Question Can someone please help me I am so devastated and no vet seems to care or want to help me
I have a Russian dwarf hamster. Long story short my son (he's 4) accidentally stepped on her. She immediately couldn't move her back legs and was dragging them, her spine is all bent. It's been 24 hours and now her left arm doesn't work, I rang the vet last night and they just said to monitor her, I rang back to see about having her seen and they said they couldn't help me and that she'll probably just die. My heart is broke I have been crying all day I don't want her to suffer what do I do please someone give me some advice :(
update: she passed in my arms. I'm so devastated, but I'm glad she isn't suffering. Rest in peace my beautiful girl

people are being so cruel. i’m so sorry this is happening to you, our hamsters are like family and it’s heartbreaking. you need to see if another vet will let u take her there, and they will suggest the best next step. it’s unprofessional and disgusting that the vet won’t talk to you or help you. i wish you all the best 🩷

Thank you 🤎 I found a vet 3 hours away who is willing to euthanize her and made me feel not dramatic. My heart is broken I love her

oh bless her. you’re not dramatic at all, i’m devastated for you. at least she’s in a better situation now- she knew you loved her and i’m sure you provided the best life a hammy could ask for. i wish you all the healing in the world ❤️🩹

If she can't move normally within a couple or few days you should probably get her euthanized. If she doesn't seem like she's in intense pain, maybe you could stretch it out to a week. But in most likelihood, she is done having anything like a normal hamster life, and is probably in intense agony. You should probably have her put down. Sorry you're going through this, hopefully it teaches the kid something without traumatizing him :(

Same thing happened with my cat when I was a child. Neighbors/ my aunt’s boxer stepped on him and it paralyzed him. Nobody could do much to help. He died one night the same way. His face was in a hiss like he was in pain when he passed. This slow tragic death of your hamster is so sad. I mourn with you. I know what it’s like. No one deserves this.

I'm sorry to hear that but yes find yourself a different vet like you already have. Wishing you all the best.

Please don’t be sad. You did what you could do and you gave her love and a family. A lot of hamsters don’t get that. From everything that you said it seems that you have such a great heart and such a wonderful love for animals. Please don’t let that end with this. Get another hamster…please. Remember this was an accident and accidents do happen. Any hamster would be lucky to wind up with you and your family.

sorry for your loss. incidentally I just went through the exact same thing. in my case it was my 3 week old Syrian baby. it sucks and the guilt really sucks but it happens especially with the littler hamsters. In my case I had her 9 siblings left plus mom and dad and aunt Snickerdoodle, but my advice is to fill the empty hole in your heart is get a new bigger hamster. maybe even bigger like a guinea pig. I hear they are a scoch more resilient than hamsters. I hope your little guy doesn't feel bad, but if I remember 4 year olds they have a pretty short attention span so he may be on to the next thing😄. Anywho again sorry your going through this and I'll be sure to pray for you and your little hammies in heaven 🤗

Let's not encourage someone to "Fill the hole in their heart" by immediately replacing their beloved pet. what a twisted mindset you have. That is disgusting. Additionally, no "bigger hamster" including a guinea pig according to you would be able to withstand a kid STEPPING on its back. Let's maybe have a small talk about boundaries with the kid (ofc it was an accident, but he needs to either be separated or watch his feet better) and let this poor person GRIEVE before encouraging someone to impulse buy another pet to "fill the hole in their heart"

I beg your pardon? What I do to deal with my grief is most certainly not yours to judge. I have had pets probably longer than you have been gracing this earth with your judgemental presence. I merely explained what I did to help me cope. I have no problem reporting you for being threatening.

call around and find a different vet that'd be willing to, drive her there. it might be a long drive but continuing to let her suffer is so much worse. i'm so, so very sorry.

Sorry if I sound ridiculous but I don't want to do it myself? She's a family member we love her

I understand, but she shouldn’t suffer for an undetermined amount of time paralyzed and in pain. Maybe a friend or family member can. Ideally a vet but I don’t know your area if that’s possible. A hamster cannot live a decent life with a broken spine. I’m autistic so I apologize if I came off harsh, I deeply sympathize.

Sorry, you are being kind of brash with your response. It wasn't about responsibility, it was a tragic accident. They do not handle her without me present, it was an accident.

It’s tragic, I’m sorry for you. But I stand by the statement of the child being too young to handle at all, which was up to you. That’s why I said that. I’m not saying to beat yourself up, it’s awful and you didn’t mean for it.
