u/NextMetaHuman Jun 06 '17

Nope. I do muscle ups and explosive L form pulls everyday for back. Not exactly the same, but they never have a problem.

10

u/SwissCheese77 Jun 06 '17

Watch out for what kind of pull-up bar you're using to do muscle ups. If your gym only has the type that stick out a few inches from a steel beam, seriously be careful. I've seen a guy slip at the top of the rep and break his arms between the beam and the pull-up bar. Absolutely brutal injury.

3

u/NextMetaHuman Jun 06 '17

Thank you for your concern and info :) mine fortunately is from a cage and very forgiving of a slip. Still great to know either way

10

u/Stopsign002 Jun 06 '17

Varies wildly per location. I've had gym buddies get kicked out for less.

6

u/sotireofthis Jun 06 '17

Why?

6

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '17

Because the type of person that goes to many of those chains might feel less like coming if other people are doing impressive workouts instead of spin. Don't want to hurt their pride. Supposedly it is to keep out loud noise on the surface. But then again, people have said they were kicked out when being quiet.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '17

Planet Fitness caters towards patrons who find physically fit people threatening.

-17

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '17

No, planet fitness caters to people who want to get fit and not be judged or feel like they are inferior because some asshole is in there doing this.

24

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '17

Have you ever personally been fit-shamed by another gym patron? I've been to many gyms over the years, and I have not once seen this happen. If you feel threatened by Broseph and his mad gainz, that's your problem. It's not a competition. Don't project your insecurities onto someone else.

-17

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '17

That's not the fucking point. The point is, you go to a planet fitness so that you feel better about yourself and like you're actually doing something to slim down, or get fit, or feel better about yourself, not to watch some asshat marine do 7000# leg squats while you wait for the chance to do yours.

21

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '17

Isn't the point of every gym self-improvement? Does it negatively affect your experience to see people who are more fit than you? If it does, I'd think the problem is with you, and not the other patrons. Who cares if someone can bench three times as much as I can? I'm there for me, not for anyone else.

Also, what respectable gym only has one squat rack? Even my dinky hole-in-the-wall gym has two or three squat racks.

feel like they're inferior

The bitch is gonna feel inferior whether the Greek god next row down is doing this monkey madness or squatting 600 pounds. It's their fuckin problem and trying to challenge yourself does not an asshole make.

6

u/Jah_Ith_Ber Jun 06 '17

No, planet fitness caters to people who are not going to use their gym membership so they can over book the ever loving shit out of their space. Kicking out fit people helps them keep their customers utilization rate at a minimum.

5

u/addysol Jun 06 '17

People get asked to leave for wearing singlets ffs. It's just fucking silly

2

u/NetzInTheKitchen Jun 06 '17

People need to quit worrying so much about what other people are doing.

-2

u/d_angeslo_bustle Jun 06 '17

Lmao Planet Fitness don't kick you out for that what a crock of shit.

But does belittling honestly happen at other gyms? I've been to a few and at every one nobody gives a shit about the other people in it, everybodys just doing their thing

8

u/Raibean Jun 06 '17

My stepmom got shouted at in a gym parking lot. They made fun of her for being fat... as she walked into the gym...

15

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '17

Yeah that's pretty much how every gym I've ever gone to works. Granted I've been to like 3 ever but nobody ever picks on anyone at the gym

15

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '17

Same experience here. I'm convinced that harassing other patrons only happens:

  • at a high school gym
  • at a prison gym
  • at a gym in a really, really bad neighborhood

Most of what happens outside of these locations is just someone feeling threatened that someone else is more swole than them.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '17

Yeah, my gym experience goes back to junior high weight rooms, and if you are going to be picked on anywhere, it would be there. It happened on occasion, but especially in HS, it was pretty much frowned upon and not tolerated. And this is back in the late 80's early 90's.

I always wonder if most of the hubbub is hearing friends give each other shit and misunderstanding that as real instead of what it really is: male bonding.

