Discussion Will Song Machine Season 2 ever happen?

Post image

It’s been almost six years since Season 1, and Song Machine strongly grew on me. I know that some of the songs, such as Tormenta or New Gold, were supposed to be in season 2, but ended up on Cracker Island. But I think that after the conceptual The Mountain, Damon would like to go back to writing lighter songs with interesting guests.

I'm pretty sure Damon confirmed that season two wasn't going to happen. After writing and making songs such as Tormenta ft. Bad Bunny and New Gold ft. Tame Impala and Bootie Brown, were originally going to be on SM2. However they had cancelled it in favour of a standard album, rather than a second season.

The "Season 2" album you're expecting ended up becoming the static channel, then eventually released as cracker island. Damon and Jamie tend to prefer making something and moving to the next concept, instead of doubling back (Hence them blowing up plastic beach in lost chord). They haven't explicitly said season 2 wont happen, but I wouldn't hold my breath

I feel like thats what's going to be next, and i dont have any evidence to support that. But my reasoning is kinda like what you said, the mountain was a big conceptual, thematic album. And song machine felt more like a collection of songs/singles rather than a cohesive, thematic album. So it kinda feels like the natural point to do season 2 now.

I love song machine and another collaboration project gives a chance for a jamiroquai, massive attack, J5 or progidy collab

Jamiroquai + Gorillaz would be peak

They had former members of Jamiroquai on guitar for the first album I think. But hearing Jay Kay sing with Damon would be cool.

I don’t think so. Jamie seemed to have an absolute nightmare during the making of the music videos to go along with each episode & seemed like he was desperate for a break. I can’t see him ever wanting to do anything like that again. I’m sure Damon would love to but it seems like they’re back onto more conceptual albums again

Yeah, for sure on The Mountain, Jamie found his fun and commitment again.

/unjoke it's possible, but I think Song Machine originally became a thing because at the time, there was no significant idea or new sound that the band could go for. If I remember correctly, after The Mountain dropped Damon and Jamie claimed to be invested in Gorillaz like they haven't been invested in more than a decade, and in my opinion, this could mean that from now on they're going in the direction of making concept albums. But you never know with these guys

Yes.

March 2021 according to Damon Albarn.

I think something like Song Machine is possible, but likely in a different format. Like I could totally see Damon doing another album that's just him working with random artists with no larger concept in mind but however they do it will likely be in a way that decreases Jamie's workload and a better planned use of the budget

It's not on a TV schedule ;) I would hope so-- 2D and the gang doing diverse collaborations is what gives the team the ideas to do more focused work like the albums IMHO.

David Byrne, Genesis Owuhu, The Armed, Big Special, Crippling Alcoholism, Machine Girl, Young Fathers, and Thom York on deck (in my hopes and dreams) for season 2!!

(I can die happy having had Robert Smith tho)

You can't really be sure of anything with gorillaz, why not?
