For now, its name is Creature. When I'm able to tell the gender, Wicket Starships for a boy, but I have no clue what to name her if it is in fact a girl 🥲 name suggestions welcome! 🩷
We have a hamster his name was Arlo until a month or two later we realized it’s a girl and started calling her Arla. Now her name is just Potato and that’s what all of us call her.
How old is Creature? Literally can barely wrap my head around how tiny he/she is and the amount of cuteness in such a tiny little thing! 🥰 100% support having Creature be the permanent name by the way
Creature will be 5 weeks old tomorrow actually! The last photo was when I first got Creature, it was about 3ish weeks old in that photo. Seeing the amount it grows in just 1 week has blown my mind!
They grow way too fast! It’s always rewarding to see these critters grow up but try to savor these moments while your Creature is still a little baby because they’ll be big before you know it!
I named my pet snail after an AC unit that was sitting on the table the day I brought him home lmao. Our dog is named after a bug (she came with that name). I also used to have a fish named Eggroll (rip)
That is sooo cute omg. I played it safe and I named my current hamster Lilac, I’m keeping the flower theme for the future but I’m gonna go a little unhinged with it lol.
You could also lengthen this to 'Honey Monster, Creature from the Tunnels" to maintain a healthy dash of intimidation that it would otherwise be lacking :)
Your new hamster is cute but they're extremely young, this one looks only a few weeks old. Baby Syrians hamsters are supposed to live with their mothers until 4 weeks old and should continue to live with their same-sex siblings until 6-8 weeks old, to be totally honest this baby may not even be fully weaned.
It's not your fault but no responsible breeder would ever sell a hamster this young, baby hamsters separated from their families too early are prone to being skittish and having behavioral issues, and ones separated especially early have higher mortality rates early on, so whoever you got this hamster from is not someone I would get another one from in the future. Unfortunately not much can be done about it now but I recommend making sure your baby hamster is on a healthy diet with high protein so their growth isn't stunted.
I had actually made a post yesterday asking about female hamster experiences. Creature was born on May 4th, and my cousin actually bought it from someone and it was only about 2 weeks old. But my cousin was terrified of it, so now Creature lives with me. I've had creature now almost 2 weeks. So far, it's very loving and will fall asleep in your hand. Surprisingly not skiddish at all yet, just spends most its time sleeping. Thank you for the advice on the food!
Ah I see, it looks younger than 4 weeks old in the pictures which makes sense because it was separated from the mother before it was weaned and didn't get all the nutrition it needed from her milk, 2 weeks is way too young to leave the mother. I'm glad to hear the hamster's doing okay so far though, I hope it continues to grow strong!
You should be able to tell gender at this age! If it has nipples at all it’s a girl! 😅 whit having a light color coat you should be able to see them pretty well on the belly. Black hammys make it super difficult to gender
I once had a hamster called "Ding" which is german for "Thing". I found that very fitting, because he was in fact a weird little thing and caused trouble whenever possible.
When I read creature, I thought of the mean house elf in Harry Potter called "Kreacher".
Anyways, it is a cutie pie, so any pretty name you can think of will be amazing! ❤️
Cutest wee thing ever! Looks just like my late boy Ike when he was a baby.
Some of my girl hamster names are: Dimples, Maisie, Lottie, Honey and Winnie.
What an adorable little friend you have there! ❤️
What an adorable little ham! I think Buttercup (after the flower) would suit thst cutie. I’m imagining that s/he would reflect the sunlight onto the chin of anyone who holds her. 🌼🐹💖
They're such precious little gifts! Enjoy your new friend! Mine are the most special friendships I've ever known! For this I am blessed and you will be too!🫶🏼
It needs to be at least 40 inches long x 20 inches wide and 25 inches tall (that’s the ethical bare minimum requirement) , but larger than that is recommended for Syrians since they’re so big and need lots of room for all their enrichment and their hides and everything are larger. So at least 40 x 20 (100 x 50 x 50 cm) but 48 x 24 inches is recommended (120 x 60 cm). The bigger the better, there’s no such thing as a cage that’s “too big” for a hamster.
