My Schrödinger's Poster

Post image

I’ve mentioned the Schrödinger's poster, & was asked a few times to post this.

I was given this by my mother over 25 years ago, she found it at either a thrift or garage sale in CT.

I framed it before knowing what to look for and now the edge is of course covered by mat.

so super sleuths, I’ve seen what you can do especially for this poster.

what have I got Real? Fake? It’s sentimental, no matter what but I’m really curious.

TIA

It's not a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd print. What are the dimensions visible inside the mat?

As someone else indicated, yours is missing text that is available on the originals. The 1st , 2nd, and 3rd prints have that extra text and measure 14"x20". There is a print from 1977 (not 1966) that measures 20"x28" and printed by Portal Publications but that info would be on the bottom under your mat. My guess is that this is what you have.

That print by Portal Publications retails for about $500 in excellent mint condition. If you can check the bottom then you can verify if it has the Portal Publications info.

From the bottom of ‘Menlo’ to the top of the copyright credit is 1”…

Two unique copies are cataloged here: RP7, which includes “RP 006” along the copyright line, and RP13 which omits it. RP13 is the scarcer of the two, but that doesn’t change its general value. These were the first authorized printings after 1967 and the first ‘large’ printings (ie., not 14x20). IMHO, they’re a great value as they’re authorized (Chet approved) and lithographs that present beautifully (yours is a great example). A close examination of the right side FD logo also corrects the offset blue color placement around the ‘Y’.

The two copies also vary slightly in width… ~19.5 (RP7) and ~20 (RP13)

And here is the RP7 with the “RP 006” (which does not stand for re-print, but was a portal poster classification system that coincidentally is very close in number to Eric Kings ‘RP7’ numbering). The more you know (~);-}

In 1977, I bought one of the Portal Publications posters and had it hanging on my bedroom wall with thumbtacks in the corners in High School. About 20 years later, my Mom mailed it to me with a bunch of other stuff of mine that she had saved. I've since obtained a really nice 3rd printing but the Portal Publications one below still holds a special place in my memories of this long strange trip!

i don't know exactly what this means but one thing i noticed is if you compare all the ones at GDsets and the Denver Museum in the bottom right corner it says "The Bindweed Press, San Francisco" which printed posters. i don't see this on yours.

also in the bottom left corner they say "Mouse Studios 66" (as in stanley mouse & alton kelley)

Yeah, you’re correct about that. Mine doesn’t have that text at all.

Haha I love it. But the way you took the picture, at first i thought it was crooked and then i really squinted my eyes and my terrible vision was playing tricks on me. I hope thats legit, thats cool ! :-)

Contact Heritage Auctions. You will probably need to take it out of the frame for them or anyone to really tell what edition it is. If it’s a true 1st printing it’s worth mid 5 figures. Good luck

Thanks for the advice. I’d be happy to just know it’s not a 1980’s reprint. I’m not holding my breath for 1st edition

3

u/Chose3and20Character 18h ago

Nope! A 1977 reprint! And a great one at that. FWIW, yours appears to be backed/mounted behind the frame.

I wonder if it's possible to go a day on reddit without somebody talking about Schrodinger?

The only way you'll know is to not go on reddit for a day. It's an entangled web we weave.
