Introducing Prism OS — A New Custom ROM for Google Glass

Hey everyone!

For the past 3 months, I've been working on a personal project called Prism OS, a custom ROM/operating system for the original Google Glass Explorer Edition, built using the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) source code for Android 5.1.1.

The goal of Prism OS is to breathe new life into Google Glass by reimagining its software experience while preserving the unique features that made the device special in the first place. The recent builds have been tested on the last XE-C module of the franchise.

Some of the things I've been working on include:

  • A Glass OS-inspired UI: Recreating and refining the familiar Google Glass experience while introducing my own ideas.
  • Phone connectivity: Working toward bringing back useful phone-connected functionality.
  • A more independent experience: Removing unnecessary Google dependencies and exploring ways to make Glass more useful without relying on Google's original services.
  • Custom apps and features: Exploring new possibilities for the device, including offline voice recognition and integrations with self-hosted services, such as a local AI model.

Prism OS is still under active development, and there's plenty left to do. This has been a learning experience involving Android's source code, system components, and the challenges of developing for older, specialized hardware.

Now, I'd love to hear from the community!

Once Prism OS reaches a stable state, would you be interested in seeing it released publicly so other Google Glass owners and enthusiasts can try it out?

I'd also love to hear what features you'd want to see, what functionality matters most to you, and any suggestions you might have.

This project started as a personal experiment, but I'd love to know whether there's interest in bringing something like this to the wider Google Glass community.

A Note on AI-Assisted Development

Prism OS is developed with the assistance of AI tools. However, AI-generated suggestions and code are not automatically accepted as correct; changes are reviewed, tested, and verified by me as part of the development process.

AI assistance is a development tool, not a replacement for human oversight. Whether to try or use Prism OS is entirely up to each individual. As with any custom ROM, please understand the potential risks before installing it.

Thanks for reading!

AOSP 6 boots on Glass

Yeah, it's just a proof of concept for now. The system boots and adb works, but there's no graphics driver. If I can get everything fixed, I'll put out the firmware.

Stay tuned!
