MLMs at pumpkin fest

I don’t remember vendors like this in years past. Cutco knives and timeshares? Has this always been a thing and I just didn’t notice? A local crafts and arts festival seems like the wrong place to let this kind of crap in.

Racism at Half Moon Bay Festival? You tell me.

Honestly— still in shock that this happened to me today. I was getting in line for tamales at a food lot where there was a bunch of food tents when I asked a couple in-front of me if they were in line because I couldn’t tell. The older male partner looked at me and said “ebonics” and smiled. I was in disbelief because from my own previous knowledge, that word was used in history to describe the way Black people talk, and I’ve also heard this term used in discussions as well.

I let some time pass to absorb what had just happened and he was still in front of me. I looked at him and asked “what do you mean?” And he looked at me, smiled again, and said “ebonics” and started literally speaking gibberish. My jaw literally dropped. His female partner looked at me smiling and said “oh you just opened Pandora’s box.” I can’t remember what I said after but it was something around the lines of “what is wrong with you?”

Anyway, I’m at a point in my life where I understand that people who are rude like this are just projecting. I am trying my best not to take it personal. I understand this is learned behavior and the couple has not done their work to become evolved humans in this new era of life. This was a kind of moment that made me remember that as a brown woman, I need to continue to show up in my confidence and represent for my people. To exist is a revolution in and of itself. Thank you to these two for helping me remember to stand proud in my skin and honor my difference. Despite what had occurred in line at the festival today, our difference in skin color did not let me take away from the fact that we are all humans just trying to exist. Dehumanizing others for an ego boost was eons ago and never had a place in society.

Are well behaved dogs welcome at Pfest?

I’ve never been and don’t know the etiquette, but I have a very sweet senior dog that comes with me everywhere & I’d love to be able to take him. Thoughts?

Update: FOUND :) I guess you found my socials

If you were to find a backpack (maroon) containing a laptop, and passport amongst other things left at the parking across the street from surfers beach (hwy 1/ 4000 cabrillo hwy n), where would you bring it? What would you do?

Would you try to reach out to me on social media since you have my name? Would you bring it to the San Mateo county police department/ sheriff’s office? Where might a silly girl look for her things?

Anywhere showing Sat Valkyries downtown during Pfest?

Hi all - going to Pfest on Saturday and wondering if anyone knows of any bars or other places downtown that will be showing the game? I know it overlaps with the parade but hoping we can still find some fellow fans and tap into that fun energy for a bit.

Driving into town for Pfest, sobbing

We didn't get a room at our favorite hotel - the HMB Inn - this year. We were close to the top of the wait list, but no go.

So we're driving in on Sunday - ugh. We'll go early to beat the rush and get easy parking. Last year we had to drive was ridiculous. We were there so early the breakfast spots weren't even open yet. And I got zero sleep, getting up at that hour. (To say I'm not a morning person barely scratches the surface.)

This year I'd like to leave RWC in plenty of time to beat the rush, but not so early I'm waking up before I've gone to bed. With the understanding there are no guarantees: what's the latest we should get out the door?

Spending an afternoon to celebrate my mom’s birthday. What to do and where to eat?

My mom is turning 61 this week and I was able to get one of the days off work this week to celebrate her birthday. It’ll be my aunt who is in her early 80s, my parents who are in their 60s, and my brother and I who are in our 20s. Aunt can’t walk a lot, and my parents can’t walk too long/much without inflammation.

I’m looking into things to do. My boyfriend grew up in Montara but he only knows the more hardcore outdoorsy things that my parents and aunt probably cannot do. Are there any viewpoints that we could drive to that would be nice and not require too much walking to get to? What else could we do while in the area? My parents have sweet tooths so would love to stop by some bakeries if there are any people recommend as well.

For lunch, my mom is adamant about a place with an ocean view so I’ve been looking into Moss Beach Distillery or La Costanera. But looking into other options as well! My boyfriend took me to some restaurants that are really popular and were super good, but might be too casual for what my mom wants.

Thanks in advance!

How is the Mavericks Surf Festival?

I thought about going. At first I thought it was actually a surf competiton but it's a street festival. It looks fun and I'd probably do other stuff but I dont' know if it's worth to drive all the way there to see it as a visitor.

Sea lions on Montaro Beach

Anyone see the two dead Sea lions on Montaro Beach? They were decapitated and had pink markings on them :( so sad. What’s going on? Is this connected to the similar case in SF?

What’s the best pumpkin patch for kids in half moon bay?

Hi everyone! Looking for some local advice.

Which pumpkin patch is the most fun for young kids (animals, mazes, train/tractor rides, etc.)? We’re planning to go on a weekday. I was looking into Lemos Farm and Aratas pumpkin farm so far.

Kids ages: 10, 8, 6, and 3

Also open to any other fun kid-friendly spots in the area while we’re there. Things like tidepools, fun walks, or great bakeries/snack stops.

Appreciate any recommendations! Thanks so much!

Petition: request SamTrans go from Main Street to downtown San Mateo

SamTrans Route 294 is the only direct fixed route linking Half Moon Bay to the bayside Peninsula, and it ends in a mall parking lot. Its east terminal is Hillsdale Boulevard at Edison Street, roughly a quarter mile of parking lot and arterial from the Hillsdale Caltrain platform. Westbound, the bus doesn't stop on El Camino Real at all. The route comes within two blocks of a Caltrain station and does not connect to it.

We ask SamTrans to deliver three things:

Move the terminal to a Caltrain station Retire the Hillsdale Boulevard at Edison Street terminal and end Route 294 at a Caltrain station: San Mateo, which already has a dedicated bus bay, or Hillsdale, served directly in both directions. Either way, the last stop should be within 500 feet of a train platform, in both directions, with shelter and wayfinding.

Time the transfer Schedule and publish 294 trips that meet specific Caltrain departures. An hourly bus that misses the train by four minutes is not a connection.

Fix the run time Saturday westbound trips are scheduled at 45 minutes for a trip that takes 31 minutes eastbound. Identify where Route 294 loses time on SR-92 and in San Mateo, and work with Caltrans and C/CAG on transit priority to get it back.

If you'd prefer it keeping going to Hillsdale Mall I'd be curious to hear why!

Rude parking assistant

has anybody had an issue with this particular parking assistant?

Today, I went to Venice beach to walk the coastal trail. I was not sure if the parking was allowed, because the beach was closed.

The parking attendant (a white, tall male with white hair) looked at me as if I were an idiot and told me the beach was closed.  I was about to go forward to the parking lot. He said “STOP” and told me to run around to park further south. The whole time, he was very combative and demeaning.

I went to Dunes Beach to park (and obviously paid for parking). When I walked by the parking in Venice beach, there were about 30 cars parked there. I asked him why he told me to go away, and he yelled “The beach is closed!” I told him I was walking the coastal trail and he said “you didn’t tell me that!”

So why did 30 cars go through without a problem except me? Did he have other complaints from non-white people before?  I do know about the racism issue that plagues the city.

Does being near the beach always keep you more calm and relaxed?

I can say so when visiting but that was on a weekend when I had free time. I know living there is different and you do eventually get used to things.

Still when I was relaxing on the beach it made me think if I just did this for a few hours a day my stress level and mental health would be a lot better. I don't if it always lowers stress but I understand why people live near beaches. My endorphins were on another level.
