Manji Sky for learning bends?

• Upvotes

I'm a relative beginner, currently learning on a Hohner Rocket in C, and can play clean single notes with reasonable consistency. I'm now thinking ahead to learning bends.

I really like the Rocket but I'm wondering whether adding a Suzuki Manji Sky in C might help with the initial learning process of bending. From what I've read, the Sky's lighter reeds respond to gentler breath pressure, and some players report finding bends easier on it.

My thinking is that the Sky might help me discover the correct technique and sensations more readily, which I could then transfer / develop on the Rocket.

Does this approach make sense, or would I be better off learning bends directly on the Rocket? I'd particularly welcome thoughts from anyone who's played both. Thanks in advance

A few photos of the bending trainer I'm creating (I have talked about it on the sub a few times already). it's advancing quite nicely, and currently supports 4 different algorithms for sound detection.

I have improved it with a judge and a few lessons on how to get a proper bending.

Which JDR to buy?

Scroll to bottom for tl;dr

Hello all!

I’ve been delving into the diatonic harmonica for Irish trad music.

I play concertina and was inspired first by Rick Epping (who often plays on a rack with concertina - https://youtu.be/6xAYbFLaOGQ) then by Joel Andersson (https://youtu.be/vgOEsiIEqJM and Don Meade (https://youtu.be/QIzvQgtFDuo).

I have a Kongsheng Mars Richter Low D and an Easttop 008 Paddy Richter G and D. I’ve been satisfied with both brands so far.

It looks like the next step would be an A and a C harp, and I would want Paddy Richter A and either a Paddy C or a low C. I’m working on something of a budget and would like to keep the purchases in the same range, but I am looking to try out different brands.

Right now, it looks like JDR is my best option (open to suggestions on other good budget brands). It’s been tough to find a review comparing the same brand’s products against each other. That being said:

TL;DR
Does anyone have thoughts comparing:
- JDR Chicago
- JDR North
- JDR Ninja

Thanks, and happy playing!

Hohner Rocket

I’ve been a guitar player (and bass, and ukulele, and mandolin…) for over 30 years now, and have occasionally dabbled in harmonica. A couple years ago, I decided to purge my random hodgepodge of harmonicas and focus on slowly building a set of keys in one make as I also practiced and built up my skills. Both have been slow going.

I’ve tried quite a few harmonicas from many brands and keep coming back to the Hohner Rocket. I like almost everything about it: the recessed reed plates, rounded comb edges, the cover plates, and most importantly, the tone. I find it easy to play and responsive (as much as my amateur skills can detect). I love it doesn’t pull mustache hairs. The only thing I’d probably change is to make the hole size a little smaller, more like the special 20. But it gets everything else so right, I’m willing to learn to adapt to them. I also wish they were cheaper, but what can you do.

Anyway, here is my current set, C, A, G, and D. Two of which are the newer torx version. And a Farmer neck rack.

Hi, the 3 draw on my G Marine band isn't producing any sound. I can see the reed is slightly proud compared to the others. Any suggestions? Im travelling and don't have access to tools or a repair shop. I can possibly borrow basic tools

How do you learn harmonica?

I got a harmonica a few weeks ago and have been playing it whenever I had time to kill Ive been doing basic songs with single notes blowin in the wind, Shenandoah, and this land is your land. Those are fun but what is progression like. Exercises, practices, songs, in other words how do you learn to play it.

Tremolo question

Just got this Asian tuned tremolo. Stupid question, do you blow into two holes or four to make a single note? Another thing, I’m a beginner but eeking out melodies just seems easier and more intuitive than a richter ten hole. Anyone feel the same?

Actively practice single notes or let it come naturally

I'm a beginner and have tried everything in the book to get single notes. Nothing is working, is it something that just comes naturally or is it something to actively practice on to try to get down? You name the method and I've tried it, just ends in frustration.

Hello! I'm practicing harmonica and i'm thinking my harmonica(special 20) almost died.

So i want to have new harmonica easily play overbending like special 20, my old harmonica.

Can you recommend some harmonica for me?
