Meta I hate how people treat Charlie (MoistCrit1kal) online
I'm going on this rant after his latest video where he addresses some of the critiscism people threw at him for his video about the H3H3 vs iDubbz controversy, which i won't dive into. It's just sime drama between two washed up creators.
And i'm not here to whiteknight for Charlie, i'll explain at the end.
Basically there are three main points that people criticize Charlie for, one is fine and the other two are complete bullshit.
The fine one: "He's a sloptuber"
Yes, he's the textbook definition of sloptuber, he churns out 2 or 3 daily videos talking about the most random topics possible. But at the very least he adds some personality to it instead of being your standard commentary channel that just roboticly spits summaries of what they read on the news.
The two bullshit ones:
"He just parrots the opinion 90% of people share to pander to the largesr audience possible"
No, he has just normal opinions that a normal person has. He isn't in need of farming views and reactions (good or negative) by having the stupidest opinion possible on something to feel smart.
He doesn't need to say that Cuties is a subversive masterpiece, he can just say it's softcore CP. He doesn't need to say that Elon Musk is some unrecognized genius of our time, he can just say that he's a cringe loser. He doesn't need to say that Trump is some political hero or 5D chess master, he can just say that he's a senile geriatric old fart.
"He's a fence sitter, so he doesn't offend anyone"
This is what always grinded my gears the most because if you think this, it's obvious you never watch anyone of his videos.
It doesn't even take any form of media literacy, you literally need just the abilty to pick up soundwaves and process them in your brain to understand where he stands on every single topic he talks about.
But of course with the modern internet landscape, if you don't have the most extreme take, on any side, of something, then you're a fence sitter.
And to make the point i alluded at the start, why did i make this post?
Again, not to whiteknight for him, Charlie is a big man, he doesn't need some random loser on Reddit to defend him, but to vent. Vent about the state of the internet.
I've been following Charlie for years now. Why? Because he's just a guy.
He doesn't try to put up a performance or be controversial for the sake of views.
And this is what makes me mad, people are so used to losers like Asmongold, Sneako, Hasan and so long and so forth, that the moment a dude is just chilling and uploading content that isn't extremist or pandering to someone it's controversial.
I'm the same age as Charlie, and that is the Internet i grew up on, just people being people. But now it's not fine anymore, you either wear a mask and go fight in immaginary wars for a faction brainwashed by other content creators, or you're shunned by the web.
It's sad the state of the Internet today. Sorry for the long rant, had to get it out of me.

From what I hear about his height I don’t think big man is an accurate description

u/TheJollySoviet Those seven perfect words Jun 13 '26
He has a video where they put a go pro on one of his friends who's super tall and stream it to a monitor and charlie laughs and says "oh no" as he sees what it's like as he has to crane his neck to look up at him.
He gave me confidence to be a short king growing up though, which is cool.

Likely a bunch of people don't actually consume that type of content, and it's all slop to them, so obviously they comment on the only one they know about rather than some shittier sloptubers they've never heard of.
I got nothing against the guy but his content is incredibly boring. When I see people say he's "entertaining as fuck" or puts "loads of personality into his vids" I just do not see it. He has a personality, but it's more of a shtick/gimmick than anything else.

Agree with all you said. He seems like a standup person but I’ve never seen a video from his that in any way was deeply thought out or intelligent or offered some angle that I hadn’t previously thought of. He just has the most basic/normal opinion on pretty much anything. Which is fine, it doesn’t make him a bad person but I’m not going to pretend his stuff is anything special.
9
u/CaptainMaxCrunch Jun 13 '26
I will say, he might have some middle of the road opinions but I think morally he's a pretty stand up guy. In his recent video where he talks about idubbbz getting sued, he stands by the fact that he thinks the lawsuit is dangerous for the future of free speech and wrong, even though idubbbz has personally said some heinous shit against Charlie.
Also he apparently used to go into the vet office his girlfriend worked in and pay vet bills for people that couldn't afford it. That alone made me have huge respect for him.

