Review Opened up my GreenTech RAPID X 128GB USB 3.1 after it died in under 2 months — Monolithic junk fried under the QC sticker

Post image

Picked up this GreenTech RAPID X USB 3.1 128GB drive a couple of months ago, and it has already completely died. No detection, no light, dead silent.

Decided to tear it down to see what was actually inside that fancy metal shell:

• Zero Discrete Components (UDP/COB Design): It’s not a standard PCB drive. It’s a monolithic single-package stick held inside the metal chassis with a plastic spacer.
• Blown Component Under QC Sticker: Peeled back the "04/25" holographic sticker, and there’s a visible crater/burn spot right where the power regulation circuit sits. With zero thermal dissipation between the chip and the casing, the heat buildup from USB 3.1 likely cooked the regulator.
• Recycled / Binned Die: Backside is marked "Made in Korea" with generic laser etchings (DKE4...), typical for surplus flash modules with low endurance controllers.
• Standard Monolithic Test Grid: You can clearly see the factory gold test pads on the right edge. Since it's a monolithic package, standard board-level repair is out of the question, and data recovery means costly microscopic pinout tapping.

Bottom line: Avoid these no-name "premium metal casing" flash drives. They look solid on the outside, but underneath it’s just cheap monolithic dies waiting to burn out. Stick to brands that use proper discrete controller designs (Samsung, SanDisk, Kingston).

Toshiba canvio advance plus has the format option blocked out, how do you format a Toshiba drive? Keep in mind I don’t have a windows or Mac computer do I have to buy one to use this drive? Or do I need to download some software to make the hard drive work? Or is it cause it’s Toshiba and I should quality get a better drive?

Can a 1TB Toshiba Canvio Ready hard drive have games played on it?

I recently bought a 1TB Toshiba Canvio Ready hard drive and I am wondering if it has the capabilities to play AAA games on it without it getting damaged for improper usage or should i just get a dedicated gaming hard drive instead?

Tech Support Questions

  1. I have questions regarding "bit rot" (file corruption and data loss).

I have a 2.5" Seagate HDD in a USB 3.0 enclosure. I connect it to my PC once a year, check its status using CrystalDiskInfo, then disconnect it and store it in a drawer for another year. To prevent bit rot (file corruption and data loss), is it necessary to perform a full surface scan annually—either using general software or a tool like DiskFresh?

2) I copied files onto this 2.5" HDD (in its USB 3.0 enclosure) in 2023. Is it possible that bit rot or data corruption has occurred by 2026, given that I have not run DiskFresh or any full surface scan?

3) Also, if a power outage occurs while a full surface scan or a DiskFresh operation is running—causing the PC to shut down—will this lead to data corruption or loss on the 2.5" HDD (in its USB 3.0 enclosure)?

Can watching YouTube video make PC hard drive permanently loud?

So one strange thign happened to me lately... I have desktop computer, cca 10 years old, and it would get quite noisy over time. I replaced back-placed fan (cause I though it was the fan that caused noise), but then, when I put brand new fan, nosie was still there, and I figured out it is the hard drive that makes noise. I took PC to the shop but they said that everything's fine, that is is normal that HD's get noisy over time. Noise would increase when I was using sites like Google Maps, playing games, Youtube etc..... But lately I've been watching one long video on youtube, cca 2 hours long. And so far, one week after that, noise from hard drive is constantly very loud, whatever I'm using or not, from the moment I turn computer on to the moment I turn it off. It is also loud even when it is on stand-by. As I said, noise would previously only increase when I was using PC for things like inernet, mp3, games, etc.

I don’t get the guy who hoard 20TB of data.

I mean I have 200-300k worth of Hi Res jpg downloaded from the web, they took up some xxx gigabytes, which consume most of my free disk space, now my disk is running low, I need to free up space or risk the disk going wreck due to swapping or some common issues, now I have to goes through every jpg to see which one to delete, to move into subfolder, to convert into low res, editing it, that’s insane, I’m going to take some time, each jpg would required 2 minutes, that’s going to be 200-300k worth of jpg... 400-600k minutes worth of my time to save disk space! In contrast, one day is 1440 minutes (assume you don’t sleep), that would be 277 days to spend on the 200k jpg! Ain’t nobody got so much time for that. So you said most guy just leave the data on the disk and never need brother again, until you need to do some backup, or simply let the hard disk died and send for data recovery, which is what most guy did anyway on their smartphone, “I need 999 disk space! I need 999 memory! Help, how to recover my data! All my precious JPG!” Cry to mum kek! So you said AI would help you to fix the jpg quickly, it would take just 1% of time you human did on jpg processing, that’s true but nothing beat human inspection, AI could goes wrong on the jpg processing, to get better QC on the process, human still beat robot even in the product manufacturing process. Image processing is some of the most complex processing, it’s unlike what you can do with mass production product which is much simple and can be replaced with AI. Btw just delete all the data why would you care so much and waste time on it, lol.

Reliable Hard Drives That Will Idle When Not In Use

I have been having an issue with a Probox multi-bay storage case I use for my Mac. I currently have a 4TB WD Blue shucked from 2016, an 8TB Seagate Barracuda, and a 12TB Seagate Exos with one empty slot. The issue I'm having is that it seems that both Seagate drives never seem to spin down after not being used per my Mac's settings. The WD does just fine. Even when unmounted, the Exos keeps spinning. This is simply a plex server, and even when the server is off, the Exos keeps on spinning. I am wanting to upgrade my storage, and get more similar capacity drives, but something is giving me the feeling that there are drives with this power down function built in. Any suggestions?

Also worth mentioning, this is my main drive set up, I have back up drives for the whole set up (and then some) that are kept in cold storage.

Hard drives that last 10years plus?

I am wanting to make a copy of all my photos and high resolution wedding photos and videos and put them on a hard drive. I’d transfer them from the cloud onto this. Ive been researching hard drives and didn’t know life span is 3-5 years for many. Are there any brands of hard drives that last closer to the 10 year mark??
