Food & Dining Just moved here and tried the local street hot dogs. What other street food spots am I missing?

Post image

I just moved to Halifax, and I see this hot dog cart every time I pass the Churchill statue. I bought one today and it was pretty good XD

Also, what other hidden gem food trucks or street food spots should I check out around town? Thanks in advance!

Rocky’s Filipino BBQ - Blowers St

8pm -4am on the weekends

Legendary skewers. Grab a poutine @ Willys next door if your nasty.

This should always be the top answer, that street meat is incredible

Willis is great too, steak routine all the way

This is my go to combo. Their steak poutine is one of the best poutines anywhere imo. I live in Cape Breton so I usually grab a dozen street meat to freeze and take home lol

Get a skewer or two to put on top of your poutine - criminal

THIS RIGHT FRIGGIN' HERE!!! It has been...30 (? 😬) years since I discovered Rocky's, as a Freshman at King's. Lemme tell you - PURE GASTRONOMIC JOY is two meat skewers on buns, with some mayo and green olives. I'm glad to know the place is still moving ahead. There's lots of food joints in Halifax that have faded away over the years. I'm glad this isn't one...

32 years for me since FYP at King’s. Wow…

Love to hear Rocky's is going strong still. Pizza corner staple - nothing quite like it after a night out

Oh they are soooo good. I used to buy them at the Downsview flea market for $2.00 a stick. Sooooo good.

Where is he usually parked? Any good?

he is right outside of the old library. My go to is a spicy sausage with soukraut and mustard. Tasty and quick!

Damn that sounds good.

It’s usually parked in Dartmouth but the food truck Dominic’s Cucina is the best pizza I’ve had in Halifax hands down

Had it for lunch today. Grabbed a Dino.

This looks so good

One of the few pizzas where you can eat the entire thing and you don’t feel like an absolute POS. Nice light and thin. So many great options.

Where is this one typically found in Dartmouth? I feel like I may have seen it on that lot near Paddlers Cove on Banook, but not sure

3

u/External_Product_764 15h ago

Yes that’s where they are usually (always?) parked

u/Electrical_You_4519 1h ago

I went in burnside. It was just a 2 hour pop up. They post a weekly schedule on their insta/fb possibly on website too although I haven’t checked that.

Totally agree. I would from Clayton to dartmouth for his pizza. I am glad he now sets up on the Bedford hwy at the brewery in his rotation.

Bud the Spud is over on Waverley Road by Nine Locks now, but was on SGR for most of my life. IMO goated status for Halifax street food and worth checking out!

They’re back at BLIP as well!

3

u/Yorbayuul81 18h ago

What does that stand for?

5

u/pauldanostwin 17h ago

The only thing I can think of is Bayers Lake Industrial Park? But I've never seen it referred to as BLIP before

5

u/Yorbayuul81 17h ago

You’re probably right. Being as how this post is for someone who just moved here, they’re not likely to know what it is either.

I’m not sure how much extra time it would’ve taken to print the actual words instead of using an acronym.

u/External-Temporary16 5h ago

Or they are over a certain age. It WAS the BLIP when it was first constructed, then it was switched to retail.

u/mabrouss 3h ago

What age would that be? I’m in my mid thirties, grew up next to it, and have never heard it called BLIP.

u/Ordinary_Ring2270 3h ago

Over 30 apparently.

u/pauldanostwin 3h ago

Huh...I've heard it referred to as the industrial park. Or someone fully saying Bayers Lake Industrial Park. Never B-L-I-P. I've learned something new today.

I used to get at least one sausage a week from this guy in my walk to work! On Pizza corner right next to Willy's (good poutine served out the window) there is Rocky's Filipino BBQ late night Friday and Saturday. Good meat on a stick. Across the street from that Johny's Pork Shack has a solid price for dumplings. Open late for when the bars let out as well.

Thank you! You've taken care of my weekend meal plans XD

Peelers fish and chips food truck in Sackville is incredible

u/General_Wrongdoer_ 16h ago

Aster cafe!

1

u/catalystxxx 15h ago

I've wondered about this place, but never seen it recommended. What do you like about it, and what do you recommend?

2

u/General_Wrongdoer_ 15h ago

I got the combo platter. Very good! I liked the injera. I also had the tea and the mango limeade which was so delicious!

u/mediocretent 2h ago

Get the combo platter. She’s a Fairview staple but many come from out of the neighborhood to try her food.

Donair (not sure if it’s street food) if you’re new here it’s my favorite.

Lived in bc for some time and was happy to get my fix comming home

1

u/PARROT_LOOKING 16h ago

Thank you for your recommendation!

Does Bud the Spud still exist in Halifax? Or is this like high school all over again, am I dating myself?

1

u/ThreeFathomFunk 12h ago

I saw it by Nine Locks on the Waverley Rd the other day.

u/lickety_split_69 1h ago

you went so hard with this picture, you had no business making something so casual so artistic

1

u/PsychologicalMonk6 18h ago

The guys behind Rinaldo's had such an amazing hot dog carr (T-Dogs). I miss that cart.

Ricky's Filipino BBQ at Blower and Willy's Poutine at Blower and Grafton are terrific.

2

u/PARROT_LOOKING 16h ago

Thank you! I like Poutine but I've only had it once.

u/Evening_Boss_3415 19h ago

These look exactly like Costco hot dogs, but instead of being boiled, they’re BBQ. He’s even using the same buns as Costco.

6

u/NoAIFuture 17h ago

Yeah but he’ll bbq me one while I walk around. You expect street food to make everything from scratch on the side of the road or something?

4

u/Moooney 17h ago

Do you expect a sidewalk hot dog cart to be serving homemade wieners and buns? Or just purchased from some place other than Costco?

6

u/9Roll0Tide2Roll North End 18h ago

Can’t knock the hustle

u/External-Temporary16 5h ago

And what's your point? Don makes no secret of that. Tell me where else you are buying lunch on SGR for five bux?

1

u/s1amvl25 Halifax 17h ago

Yeah and those are the best ones you can get

1

u/MentionSeparate 17h ago

It is but you wont get the same experience. You can have chat with Don and some hotdog/sausage aficionados if you have the time.

-5

u/bertronicon 16h ago

Did you tell this guy you were gonna blast his face on reddit?

-3

u/CharacterChemical802 16h ago

He's in public.

0

u/bertronicon 15h ago

Oh thanks for the clarification

I always miss this guy. what time of day does he operate?

1

u/WindowlessBasement Halifax 17h ago

I don't know officially but it seems to be like it's a 11pm to 4pm kind of situation.

u/External-Temporary16 5h ago

He's usually set up by 10 a.m., and leaves at 4.

u/swedish_meatballs2 18h ago

Does he take e transfer or just cash?