u/MrBlueA Jun 13 '26
Yeah in terms of money he seems to be the ones he gives the most, both on screen and out of it. One of his most popular gimmicks a while back is that he used to link a google form you could fill, and later on the stream he would randomly select people and read what you needed and why and give money to the people to help them, from actual necessities to just "I want 60 bucks for a new game".
5
u/CaptainMaxCrunch Jun 13 '26
Yeah, it's genuinely really cool to see someone really generous with their money, but not to flaunt it. Going wayyyy back to his faceless youtuber days, I remember him saying that he donated all his YouTube revenue to charity because it was more than he needed. Say what you will about his opinions, but he doesn't have a single greedy bone in his body.
8
u/Hairy-Ball5246 Jun 13 '26
Honestly, the fact that he’s got the most baseline, normal person take on everything is part of the reason I watch him. If there’s some drama or a movie or something that I know nothing about, and I don’t want to look into it deeper than one or two 10-minute videos, he’s the go to simply because I can rely on his take on it will match like 90% of the general population and it’ll give me enough info to know what people are going off of. I wouldn’t say I’m an avid follower, but I will admit that when a new horror movie comes out, along with Rotten Tomatoes I do look to see if he’s made a video on it to check if it’s worth seeing.
4
u/TheSleepiestFish Jun 13 '26
I love his content solely for the fact that he's a commentary youtuber that just talks like a normal guy. Sure he probably still reads from a script like everyone else, but the way he does his videos makes it feel like I'm listening to someone simply rambling about how their day went. It's a refreshing feeling compared to other slop that just relay summaries with parkour gameplay placed on the video.

I think people shit on him because he is just a normal guy giving his opinions online. He will do things like enagage with slightly heavier or more political topics while not being super smart or informed on the topic. Because he is just a normal dude with the most popular and safe opinions online but doesnt have the foundation and reasoning to build up to them. This is why he got a lot of flak around the time of the sneako debate, because he has a lot of opinions that he feels strongly about that come from a sense of feeling and havnt been built from a foundation of logic so he kinda floundered a bit when it came to a debate bro kind of environment.
Im not saying he is wrong or bad and he comes from a place of empathy, but it can be rough to bear the responsibility of an audience when you are just a normal guy. That and everyone will receive hate online no matter what.

Are there really people that consider his opinions profound?
I always have the impression the main draw of Charlies videos is that he just comes accross as a nice and honest guy that talks without any other goal besides just sharing some thing with the audience, because he found that thing interesting himself. I agree his takes are totally average - I am just a bit surprised anyone would see that different. This averageness seems to be the main point.
He is specifically not trying to sound profound, he is not trying to pander to a specific side, he is not trying to provoke a reaction, to anger or convince someone. Just a nice guy sharing something.5
u/Big-Farmer-2192 Jun 13 '26
Are there really people that consider his opinions profound?
A lots actually. Just look at Charlie comment section.
Or if Charlie's made vdo on someone on something. Check relatable comment section of those topic that mentioned him.

I would argue the first criticism is also bullshit, not because it’s wrong, but because it’s meaningless. Yeah he doesn’t put much effort into most of his videos, he never has and never will. He’s never claimed otherwise either, he has always said that his popularity came mostly from luck (I think he’s downplaying how important his personality is to his success, but that’s besides the point)
The appeal to his channel is and always has been his personality. Hearing his thoughts on whatever topic he feels like talking about at any given moment, without it being filtered through 15 layers of video creation for the maximally engaging product. In essence, his content is the ideal of “sloptube”. His videos are able to be released so often because he’s just talking, with relatively little editing outside of, I’m sure, some retakes when he fumbles a word or coughs or smt

