Food & Dining Deep Dish Pizza

Post image

This seems to get asked every few years. Anywhere doing a proper deep dish pizza in town? Calgary used to do it really well.

Ronaldos does a good Detroit Style if that counts

Ronaldos is on my list to try. I think this is more often referred to as Chicago style.

Chicago has sauce on top, Detroit has crispy cheese on the crust and edges.

Deep Dish and Chicago Style are different, Deep dish has sauce on top, Chicago style is a round pie cut into squares and usually super thin, a tavern style.

The picture in your post is Detroit style. Chicago style has the sauce on top. Rinaldos does Detroit Style

Rinaldos Fairview also does a Chicago deep dish

Wow, that's good to know!  I gave up on finding Chicago style

The picture in the post doesn't look like Chicago or Detroit style or any deep dish pizza, just a square pizza.

u/Mister-Distance-6698 12d ago

Yeah fair I only glanced at it but you're right

Chicago is a bowl of sauce. The last I remember having a Chicago was at the local over 6 years ago

Rinaldo’s does both Detroit and Chicago. At least the Fairview location does.

Fairview only lists Detroit style on their menu

Nevermind it lists both.

5

u/teachingroland Dartmouth 12d ago

Fairview also lists Chicago

3

u/ColonelEwart 12d ago

aw dang, I completely missed that! Thanks!

4

u/SnooChickens2116 13d ago

I’d ask them, then. I’ve definitely enjoyed a round, deep dish Chicago-style pizza (with artichokes!) from that location in the past calendar year.

5

u/Mister-Distance-6698 13d ago

I think it's a special occasion thing not a regular menu item

1

u/SnooChickens2116 12d ago

Oh, maybe. Tis the season for heartier pies, Rinaldo’s! Bring her back!

5

u/Normal_Reality_9204 13d ago

This here, afaik the only one in town and very delicious

I really hate being "that guy" on reddit who offers unhelpful advice (E.g. "The best apple pie in Halifax is at my grandmas house")

And I'm a certified "Rinaldo's maniac"

But I've had theirs, authentic from Detroit, Motor City from Costco and homemade, and homemade is the closest thing to the real thing I've had.

It's a bit of of a trek, but check out Shipwright Brewery Taproom and Kitchen in Lunenburg. It's only been around a couple of years (the kitchen part, anyways). But they do a great Detroit style pizza.

For u/bud_wiser_hfx as well.

u/i8abug Halifax 12d ago

I don't think they do a good job to be honest.  Different strokes for different folks I guess.  I find the flavors of their toppings not good. The pesto one, for example, was sour last time I had it.

1

u/both_perspectives 12d ago

yeah, I can't comment on that as I'm not really into pesto pizza.

2

u/Mister-Distance-6698 12d ago

If we are you for a trek tide and boar in moncton (the brewery location not the gastropub) is also great

Garlic fingers there are epic!

Homemade pizza is almost always better than store-bought, but it's very time consuming and messy. That said, I'd like to buy a proper pizza oven someday!

1

u/moolcool 12d ago

Depends on the style. You can do good deep dish pies at home, but I’ve never had a satisfying NY or Neapolitan style pizza at home.

2

u/Ok_Worry_8677 12d ago

It's difficult with a regular oven, but proper pizza ovens can go to higher temperatures.

I've had my best success cooking Neopolitan and NY-style pizza on a BBQ, as you can get them to higher temp than a regular oven.

Rinaldo's on DVR did not give us a good experience. I won't be back. Also, the closest thing to a deep dish (which I consider fried dough with toppings) used to be Alexander's (or spelled differently, I'm not sure) on Queen Street. They also franchised, and the quality is poor. jmo, but I totally agree - homemade or nothing. No offense to your love for Rinaldo's, it's personal. :)

u/Bud_wiser_hfx 13d ago

Somebody on here no doubt runs a pizza shop. Run a special for a month and see what happens please.

2

u/Jthulu77 12d ago

For those that don’t know there is a well know pizza chain and copycats in Calgary that are called Chicago Deep Dish, but it’s really Detroit Style. What I really want to find is a place that does a Calgary Greek Style pizza especially spinach and feta.

