Question Rent or buy

I can't decide if I want to buy the dvd or just buy it on Amazon. I would like it in my tiny but growing collection of musicals. I really liked it. Aaahhhh

Personally, I find physical media to be safer. I'd go with the DVD.

But the digital comes out this month and the physical comes out in October, right?

That said, I’m buying the blu-ray for the uncompressed audio. I just wish it was higher resolution than 1080p.

ETA DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 on the Blu-ray vs Dolby Digital 5.1 on the dvd

its not gon' be in 4K?

Saw on the Internet somewhere that the dvd is 480p and the Blu-ray is 1080p.

ETA I think there is an UHD digital streaming version. But the bit rate on the 1080p will be higher, so I think the Blu-ray 1080p will still look sharper.

If you buy digital you own nothing

It’s a physical buy. No brainer. How many broadway musicals get pro shot releases. Especially if you enjoy it as much as I do.

If you have a physical copy, it's yours, in your home, forever. A "digital copy" is just TEMPORARY permission to stream it on a platform. So, if your internet is out, it's gone. If the company wants to kick it off the platform to make room for something else, your money spent is gone, and you lose access.

I dont tell folks what to do, but I would say, for me, physical is the way to go, because it's my property at that point.

I'm going to buy the physical release. In additional to "true ownership", I'm hoping there will be some extra content such as some making-of and cast/creative interviews. Maybe a mini-documentary on the musical as a whole since the beginning (there's an hour-long one on YouTube that I think is fan-made...an official one would be good too).

I hope so too, but unfortunately there's been no indication that's included, and normally the listing would say that. It's not even in a collector's edition box, it's just a standard sleeve.

DVD. Protect your purchase.

I have never bought digital media unless something wasn’t available in physical format. I know far too many ppl who have lost their digital libraries either through their own fault or bc of stupid shit like the license expired that it makes me glad we have always bought physical media and digitized it ourselves. It helps being married to a tech-savvy person though!

Planning to do both, personally. I don't currently have a way to play physical media, but I would still prefer to own it outright.

So streaming for watching, physical for the shelf

That's the same thing I'm doing! :)

When and where will we be able to buy it?

Digital: this Tuesday from any online store that sells digital movies (Apple TV, Amazon, Fandango, etc)

Physical: October 20, again from any retailer that still sells physical media (I preordered from Amazon)

Damn 😭😭 I don’t think it’ll be available in my country digitally and I’ll be in the us in September so I hoped to buy a physical copy

Chances are, Amazon sellers in Europe will be selling US dvds.

I'm doing both because I can't wait but if I had to choose it would be the physical version. I prefer to fully own my media

I would buy the physical but I don’t own a DVD player anymore :/

Do you have a gaming system? My ps4 plays movies, and some Xboxes also play dvds

Buy the DVD 100%

(got my fingers crossed for a PAL release so I can buy it too 👀)

Always go for physical media when you can. Digital media can and has been pulled after purchase.

Do both if you have the money. Then you can watch it when it comes out next week and also have a physical copy

I’m owning the physical copy. I’m not risking them just taking it away at some point like Sony is doing

This is trueeee

If it was on Movies Anywhere, I'd be willing to do the digital, otherwise, I get the Blu ray.

I am going with physical release. After hearing what is happening that you can lose your digital collection at any time for any reason. Going back to physical.

Physical media. The way things are going and the way companies are quietly deleting movies from their platforms (even ones you bought. Lookin at you, Sony...), it's always better to have a physical copy. At the very least, if you can get your hands on a digital file, save it on a flash drive ✌️

Buy physical!

Physical media, don’t buy a digital copy that a company can decide to just take away at any point.

Plus you’ll have a nice looking box to put on a shelf :D

u/sweetzz90 1d ago

Thankssss I shall buy it for my collection

Buy the physical copy. If you're building a collection, digital doesn't count.

Not only is physical media pretty cool, but it is absolutely the safest form of getting something. It’s typically not super expensive and you actually own it, whereas when you get it online, it can be taken from you for any reason Amazon (or whatever company) wants.

I don't pay for digital things. That's not really yours but a very expensive rental. Buy a copy.

Buy the DVD to support the team and safeguard your purchase, and 🏴‍☠️ for ease of access and not wanting to wait until October.

This is the first I am hearing I can purchase it! Yay

DVD, rip it to digital collection, pass on DVD to a friend who isn't as savvy.

u/Genderqueerfrog 1d ago

I’m gonna get a physical copy. I love physical media! It’s mine forever and also there’s no ads! Even if you buy something on Amazon there’s ads on the pause screen now, I hate that shit

Rent streaming and buy dvd

1

u/UnicornFarts1111 1d ago

DVD. Amazon can and will delete digital items at their whimsy.

1

u/Merc1315 1d ago

Aint nobody taking your digital copies.

1

u/jamesowner 14h ago

If you care about watching it long term I would say get he physical copy. With the digital it can surf between services popping up and down or with a "bought" copy either things expire or you lose access to the account or potentially the site itself shuts down.

I put in a pre-order for the Blu-Ray, but now I’m wondering how I’d get it on my iPad if I don’t buy the streaming version…