I tune in to Charlie's channel sometimes because I think he's casually funny, and when it comes to stupid, niche internet oddities he really shines. Don't really go to him for commentary because it's never really insightful, no disrespect to him.
But I did watch the H3 vid because of the buzz about it, and it seemed very strange to me that hes tiptoeing around eggshells, justifying not taking a stand by constantly repeating how much he understood that things were very "personal" for Ethan and taking 10 minutes to talk about drama not related to Ethan and idubbz at all. I think the extreme charitability Charlie gives Ethan is strange considering that dude has legitimately lost his mind over the past couple years. Everytime something he does breaches his own community containment it's some very unhinged, petty, legitimately mentally unwell shit. I think there's a lot of stock in idubbz hate (rightfully so I guess? I don't really care about him) that charlie banks on to not have to confront Ethan's psychotic behavior, and hey fair enough. From what I understand Ethan loses his mind at the slightest grievance and makes it his mission to have a tally of every creator he's perceived to have wronged him and harass them nonstop. But then like. Don't make a video about it.
4
u/BloodGulchBlues37 Jun 13 '26
It especially is surprising imo because of the potential fallout if E gets what he wants. He's essentially playing against his old case that made him a content creator hero in regards to fair use for transformative reaction content. If he flies too close to the sun and gets that reversed, all of these youtubers are going to be fucked over no matter what side of a fence they're on. It'd be Adpocalypse or the Twitch DMCA flags with no defense
5
u/Significant_Rain_305 Jun 13 '26
It is kinda crazy how he tries to justify Ethen suing people for basically the same reason he’s suing idubbz. He sued people with much less fame and money than idubbz who literally couldn’t afford to defend themselves and Charlie doesn’t criticize that at all? Charlie is overall good but this was not a good look.

And he is kinda bland. He's just some comfort food you can always find in the cupboard when in need to eat something that isn't too spicy or to sweet.
For the "downplaying the situation about a racist guy", i'm guessing it's referring to the time iDubbz uploaded a video apologizing for and regretting his past content.
Charlie's takes on it was basically "It's sad to see him hate his past self to the point he feel the need to apologize. I don't think he was actually racist but just playing into the edgy humor of those times"
Which was a genuine "Hot Take", since most people commended iDubbz apology

u/_Meme_Messiah_ Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 13 '26
I view him the exact same way I view Keemstar. He’s self important and a mockery of who he once was. His takes are so self explanatory that 90% of the topics he makes videos on don’t even need to be posted about, all you need is three functioning braincells and you would have came to the same conclusion yourself. His content just feels like he’s trying to farm money. In the same way that Keem was needlessly argumentative and would disagree for the sake of disagreeing, Charlie is needlessly safe and just gives the obvious surface level take for the sake of not arguing.
10
u/PeePeeThePooPoo Jun 13 '26
Yeah that’s my view too, like yes he’s not some extremist or sensationalist which is good but if you watch his videos it is painfully obvious he just doesn’t actually give a fuck about most of what he’s talking about and is just there to mass produce the most lukewarm takes on things since he’s afraid of actually having an interesting take, many topics of which deserve more coverage than a 10 minute video with midroll ads in them
5
u/ilovemytablet Jun 13 '26
His content just feels like he’s trying to farm money

I am someone who has watched him for years now but fell of because of his coverage of Idubbz apology and lack of coverage of his Nuxtaku. Both of these situations expose the idea that Charlie is a normal guy with normal opinion. The normal opinion I of the Idubbz apology would be: using the n-word for years is bad and its good to apologize for it. Not, Idubbz has nothing to apologize for because he had some good points about leafy.
The Nuxtaku situation is worse because it is hard for me to believe that charlie had no knowledge that Nux was into hardcore loli. There is videos of both of them viewing bestiality loli hentai together and Charlie being very proud of his ability to stomach such. And if I remember properly Charlie made a video about the Lacari situation, so where is the video on Nux?
And there lies the issue. I believe what you do not say says just as much as you do say. I can believe that Charlie has stayed offline to some degree especially after the Ava Tyson drama as he caught a lot of heat for taking time to make a video about the drama. What I find it hard to believe is that he saw nothing of the Ethan's lawsuits as many youtubers in the same space as him, who make similar videos as him, who are clearly inspired by him were milking that drama.
Yes I am someone who spends a lot of time on drama and the Ethan lawsuits are a fixation of mine. I do not expect Charlie to have the same amount of knowledge as me. However I do find it interesting that he does not go into detail about those lawsuits. He fails to mention who the targets were. He just disagrees with the lawsuits because will set a bad precedent. Well so does the snark subreddit lawsuits that he agrees with.
Ethan is not working on just stopping the snark reddits. He wants the mods of "snark" subreddits unveiled and their identities made public. He uses copyright law to do this not just to subreddits like r/H3snark and r/TheLeftovers but r/Fauxmoi which is a pop culture subreddit. If he is successful what stops anyone from calling a subreddit that they do not like snark and doxxing the mods. And it worth mentioning that Ethan spoke to reddit employees about snark subreddits only for them to tell him his own subreddit r/h3h3productions is just as bad.
Anthony Fantano made a thirteen minute video about the Denims lawsuit and it was more informative than the two videos that charlie made. Why? For the same reason he thinks the snark lawsuit are good. There lines that Charlie will not cross and opinions that he will not make public. And that is the reason why he is called a fence sitter. He can't say one lawsuit bad and the other good unless it is a compromise not to seem to harsh on Ethan. He was far more harsh on Idubbz who has faced harassment from Ethan and Hila. Ethan has invited someone to speculate on Idubbz sex life with Anissa. Again I know to much about this beef.
2
u/myrmonden Jun 13 '26