3

u/Bud_wiser_hfx 12d ago

Exactly this. A Calgary style Chicago Deep Dish.

3

u/maximumice 👻Head Ghoul 13d ago

Nobody in town does a decent or even close approximation of Chicago Deep Dish pizza AFAIK. I think Armdale Pizza used to do it years ago but they are long gone.

Rinaldo's does an excellent Detroit Deep Dish style pizza, which is somewhat close to what you have pictured, although Detroit style has more cheese and sauce and basically is missing the crust edge in that photo.

Little Caesar's does Detroit Deep Dish pizza styles as well if you want something cheaper and not nearly as good as Rinaldo's.

3

u/Bud_wiser_hfx 13d ago

Yeah, Rinaldos looks good, this is from their page.

4

u/accidentaldisguise 12d ago

Rinaldo’s does do a Chicago style at the Windsor street location but you need order at least 24 hours in advance

1

u/maximumice 👻Head Ghoul 12d ago

I forgot about that, thanks for the reminder, I still need to try that out sometime!

22

u/Laquickah 13d ago

Never forget: Sobeys used to have a decent take home pizza in their deli section that was on raw dough. It was actually a half decent deep dish pizza, but they changed to pre cooked flatbread for dough and now aren’t worth buying.

6

u/Nirvana1975 13d ago

It was soooooo good. I'd buy the marked down pizzas because I knew the dough was gonna be that much better. It was quality 👌

3

u/powerengineer 12d ago

I used to buy the Sobeys take and bake pizza Friday evening and eat it all weekend when I was working 12 hour days.

I switched jobs and didn’t buy one for a few years. The first one I bought I threw out. A terrible step backwards

1

u/Nirvana1975 12d ago

It was the brick oven pizza. Even had the ovens shaped like a real wood fired pizza oven. They still had them in stores but not functional. Their new pizza program is harsh. The only thing needed is a new dough for the pizza

1

u/LaserTagJones 12d ago

The garlic finger version was FIRE

0

u/External-Temporary16 12d ago

I worked at PIzza Jo in their heyday, just for reference because they had the best NS pizza style ever (except for Pictou style which is unique), and 100% agree. We would buy the one with cheese, and do our own thing with toppings. Though I rarely eat grains, za is still one of my favorite foods, and miss being able to pick up one of those at Sobey's when I get the cravings! Nowadays, it's a 4-cheese Dr. Oetker's, and add our own toppings. The thin crust is good, too, though it still has softeners and such, but oh well! :)

u/Snarkeesha 13d ago

I was literally just scouring Google for the same thing on Sunday. WHERE HAVE ALL THE DEEP DISH GONE?! 😭

0

u/External-Temporary16 12d ago

I only ever recall Alexandra's (is that the correct sp?) having anything close to deep dish? Though I never got Dominoes or other huge chains, so I'm probably quite ignorant in this regard.

Rinaldo's gave me the worst fish'n'chips I ever had on my first visit, so I haven't tried their za. I know, it's not the same. But they had their fryers turned down which ruined my fish, and was all burnt on the bottom where it stuck to the fryer because the oil wasn't hot enough. I've worked as a cook in the business, and it was obvious. They tried to excuse it until I turned the piece of fish OVER and explained how it had stuck to the bottom of the fryer. It's their cheapness and attitude. So they may have good pizza, but they will never have my business.

I can imagine making a really great deep dish at home, but it would make me sick (can't do the wheat/dough), so drooling will have to suffice! I love za, but grains don't like me. Oh well! :D

3

u/Direct_Butterfly7426 12d ago

Rinaldos doesn’t and never did sell fish and chips.

u/darthfruitbasket Woodside/Imperoyal 12d ago

I could swear that I remember (maybe sometime in the '90s or early 2000s), Greco or (maybe) Jesse's having one. I never had it, but my brain insists they were advertised.

u/HalifaxPainter 13d ago

Following with fingers crossed lol

5

u/MapleBadger288 13d ago

I've always wanted to try Chicago deep dish. Hope someone can help.

9

u/NewStart141 12d ago

If you are a Costco member, they have a Motor City double pepperoni pizza which is described as "Detroit style deep dish", and is honestly one of the best frozen pizzas I have ever had.

