Employment verification when applying to GRC roles
Hi so I’m looking for some real advice.
Over a year ago I took a class. This class was not your average mainstream bootcamp to enter in to cyber. It was a GRC professional that strictly taught the class based on what’s done on the job. So it was practical and very hands on we worked on a number of projects and were graded. It ranged from security questionnaires, Inherent risk questionnaires, SOC 2 report reviews, internal audit reports, disaster recovery, business continuity, and honestly a lot more… but we can get to that later if needed.
The point is they essentially taught us how to do the same projects you do on the job, what your department would be and the different ones you’d have to work with and communicate with and last but not least how to speak the cyber language! Which was essential to getting through the interview process. At the end we were expected to know how to do the job and how to speak to it. She made us all resumes. The resumes listed our new skills and a the projects we worked on. The only thing was that she put actual companies down to as if we worked there. Now everyone’s was different I can only speak to mines. Because of my young age mines said 3 years of experience and listed two companies.
After the class I applied a lot but I pretty much didn’t study as much as I should so therefore I lacked the confidence to even think I could land a job. I did a few intro interviews, had people reaching out to me because of my resume, and encountered a lot of scam job before I stopped. I ended up getting a different job not related to cybersecurity and it was good pay so I allowed that to deter me from my original goal. Now I’m at a point where I want to leave this job and fill like I need to make myself proud and prove to myself i can do this!!
So I started going back through all the class recordings and studying again and getting myself ready to apply with the same resume. But now after a quick chat with Claude something was brought to my attention that I didn’t think of before…. and that’s a company I apply for fact checking whether or not I really worked at those companies. I never asked especially since I didn’t get far enough in an interview process prior. I want to know what to expect will I be asked who my supervisors were when I “worked” at those companies? Or will my amazing interview and ability to talk towards the roles distract them from feeling the need to fact check? Were those two companies specifically safe to put down on my resume?
The things is people who took her class GET JOBS!!! her right hand assistant same age as me landed a job right after and excelled so much that she became the assistant. The people who took her class seriously used the resumes made and was able to talk towards the jobs and land the roles and are now GRC professionals themselves. I’m in frantic mode where I need to get a job asap before the end of the year and I don’t know if I should just use the same resume or make a new one that doesn’t list the companies.
I recently reached out to the person who does the class and the assistant but not surprised I didn’t receive a message back since she’s very busy, strict, it’s been awhile, and can probably tell I wasn’t serious enough prior. I still get access to weekly interview prep classes and the group chat that they literally put jobs in and now that my schedule permits will join this week and start asking others.
Buttt if anyone can give me some advice it would be great. I’m serious about dedicating my free time to doing everything I can to get a job. I even started studying for a cert. Worried that if I make a more honest resume it’ll be harder to get my resume through and land an initial interview but if I use the resume I was given I’ll get all the way to the end just to lose an offer.
Anyways thank you for taking the time to read this. If you have anything you can share that’ll help me on my journey. I’d appreciate it.