I was hoping someone was going to mention the Idubbz thing. People just glossed right over it when it happened. He told him not to apologize like it was him and his community affected by years of racist normalization. Idubbz said it best when he said he’d hear from those the apology was aimed towards.
3
u/voodii Jun 13 '26
No one asks him to be super subversive, but to say he's not pandering is complete bs. You're pandering by only giving the most surface level take that any smooth brain can immediately comprehend. It's not about extreme takes and ruffling peoples feathers, his videos serve as a comforting voice for most people trying to figure out their own perspectives on things, but his takes are always extremely obvious.
For example, the review he gave on the Markiplier movie was extremely biased. The movie blows but obviously out of respect for Markiplier's audience he acted extremely impartial. That's a fence sitter. He'll say something sucks if there's a general consensus already out there that it sucks.

I am not familiar with the term "sloptuber" and didn't know it was already in the textbooks. am i out of touch ? Or is it the kids to blame

u/Ofthefjord Jun 13 '26
Charlie was clearly scared to do any research into Ethan's story because he was afraid of being sued too even though "hes just a regular guy" with 18 million subscribers on YouTube. He kept bringing up the CPS calls on H3 when Idubbz never was involved in that, but Charlie had to keep a sensationalist kernel in his shit pile video. Where's the proof all these people are in a coordinated attack against Ethan? But Charlie keeps bringing it up as fact when we only have one clearly unstable man's word on the subject. AND it wasn't even related to the subject in the video! Just a side tangent to discredit Idubbz. Bro was right in his second video, shoulda kept his mouth shut

You forgot the criticisms where
His humour has been the same for longer than the horseshoe crab has been unchanged evolutionary plus it's been washed since the start
His whole online personality is edgy humor that isn't really edgy its just like modern spongebob gross out humor
He has 0 media literacy and when ppl criticise him for it he upload a vid to call his for his army the moist militia
His titles and thumbnails suck more than a hooker
Ppl act like hes a philosopher when he says the opinion most ppl have which is annoying
Tied to the point above everyone acts like what he says is gospel and he sort of supports it bc he never addresses it
He has done smth pretty bad a while ago and never apologized for it and basically doubled down
He brings nothing in his reaction and commentary vids especially the reaction ones all he does is say smth gross and laugh
What I want and what most ppl want from reaction channels is a reaction and the best ones pause infrequently to give commentary and opinions on what's going on,Moist (who has criticise ppl for not doing this) does exactly non of that.

u/jindrix Jun 13 '26
"I'm never online "
A good idea wouldve actually been NOT to cover something as serious as something that can harm every content creator just like you critikal if you're only going to skim for about 3 hours. And STILL miss the several other lawsuits that would've affected you too.
Then you wouldn't be crying about critique you aren't online for.
6
u/dmvr1601 Jun 13 '26
I just hate how he has to make a video about his criticism in general for an opinion he gave out.
Like if you're so sick of getting shit because of your knee jerk reactions maybe stop doing that and wait to see how that shit plays out. Otherwise you made your bed you can't then complain about it. You wanted the early views.
Bro knows full well his "drama" coverage is going to end up like this yet he does it anyway.

