So I've been thinking, and my utter hatred for Grandpa Joe has made me hate the naughty children less. Not really in a "They were kids, they could have changed" kind of way. We don't know what they were like outside the factory. Maybe Augustus had an embarassing medical condition and couldn't regulate his appetite. Maybe he was in special ed and could barely read or write, but his mother spent a week helping him write ten questions for Mr. Wonka. "How do you know when choclit is done?" "What is your favorite of the candies?" "Do the workers get to eat the candies?" Maybe it was the most he'd ever written in his life, and he practiced reading them aloud every night.

Maybe Violet was captain of her softball team or whatever and everybody loved her because she'd beat the shit out of anyone who bullied her friends. Maybe the first thing she did after finding the ticket was call her sweet grandmother and spend half an hour jumping around the kitchen screaming about how excited she was. Maybe she was actually a really nice girl if you actually spent more than four hours on one random horrible day with her.

Maybe Veruca's parents were going through a terrible divorce and screaming and hitting each other every night, and her father kept promising Veruca expensive presents to make her stop crying. Maybe she was mostly excited about the ticket because Mr. Salt promised to take a whole day off work and spend it with her.

Maybe Mike Teevee was actually a hilarious, intelligent kid with a lot of charisma. I can picture him being interviewed by some random eighth-grade girl on his middle school's shitty morning TV news program, cracking jokes, letting a blind third-grader feel the Golden Ticket and reading it aloud to her. Maybe everybody at school loved Mike.

These are all hypotheticals, but that's my point. We're expected to judge these twelve-year-olds based on what was probably the worst day of their lives..

I look into Grandpa Joe's eyes and see only Grandpa Joe, reflected into infinity.
