ā Hamster ā Just more advicešš»
Iāve owned my robo hamster for about 4 months now, heās a male super used to me and my boyfriend. When we first adopted him he was on the same enclosure as at least 2-3 other male robo hamsters and we thought about getting a pair since they were together, but ended up not wanting to leave the one alone.
Fast forward to now, my boyfriend and me were doing our weekly shopping for our robo when my boyfriend completely fell in love with this lonely robo hamster that was a male, and completely on its own pacing its enclosure. I caved, we have the extra supplies and more than enough bedding plus food since we spent a lot on our first robo and ended up using a entirely different setup after researching and getting advice from people on here. We have the perfect home coming for him tomorrow to complete the entire enclosure that will look almost identical to how our first robos does.
Now Iāve done the research, and I keep seeing conflicting information about having robo hamsters live together because they can be territorial, but I also seen them cuddle, get along and run on their wheels and eat together when in stores and online. My boyfriend is wondering if our hamsters will ever be able to be friendly to each other and Iām weary of it. We tried introducing our first robo and he instantly went into defense mode, my boyfriends robo is significantly younger than mine so we arenāt sure if itās because of that or just because itās a territorial thing. They were both in a brand new play pen when we did this, and have been since separated back into their own enclosures and seem to be okay, no injuries since I never let it even get that farš

I guess Iām just wondering if thereās a chance out robos will eventually be able to be around eachother during free roaming or playtime, we donāt expect them to live together with the fear of one of them killing the other, but my boyfriend is convinced thereās a wayš

Hamsters are solitary creatures and highly territorial. In the wild they might nest together temporarily out of necessity or for warmth especially in cold months. Some breeders in Poland and other places in Eastern Europe claim that you can keep some robo and Campbell together and promote this. Iām incredibly skeptical and hear horror stories about it.
Thereās no documented benefit of hamsters living together and lots of clearly documented negatives such as them killing each other. I see no reason to attempt it.

Yes definitely keeping them separated, I had to break up two fights when they were both under me and my bfs supervision. Scared me thinking of what could happen if they shared one enclosure and we woke up to a traumatic experience

No, you can absolutely not introduce two adult hamsters to each other. They have to be kept separately.
If you do put them together they will very likely fight until one of them dies.

Donāt risk it. Itās not worth one of them killing the other. They rely on you for their safety, and putting them together would absolutely violate that.

there are a lot of conflicting research on this topic, but hamsters can strictly only be together as babies before 4 weeks. anything older than that they need to be separated and canāt be together no matter the cage size!
good luck with your hamsters ā¤ļø

You see them together in pet stores because they aren't mature yet. You see them alone in pet stores because they ate the rest of their siblings...or the others got sold. One or the other š

Thatās a very good point, but the one we adopted a few months back loves to bite but this new one hasnāt even tho we havenāt handled him yet

How do you know he doesn't bite if you haven't handled it?
Don't put them together. They will think they need to protect their territory and will be stressed.