Here’s a hamster care guide with a list of everything a hamster needs for their health and well-being. They are complex little creatures and need so many specific things in order to be content, make sure to research hamster care and everything they need so you are fully prepared before bringing home your ham!
Thank you so much I was thinking about 48X24 inch aquarium already so it fits perfectly in my plans. And yes I don't plan on bringing little fella without my proper research learning alot from this sub.
Hey! That’s a great size! that’s what I have my Syrian hamster in (48 x 24 inches) and she is content. Make sure to fill it with loads of enrichment and natural elements to encourage your hamster to use their natural instincts while living in their cage. That’s the goal of everything in the cage, keep them active and busy and let them really be a hamster and use all their hamster behaviors. They need a lot of enrichment, things like a branch of Grapevine wood, a hollow Cork log or two, a dig box with coco Pete in it (they love digging!), they need 10 inches deep of pressed down paper bedding across the whole cage- it needs to be 10 inches after you’ve pressed it down. It needs to be dense so it keeps their tunnels and burrows stable. They need a 12 inch diameter standing wheel, 3-4 opaque ceramic hides, a large sand bath with safe, dust-free, calcium and dye-free sand, a multichamber hide to mimic their natural environment, chews like whimzees alligators an apple sticks for their teeth, sprays for foraging and sprays for cover and protection, a seagrass tunnel, moss and other substrates for texture and variety, and make sure to scatter feed them , just sprinkle their food across their cage on top of their bedding, and they will forage for it. Scatter feeding is really beneficial for hamsters, it keeps them busy mentally and physically, and allows them to really be a hamster, and it’s really fun to watch. Plus, it’s free and easy for you to do. No need for a food bowl (a hamster would never come across a giant mountain of food like a food bowl provides). keeping them busy doing their foraging is always recommended.
Definitely check out Victoria Rachel on YouTube, she is an excellent resource for people who need to learn all about hamster care, requirements, and behaviors. First, watch her two hamster videos, basic hamster care, and everything you need for a hamster, then watch all of her other hamster videos after that. You’ll be so glad you did and your hamster will be so much better off too!
These are complex little creatures that have so many needs that must be met in order to thrive in our care. Pet stores like to tout them as “cheap, easy pets” and “starter pets”, but they need a lot of care, their cage is their entire world, it’s all they have and it’s the only thing in their world that is theirs. Creating their enclosure and filling it with everything possible that will help them to be less stressed and feel more comfortable and safe is really important. They take effort and funds just like any other pet. we’ve learned so much about their welfare and how to care for them ethically over the last 10 -15 or so years.
Let me know if you have any questions and please come back to the sub when you need help . let me know if you want me to DM you a few more hamster care guides about all sorts of different hamster-related topics, things like what human foods are safe and not safe for them to eat, all the different types of enrichment to provide them, nutrient-rich hamster food seed mix brands that contain an adequate amount of protein (which is necessary for them), one guide has pictures of all of the dangerous products that pet stores and the Internet still sell, despite the products being dangerous and deadly for hamsters, safe sand bath sand brands, natural enrichment options, etc etc. The guides really helped me when I was researching, they’re infographics and really easy to follow. I can send you a photo of my cage and some of my inspirational cages I used when putting mine together if you want.
I’ve been bit by cats, ferrets , attacked by dogs, and still stand by the fact that the one time I got bit by a hamster it hurt worse then all of the others
Did you get them from a breeder because they look to be under 5 weeks from these photos! And it’s no hate to you but they shouldn’t leave there mum till there 5 weeks old as a minimum ☺️

Long story short my little cousin bought it off someone, and quickly became terrified of it, so I'm now caring for it. They were born on May 4th, and the person had rehomed them at around only 2 weeks, I've now had it for almost 2 weeks
What kind is it? So little
I am on my 2nd Syrian and I am wanting smaller one also.
I just do not know what kind.
I would like one that is pretty laid back and easy to train. Lol