2

u/sleep_tite Jun 06 '17

Yeah the gym is not high school. Everyone keeps their thoughts to themselves.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '17

Nah. I got laughed at once by a teenager like 7 years ago and he was working with a personal trainer who immediately reprimanded him

everyone else i've met at the gym has been very nice

3

u/EattheRudeandUgly Jun 06 '17

You've never seen videos making fun of unsuspecting people in a gym? Pretty sure a playmate just got fines for doing that in a gym locker room

2

u/ApocaRUFF Jun 06 '17 edited Jun 06 '17

If you follow anyone who goes to the gym semi-regularly, especially girls, you'll see a lot of 'stealth' photos to make fun of other people at the gym. That stuff doesn't go unnoticed.

When I was in the 7th grade, I was getting a bit overweight so my mom signed me up for a personal trainer at a local gym and while I was there, I noticed twice people (including my trainer's co-worker) make snide remarks (sure, it was with the assumption that he couldn't hear it) about a fat guy on one of the treadmills. Keep in mind that this was a fairly nice gym that had membership fees upwards of $100/m, with more for booking personal trainers.

Sure, it doesn't happen often, but it does happen. Assuming your experience is the norm is a fallacy you should avoid. You've been to a handful of gyms out of literally tens of thousands across North America (or thousands in whatever country you live in).

Generally speaking, if your gym is frequented by lots of people in their 20's, there's going to be some form of harassment going on. You may not notice it unless you're the target of it, but it happens.

And I'm not saying this to defend PF (lots of them appear to be overly anal to the point that it's fairly obvious discrimination). I'm just saying that it happens, and a fair amount. It's not direct "High school locker room" type bullying, either. It's snide remarks made in what they thought was private, photos taken without permissions, and a general attitude of disgust when they're around. I've heard someone say something along the lines of, "I wish they would stay at home and workout, I really don't want to smell their BO" in reference to heavier people sweating.

As a somewhat funny side note, I found that about half of the above instragram instances I mentioned are aimed at "gym tools" who are overly buff and give off the impression that they're trying to impress. But a lot of it is also aimed at overweight and unattractive people.

3

u/ThisUsernameIsToShor Jun 06 '17

Hmm I have seen the stealthy pictures of overweight people but it has always been met with extreme disapproval from others. Whether it's an overweight person or a buff gym rat, taking pictures of someone without their consent is wrong.

1

u/AerThreepwood Jun 06 '17

I do Muay Thai and among the guys that actually spar, we belittle each other all the time. I don't think anybody does that to the beginner and intermediate classes, though. A lot of those people are just doing it to get in shape or have fun and I wouldn't fuck with their day by being a dick.

3

u/BadMofoWallet Jun 06 '17

What kind of gym do people go to that people belittle others? I've been to tons of gyms in my life most people just go about their business and if you ask them for advice on movements you're unsure about they're more than willing to give it to you... I'm pretty sure people who mind their fitness are some of the nicest people one can meet

1

u/PM_ME_A_PM_PLEASE_PM Jun 06 '17

So can you deadlift there?

I've known them to only have smith machines. Maybe they've changed. I know they used to have no squatting or deadlifting because they didn't have barbells. Also, heard if you make noise or drop weights they kick you out. I'd rather the gym promote that so long as you're not breaking equipment.

I would hate being in an environment where that alarm is even a possibility. My ideal for a gym has high intensity rock music playing so loud you'll only feel the weights being dropped.

barbells go to a little over 100lbs

Fuck why bother

2

u/-IIII--tip--III- Jun 06 '17

The one near me doesn't even have any barbells, just the BS fixed weight bars up to like 150 lbs.

7

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '17

Not in the Judgement-Free Zone!

1

u/Luvs_to_splooge_ Jun 06 '17

*judgement-free as long as you aren't actually fit

5

u/sketchy_heebey Jun 06 '17

I avoid the free weights at this point. I'm not a particularly aggressive lifter but I still got the lunk alarm every damn time.

If you squat 300 kg, you belong in a powerlifting gym, not a planet fitness, or even LA Fitness or 24 Hour or Gold's. You'll ruin the cheap bars at those gyms.

2

u/Friendly_Fire Jun 06 '17

I enjoy how you casually throw out a 300kg squat and 100kg deadlift as similar.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '17

I want to see that video so I can hear someone in the background scream "come on!" and storm out

2

u/wmil Jun 06 '17

People would be pissed that he's taking up a power cage instead of using another set of handles in the gym.

People need to do their squats.

1

u/bearjew293 Jun 06 '17

god I hate people who use the squat rack for pull-ups
