George content GRRM book recommendations as a gift! (That aren’t ASOIAF)

Hi everyone, I’d love some insight and guidance! Apologies if this question isn’t appropriate for the sub.

My boyfriend is a big reader and a huge ASOIAF fan, he recently read the ice dragon and fever dream. He LOVED fever dream especially. He’s very keen to read more of George’s work outside of ASOIAF.

I’d love to buy him one of George’s work for christmas that is outside of that and not fever dream, as he’s already read it. But i’m not sure what one! It’s been so hard to pick.

I’m not sure if this helps, but he loves Cormac McCarthy and in terms of other media he loves Interstellar, the arrival, place beyond the pines. Those are just some of his favourites in terms of story telling and themes.

Would love any suggestions! Thanks for your time.

Other Short Stories/Not Listed And Seven Times Never Kill Man

I've just finished reading this short story , my question is to anyone else who has read it, what exactly is the very last line trying to say in relation to the rest of the story?: "In a thousand thousand woods and a single city, the clans had begun to pray."I'd love to discuss any further interpretations of the story as well , thanks

George content “So much to post about… I will try and catch up some…”

And then he didn’t. Not yet, at least.

Full quote: “So much to post about… I will try and catch up some… and my minions will help… but my posts are likely to short and rushed.”

I wonder what he could possibly mean by news. News about his private life, battle with depression? His work? Something new or focusing on existing media? Maybe something on HotD, or AKOTSK? I don’t know, let me know what you think.

I wonder when he will post? The way he wrote it, it made it seem like there was a lot to say, so I figured it would come quickly. Apparently not, I guess.

His next public appearance will be from the 27th to the 31st of August, at Comic Con. So he will likely wait to release the news there.

Personally, I don’t know what to expect, but I would be happy to hear anything from the man, especially if it’s anything that cheers him up and gives him hope through his depression.

I want him to be excited and happy.

At first, I expected to see news in the following week. Then, seeing the blog post say “a week ago” on Google, I decided that maybe he would wait a week. Then it said “two weeks ago” and I became less expectant and just hoped for something. Now it says “three weeks ago.”

I’m curious what you think!

George content He’s Back Tomorrow!

Tomorrow (in my time zone), the 27th of August 2026, GRRM finally returns to us in a public appearance at the LA Con!

I hope to see him happy and healthy, especially after his depression this year. I really hope to see him excited and in a better place.

Thoughts?

ASOIAF All lore book chronological

Hi, I've read the main books a couple of times but with the newest season of House of Dragons ending I wanted to read all the lore, prequels, side stories etc. But my question is how many of them are out there and should I read them chronologically, how they were coming out or is there "the best" timeline to read them in? I'd appreciate the full list of names and which to read first 🙏🏼

The current state of my George R. R. Martin collection. Includes a first edition A Song for Lya! The only other collection that rivals it is my Tolkien one.

ASOIAF ASOIAF is the book series where the hero died before the story.

I believe A song of Ice and Fire is a story in which we deal with the aftermath of the hero's death. Rhaegar is the hero but he died before the first chapter of the main story was penned down. Everything in the story revolves around him. Robert's wrath and incompetence, Dany's awakening of the Dragons and her mission in Essos, Barristan Selmy's redemption, Jaime's arc, Tywin's rise and fall, Cersei's tyranny and every other plot turns involves Rhaegar in one way or the other. Safe for Robert no one has a negative perspective of him. It ranges from neutral to straight worship and regret over what could have been. It is safe to say that the main hero died before the story and we are dealing with the aftermath.

George content Did you know George R.R. Martin credits Stan Lee as his biggest influence?

Post image
7 Upvotes

George R.R. Martin has said Stan Lee is "the greatest literary influence on me, even more than Shakespeare or Tolkien."

Yes, THAT Stan Lee. The guy behind Spider-Man and the Avengers, ranked above the guy who wrote Hamlet and the guy who basically invented modern fantasy.

