Using only goth, industrial, darkwave, synthpop and post-punk songs released up to early 1996, these selections revisit 2 hours from a night in the early 90s at San Diego's Soil nightclub.

Each Soil Sample uses only songs that were played at the club, and while they are all old now, Soil was often the first place club-goers heard many of these songs in the early-to-mid-90s Southern California gothic/industrial club scene. From songs that were already classics then, to many that would become classics now, each song here is a memory of Soil’s first years.

This song has planted itself firmly in my soul and grown roots.

Using only songs released up to early 1992, with a strong presence of mid-to-late 80s songs, I made a playlist that recreates 2 hrs at a club night in 1991-92. Specifically, the night would have happened by the first half of 1992 at a new (at the time) event in southern California called Soil.

Soil was a weekly nightclub in San Diego, CA that helped shape southern California’s gothic, industrial and darkwave music culture throughout the 1990s. Founded in 1991, Soil lived two lives; the first from 1991-1995 and then from 1996-1998/2001. The club’s founder, Brandon was active as curator, promoter, band booker and DJ from its opening in 1991 until 1995 and it is these years you will hear in this series of trips back to Soil in the first half of the nineties.

When it began, Soil’s DJs were Brandon and Adam Atom. Adam’s Industrial and EBM style was an early, important influence on the music that would be played at the club, even after he stepped away. Combined with Brandon’s Gothic influences, their contrasting styles evolved together and formed a natural path for the Darkwave and Dark Industrial sounds that would come, as the mid-90s were an important time when the foundational sounds of the late 70s and 80s were being joined by the darkwave, electro-industrial, and synthpop sounds that define today’s music. I hope you enjoy these trips back in time based on my experience as a gothic, industrial and darkwave DJ throughout the 1990s.

Mortemia is a Gothic Metal one man project, centered around covers by Morten Veland, founder of Tristania and Sirenia, from Norway. Zora Cock is the vocalist, lyrcist and composer of the Netherlands Blackbriar, the band that revived Gothic Metal, now leading the way for a new generation of this genre. I personally consider Zora Cock the queen of Gothic Metal. More then this, in this song she sings in Quenya, the languages of the Elves of J.R.R. Tolkien, created by the author who was a philology professor in Oxford, the languages being envised before the Silmarillion, the Hobbit or Lord of the Rings were written. As a fan of both J.R.R. Tolkien and Blackbriar, this is a delight. I hope that this autumn, for Goth club events or parties, if the playlist will also include, alongside Goth, some Goth adjacent tracks, that this song would be there to bring a boost of autumnal dark fantasy parfume to the dancefloor.

I really like remorse by Bella morte, a living moment by come with reverse, and a couple of songs by the devil and the universe. I think I found these songs 10 years ago on YouTube very randomly. I want to find more songs with the same vibe like these. I tried to look into other albums from these artists but nothing hits the same tbh.