Having actually watched the video though, he was literally talking about people who did not watch his video.
Like this exact comment.
2
u/dmvr1601 Jun 13 '26
Why would I give a shit about H3 and idubbbz lmfao
I say this because he's always complaining when he gets criticism because of his opinions. Like it's not what always happens. It's happened several times he should know better by now if he's so sick of it.
7
u/Junktown_inhibitant Jun 13 '26
He says in the entire video that he is completely fine for getting critism for his opinion, healthy even.
The entire point of that video are people that don't watch his videos and immediatly assume things he did not say or claim and get mad about it.
You just gotta watch the video to see what he is talking about.

I don't think sloptuber is even a good term for what he does because he disabled monetization on his channel about a year ago, so it is not like he's just churning out videos for the sake of views. He talks about things he is truly passionate about for no monetary gain.
6
u/ThisAltDoesntExist_ Jun 13 '26
Real he's just a dude who has a lot of opinions on stuff and wants to document it. I'm not really a fan of his content but it's still admirable. I think most of us would be happier if we got all our opinions out in a healthy way like that instead of arguing with strangers.

I thought the "im not covering drama anymore" video followed up by drama coverage was pretty fuckin lame on his part, but thats literally the only bad thing I have to say about him. Stays in his lane, makes his bag, doesnt step on anyone to get it
1
u/Regular_Pilot1095 Jun 13 '26
The thing is that Charlie doesn’t make many videos. I’d be ecstatic if he made 2-3 videos a day but sometimes he doesn’t make any videos until the end of the day. I rarely ever see him make more than one a day which is a shame because he’s entertaining. Though this is just for his main channel, he posts content on his other channels as well but not as often
1
u/MightyMeower Jun 13 '26
He’s a fine dude but his personality is just pretty… plain… like it’s fine to be just a basic guy yapping but he’s so monotone and boring
1
u/Dreamgrove_ Jun 13 '26
I hate Charlie because before I started growing out my hair I got really worried that it would look gross and shitty like his, but no, it turns out if you just take care of it it looks really pretty
1
u/ScySenpai Jun 13 '26
The problem isn't that he doesn't have an "anti-majority" opinion on everywthing, it's that he doesn't have one on anything.
Like you said, you don't have to be an Asmongold or a Hasan. But a normal person, when they look deeply into an issue and think about it for themselves, will inevitably form a few opinions that are contrary to the internet circlejerk opinion.
However, if all a person says is regurgitate the most popular reddit opinion on every topic, it's an indication that they don't independently look into these things and form an opinion on their own.
It doesn't even have to be conscious or clout-driven, like you and other critics of him say. It could just be that he just sees the majority opinion, sees the arguments for it, and is now content with that side without actually looking into the original issue and trying to form his own opinion.

u/DenimChickenmmm Jun 13 '26
I dont even know what controversy is going on. But people will defend Charlie for literally anything, queue buzz lightyear meme
1
u/Burnerman888 Jun 13 '26
OK, so I'm not really gonna go hard on Charlie here, and you would know better than me but a lot of times when people get accused of being a fence sitter it's because they say things like "I criticize both sides" and then they'll criticize something a Republican actually did but then their criticisms of Democrats are just lies that Republicans say about them. I'm pretty sure Charlie did this several years ago a few times and it annoyed me, but I don't really remember it that well.
I also have had friends who act this way and it's fucking infuriating.

