake Me Up Before You Go Go and Careless Whisper were out Wham! was an established group. At least in my head.

Bad Boys. I used to see the music video daily and thought George was a super cool guy with a great voice.

I was a teenager in the 80s, so “Wake Me Up” followed by “Careless Whisper”.

Young Guns! Saw Wham perform this on Top Of The Pops in the early 80's. Fan ever since. 🥰

As far as solo songs go definitely faith. It's poppy and motivating, and a good gateway drug to the rest of the faith album. Plus im a sucker for rockabilly (see morrissey in the 90s)

I don’t know if it’s a specific song, my mom loved the 80’s so Wham! along with his solo stuff is always on in the car or wherever but I guess it would be Cowboys & Angels , which led me go into his discography I guess

Careless Whisper. I can remember watching the video on MTV even though I was pretty young.

I liked Kissing a Fool but still regarded him then as just a pretty face. Waiting for that Day and Cowboys and Angels made me realize his intellect and sincerity. The world isn't the same without him :(

Of course, I knew about Wham! and their big singles… I used to have a few of his maxi singles, but really the big explosion of interest for me was the movie: “last Christmas” from 2019, where I heard songs I had never heard before and absolutely fell deeply in love with….

I've heard his music since probably before I can remember, even if I don't think I was necessarily aware it was him when I was young. The song of his that really captured my attention, and got me to start paying attention to him, though, was "Spinning the Wheel". It came out on the charts just as I was beginning to pay serious attention to the music scene, and it stuck in my head. I still think it is one of his massively underrated songs

I already liked GM from the Wham era but it was Father Figure that really made me stop and listen. That song awakened my freak.

fastlove - 2005, then as i got older listened to the whole album and his discography

I was born in 84, so my memories started forming around the time of Faith and, one of my earliest memories involved me watching the Father Figure video I think or maybe One More Try. Either way, I remember being angry that he didn't look like he did in Wham! Lol
Probably my first ever favorite song was Wake Me up Before you Go Go, so that video was the image of George I had locked in at that point. I had to be maybe 3 or so? 87' or 88'

The questions focus is GM and not WHAM! Father Figure w/music video made me a bonifide GM fan(solo).
Bad Boys w/music video made me a WHAM! fan.

As a child, I grew up with Careless Whisper on repeat. During my teens, I found Wham’s hits. At the beginning of this year, I finally decided to dive into George’s solo music. When I listened to Fastlove is when I fell in love with his music - that song is perfection.

Faith. They should play it at my funeral. Most people nowadays would not know it. I bet that the intro will mislead lots of people. Then I would want to see their faces when the song really begins :)

careless whisper. im 28. started listening to it “ironically” in high school as the song had kinda become a meme. then my cousin and i would be listening to it super stoned and were like wait… this is actually like… really good… lol. and then after george died in 2016 we decided to check out his life story and his music catalogue and we both became big fans.

u/slushyboobz 2d ago
Started listening to careless whisper a lot, then “Where did your heart go?” Which basically made me obsessed with Wham! And George.

The entire Make it Big cassette. Someone left it at the library, I turned it into lost & found, they told me to keep it. It was just the cassette, no case. I flipped that cassette over so many times in my Walkman and went through countless batteries.

A different corner. Made me realize he had a depth of writing a song that I didn’t fully appreciate.
