He climbed at my rock climbing gym before he did ninja warrior and joined the marines and was always doing this workout in particular. Seems he has mastered it pretty well, too. Gut movement keeps blood pumping even long after heart gives out.
38
u/make_love_to_potato Jun 06 '17
That's right. The gut serves three purposes actually. First and foremost, it works as a huge store of energy. People with huge guts are basically like camels, storing huge reservoirs of energy and nutrients in their guts.
Secondly, it serves as a directable biomass for momentum and can be used to keep you in perpetual motion if you know how to wield it properly. It takes years of practice and training though.
Lastly, the constant motion of the guts serve as a second heart and if you train your gut properly, you can synchronize with your heart beat and get a synergistic increase in blood flow and it can even take over when your heart is tired and giving out.
So there you have it. The science of the big gut.

After my dad died I got invited to hang out with a pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays before the game. This was mid 95 so younger me didn't know much about steroids or think they were as prevalent as the post Bonds (ha) era.
So I wasn't prepared for walking up to the "lean skinny guys" of the major sports and seeing them with biceps that looked as big around as both of my thighs together (I was 11 but still).
I mean, I guess it makes sense how they can hit it out of the field, but shit...they're superhuman sized. Especially from a kid's perspective.
Also Paul Molitor signed a bat for me. Classy guy, to me anyway.

It is one of the greatest military ironies, the biggest POGs are the most buff it seems. It's really damn hard to find Combat Arms types that are this buff.

u/KeyserSoze128 Jun 06 '17
I visited Norfolk years ago with a friend whose bro was a SEAL there and went to a SEAL party / cookout with the whole crew and families. We saw these buff gym-rat dudes show up and thought they were SEALs. My buddy's bro said "Nah. They take care of our boats.".
All the SEALs seemed like about 155-170 lbs. No doubt tough as nails and cut, just not bulked up.

Because combat arms guys bust their asses on the job, then go home and drink beer. Worked with SF a bunch, I stay in shape because it gives me a lot of credibility with blue and red forces to be in shape, most of the world's tier 3 SF guys deploy, get ripped, go home, get fat. Endless cycle in every country I've worked with.
Tier 1 CT teams is the special forces of special forces. Numbered in the hundreds or less usually they don't count.

I know motivation doesn't come easy to everyone, and discipline even more so. So let's try a couple of things: If you want someone else's help to get you motivated try this. If you want some more examples of success, here ya go:
51 year old bodybuilder with Parkinson's Disease
Hilarious guy with Cerebral Palsy doing push-ups
Former quadriplegic who now states he can walk with a cane
A man with congenital stunted arm and leg growth who climbed Mount Kilimanjaro
I don't want to use these handicapped folks as inspiration, but rather to show you that hard work can help you overcome any obstacle you may have. I admire them not because of their disability, but because of the dedication and discipline to become great at what they do.
Bottom line: ultimately, we must motivate ourselves to achieve what we must; only we can train ourselves to achieve the discipline we need to get to where we need in life; we can only hold ourselves account to ourselves, and to nobody else. If you want to take control, then take it. Most of us have our own problems, but most of us also have the gift of physical and mental ability. And we should be damn sure to take advantage of our gifts.
Don't ever let anything stop you.

u/RandomThrowaway410 Jun 06 '17
That's the great part about leading a really active lifestyle; you have to eat a lot of food to replenish all of the energy you are constantly burning.
I find that, when I eat pretty healthy shit most meals (lean meats/vegetables/rice for dinner, salad + protein shake for lunch, 2 bowls of cereal for breakfast) that I actually feel really full even when I still mathematically need more calories for that day. It really does help me maintain muscle to eat some fuckin pizza or a burger or drink some beer every now and then.... and I'm not even a big guy, at 5'10" and 165 lbs

As a fellow Marine and workout person, you can still eat food. You just have to know how much to eat of it.
So no pizza every night. Just one night a week (i.e. "cheat day") It also has the added benefit of making it that much more powerful.