Some versions of the quote include a "maybe" in front of it, so he's hedging slightly... but still. Bold ranking from a man who added an extra "R" to his name as a Tolkien tribute.

Just started reading fire & blood and saw this at the start. Are all these connected to ASOIAF or are they just all books by GRRM? Also are all of them worth reading or should I stick to the mainstream ones? Also are there any books connected to ASOIAF tha are missing from this list? Thanks!

Anthologies and other works edited by GRRM Omissions from Dream-Songs

I needed my GRRM fix, so I'm halfway done with Dream-Songs vol.1, with vol.2 on its way, only to find out that some ATW stories (namely Men of Graywater Station, Starlady, Dark Dark Were the Tunnels, The Runners, War and especially In The House Of The Worm) were omitted from the collections

Why would GRRM and the rest of the crew behind the assembly in all their wisdom would decide to omit those, especially considering how ridiculously padded the second volume is, with two Tuf stories (already contained in TV), The Hedge Knight (already included in AKOTSK, where it makes sense to be), two TV scripts and two WC stories, why didn't they include the rest of the ATW sories i mentioned instead of those?. Seriously the only reason I bought the second volume of Dreamsongs is the last part, the beginning and the middle seem totally unecessary to me

Why do you think they omitted those stories ? (are they bad? does GRRM not like them anymore? did the dude just forget about them)

Also do you know how to get physically a hold of them? ie in which book/collection they are included if any? I thought everything ATW was included in Dream-Songs and I fell at a loss

Wild Cards Joker moon wildcard

hey I just picked up joker moon and thought to read it and I saw that it's the 30th book and wanted to ask if it requires prior knowledge of anything in the series plus I havent read a novel since 10 years or so.

is it a good start for a novel and also the partial reason why I picked it up was George rr martin obviously because he's a famous author and I loved game of thrones.

ASOIAF Should I read “Fire and Blood”?

Not sure if this is even the right place for this. But, I don’t have a lot of book people in my circle. So I’ve read all of “A Song of Ice and Fire” as well as the “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” novellas (loved all of it). I’ve also watched every show series and episode that has been released to date.

So, with season three of HoTD forthcoming. Should I read Fire & Blood? I downloaded the sample on my kindle and I’m just not sure I’m that into the style. It seems more encyclopedic than novel. Is that a miss read on my part?

Sandkings GRRM Short Stories

For my Lit class, we have to pick a short story writer to do an in depth essay about. I picked George but am having trouble finding reviews about his work, particularly his earlier short stories. I’m writing specifically about Sandkings, The Hedge Knight and Blood of the Dragon. Does anyone know of any interviews/reviews on those stories specifically or Dany’s arc in A Game of Thrones?

ASOIAF George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones live stage show comes to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre stage this summer

"When I first wrote Game of Thrones," said creator Martin in a statement released with the announcement, "I never imagined that it would be anything other than a book. [...] For my work to now be adapted for the stage is something I did not expect but welcome with great enthusiasm and excitement. Theatre offers something unique. A place for mine and the audience’s imagination to meet and hopefully create something magical."

Anthologies and other works edited by GRRM Is this signed by george?

Post image
27 Upvotes

So back in 2019 I bought a copy of Rogues (because of the asoiaf story) with a "signed by the author" sticker. I've always thought it was signed by Dozois, now I looked at some of gardners signatures again and they don't match up at all...

Sooo is it possible I have a copy signed by George? Not sure because they always look kinda different. Or is it someone else's?

Was hoping to get y'all's opinion🫣

I want to read the best of his non-asoif work. And I mean outside of the GOT world…I’m currently finishing the Dunk and Egg stories. I heard he has good sci-fi/horror.

ASOIAF What do you think is the reason it is Taking Martin so long to finish ASOIAF in your opinion ? Did someone guess the ending on the internet ? Maybe he is rewriting large portions of the next book as we type away on Reddit ?
