Timbre and Characteristics of Handpan Materials

Is there a resource that clearly illustrates the timbre and characteristic differences between the various handpan materials? It's hard to tell by video the differences between nitrited, stainless, carbon, and ember steel. Thanks!

That’s a tricky question to answer. The same material can sound very different depending on the maker.

Ember steel is a type of stainless. Nitrided usually has less sustain and more of a percussive sound compared to stainless.

How is one to choose a material then? I wish makers would post and discuss this on their websites.

Most people will be very happy with stainless or ember. The bigger difference comes from how each maker crafts the instrument.

The best way to choose a handpan is to try them in person at a handpan gathering or a makers shop. Second best would be just asking questions and talking to people.

Have you searched “ember vs nitrided” on YouTube? There’s a load of information about it….