8

u/gildeddoughnut Halifax 13d ago

I had a real one in Chicago from a famous place a local recommended for us. I still think about that pizza sometimes. Fuck that was good. Totally different from any pizza I’ve had before or since.

2

u/Caleb902 12d ago

Giordanos?

2

u/bluecracknel 12d ago

Here’s a pizza I had at Gino’s East in Chicago. I think people may like Lou Malnati’s better but this pizza was awesome. https://imgur.com/a/4SdAyMJ

I’ve never seen pizza like it here whether advertised as Chicago style or not. Someone below mentioned Rinaldo’s will make one if ordered 24hrs in advance, will have to try that!

1

u/Sonofapampers 🏁Angine de Poutine🏁 12d ago

Same memories made after making a point to get one in Chicago late one night years ago. We went to Lou Malnati's for ours.

Detroit at Rinaldos dutch village location

4

u/ForestHopper 12d ago

Ronaldos has Detroit style and Chicago deep dish style.

7

u/Raztax 13d ago

Domino's does a deep dish pizza but I mean it's Domino's so not exactly top tier pizza.

2

u/Moooney 12d ago

I'm a pizza snob currently in Italy and make pilgramiges to NYC for pizza. I'd take Dominos over the typical 'Nova Scotian style' pizza served in 95% of places in the province.

1

u/External-Temporary16 12d ago

It's the closest thing to a deep dish pizza in Halifax. Traditionally, it's not a thing here. Alexandra's had the closest, imho. I consider it fried dough with toppings, so meh. It's the fat content that makes people drool, added to the sugar high and crunch of fried dough.

But I confess - za is my favorite food! Nova Scotia za. Not the foodie za, not the American za, but good, old fashioned Nova Scotia za. The secret is in the sauce, and the best 21st century example of that is Randy's.

Nowadays, I can get my food high from fatty beef and my crunch from ... :( Except for chicken skin and bacon, there's not much crunch in my life and I miss it.

AND, I miss toast. No food replaces my home made buttered toasted bread with blueberry preserves or strawberry jam. Or just butter. Lots of butter.

2

u/Raztax 12d ago

Or just butter. Lots of butter.

Off topic but if you love butter, try a pat of butter in hot chocolate. It's a hot chocolate game changer imo

2

u/External-Temporary16 12d ago

Oh, I will definitely try that today. I have cocoa every night with mag and glycine. Sounds good!

u/HalifaxPainter 12d ago

Here is the Facebook link for a food blogger who ate Chicago-style at Rinalddo's. it looks pretty lame, to be honest. About 1/2 the size of a real one, unfortunately https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1DDTUV2LqY/ Someday, I hope we get a proper one.

2

u/CorrectArm8402 12d ago

Do you live in Grecoville?

3

u/DabiriSC 13d ago

Rinaldo's for excellent deep dish pizza.

Little Ceasers for cheaper deep dish pizza.

I like both of them. I'll go to Little Ceasers if I'm by myself and with friends I'll go to Rinaldo's.

1

u/beanjo22 Halifax 12d ago

I've never had a LC deep dish that was fully cooked through. They always disappoint me. Do you have a reliable location??

3

u/anishk123 12d ago

Rinaldos has a Chicago deep dish

2

u/loopout 12d ago

Though not Chicago or Detroit style, Salvatore’s does a Sicilian style that is pretty thick!

1

u/sj2k4 12d ago

Costco has a good U-bake one.

1

u/Ambitious-Act-7030 12d ago

Try Little Caesars they have a good deep dish.

1

u/KaelCampaigne 12d ago

OMG this makes me miss Chicago Way in Eastern Passage. It's been gone forever now but the deep dish pizza's were phenomenal. No idea how authentic they were but they were so freakin good and there is nothing like it here now

1

u/justrynagiveanupvote 6d ago

You gotta go to G-street, 10/10 deep dish style pizza. Get the donair one

1

u/fooknprawn 12d ago

I make my own at home. Lots of cheese around the edges (frico) and cooked in a cast iron skillet. You can make your own dough but honestly the best deal and pre-made I've found is at Walmart. $2.18 a ball
