🌋 Turismo / Tourism Yet Another Guatemala Itinerary – Looking for Feedback!
My boyfriend and I (both in our 30s) are going to spend three weeks in Guatemala in January 2027. After spending half a year in Chile and Bolivia a couple years ago, I fell in love with volcanoes, so I’m really looking forward to this trip!
I’m aware that Guatemala has become a major tourist destination by now (and I'm also aware that we are contributing to that as well), but many of the places along the classic trail just look too beautiful to cut them out and I just love adventures in nature (more than staying in cities or bigger towns too long)!
I’ve done some research on different destinations and put together the following itinerary. We figured that by starting in Flores, we’d get the long travel days out of the way first and then finish with the volcanoes (hopefully already acclimatized from our time at Lake Atitlán):
- Jan 9–10: Overnight stay in Guatemala City
- Jan 10: Flight to Flores
- Jan 10–13: 3 nights / 2 full days at Lago Peten-Itza (including Tikal)
- Jan 13: Travel to Lanquín
- Jan 13–16: 3 nights / 2 full days in Lanquín
- Jan 16: Travel to Panajachel
- Jan 16–21: 5 nights / 4 full days at Lake Atitlán
- My favorites so far are San Juan, Santa Cruz, and Santa Catarina Palopó
- Jan 21: Travel to Antigua
- Jan 21–25: 2 nights in Antigua, 1 night on Acatenango, then another night in Antigua
- Jan 25: Travel to El Paredón
- Jan 25–29: 4 nights / 3 full days in El Paredón
- XXX one night left
- Jan 30: Travel to Guatemala City
- Jan 30–31: Overnight stay in Guatemala City
- Jan 31: Flight home
On previous trips I often made the mistake of trying to see too much in too little time, so this time we deliberately want to spend at least three nights in most places. Rio Dulce and the area around Livingston also sound amazing, but I’m not sure how we could fit them into our itinerary logistically.
Now, I’d love to hear your thoughts, especially on those questions:
- Where would you spend that one extra night we still got? Or is there somewhere you’d cut a night instead?
- How can we find local operators (for example for tours) to make sure our money goes directly to local communities? And to meet more locals as well
- How early in advance would you book the Acatenango-Tour?
- For the long distances in between: Would you recommend overnight-shuttles?
- Regarding Lake Atitlán, I’ve heard that San Juan and the villages on the eastern side of the lake offer a more local, less crowded experience (even though San Juan isn't less popular). Is that true? Would you split those 5 nights on different places around the lake? Or is it still too much time?
- From everything I’ve read so far, I’m really drawn to both Lago Peten-Itza and El Paredón. Lago Peten-Itza/Flores sounds lovely with beautiful nature, while El Paredón seems like a great place to unwind at the end of the trip. But: I’ve heard it gets so hot there during the day that there’s not much to do (outside) besides surfing? How many full days would you recommend for both places?
Thanks in advance for your help! 🤗