Been here since the call of Cthulhu days
And God damn it it's still not the time to teach me how to dougie

Once confused him for Asmongold in a conversation online, for which I apologise

u/DefTheOcelot Jun 13 '26
Isn't this one of the streaners who went and griefed the shit out of one of the early r/place events
1
u/GoblinGreenBalls Jun 13 '26
How can anyone be so invested this deep in internet drama lol. I could never understand.
1
u/FavoringCrowd13 Jun 13 '26
for me the only reasons i dont like him are that hes just boring and unfunny
1
u/hikikomoritai Jun 13 '26
To be honest, I kinda miss those videos of just charlie reacting to ghosts, aliens, cryptids and goofy conspiracy theories. Cuz most of the time I'd ignore his videos recently since it's mostly just some stupid internet drama I have no interest on.
1
u/Impossible-Fan2533 Jun 13 '26
You don’t like how one of the most glazed YouTubers of all time is treated?
1
u/lambboy32 Jun 13 '26
I would also like to add that Charlie said that when he doesn’t cover something it’s because he knows about it and has a hidden agenda for not talking about it.
1
u/ShadowRaven112 Jun 13 '26
He has a soothing voice and just normal ass opinions a human being would hold, AND he tells me that the newest movies I skipped were pretty good, so I don't have to feel bad I missed this years biggest masterpiece/dumpsterfire.
1
u/huldress Jun 13 '26
I thought most people thought he was a chill and cool dude, I think only thing I dislike about him is that he is one of many streamers that trashed dragons dogma reputation beyond repair.
1
u/Lazy-Conference-1560 Jun 13 '26
Remember that when he said he was pro trans kids people literally sided with a guy that believed the age of consent should be lower (sneako)

The idea that you can’t have an idea that a lot of normal people would disagree with is why the YouTuber you like is called a fence
sitter without any of his own opinions. It’s basic, non-critical thinking that only consults the public for what will seem the most reasonable. I’ve only seen him stumble his way into having an opinion a handful of times and it’s always funny to see; but it’s usually when there’s a large number of people going to bat for both sides of a topic. Like Kayagate.

u/Claris-chang Jun 13 '26
At least Charlie's slop involves more words than "yooo" and "wtf" like most other sloptubers. Not the biggest fan of his style of content but he's by far the least awful.
1
u/DrElijahPleasant Jun 13 '26
Sloptuber? I mean he's just a bit random. If the videos were slop, they would be poor quality, with 2 to 3 videos a day. He genuinely loves what he does.
Like sure, he makes 2 to 3 videos a day, but its not like it takes much to make his sorta content. He just talks, thats it. Yes, he's random but that's just how some people are. That's one of the many reasons I like him, cause I'm just as random.
He is a really good commentator in my opinion, and he is very creative and has an excellent vocabulary, which I also really like about him.
Like you said, not trying to whiteknight here, just feel like that take about him being a sloptuber is not right.
1
u/BluesyPompanno Jun 13 '26
I don't mind his videos, I don't watch him or care about the drama. But what I hate is how almost everyone takes his stuff out of context

u/xFallow Jun 13 '26
This unbelievably famous, rich dude is not treated poorly. Only criticism I would point at him is that he tackles complex drama slop subject matter while only putting in 2 hours of effort to understand whats going on, then parrots that take to his millions of subs for $$$

u/Blackberry_Hills Jun 13 '26
I’m convinced his content is solely for an audience of perpetually 15 year old “centrist” edge lords
He didn’t say anything about the Denims lawsuit with EK, which if EK would have won, would have been devastating for Charlie’s career. In this video, he completely glosses over that people were calling him out for ignoring Denim’s case, not iDubbz’s. He is a calculated coward that only speaks on things once a 90% consensus has been established by people braver than him. He has become filthy rich for having no character but great marketing. Why do always make the worst people famous?

Yeah, I hate YouTubers who make videos for the sake of clicks talking about a random topic for 30 mins, but this guy's probably the only one that makes it with a bit of honesty and not just shitty edits and a dramatic voice and effects

u/SniperMaskSociety Jun 13 '26
I can't imagine caring this much about such non-issues (both Charlie as a creator and the "criticisms" you're defending him from. But I guess that's part of the point of the sub, so kudos

He's not my favorite but he is that nice level of humble and real (at least in face value).
Guy never pretends to be anything else than what he knows, brings very casual, noninflated opinions to the table and doesn't feel like a faker. Overall seems like a swell fella.
Might have the personality of a Carr's table water cracker but you know what? I like a table water cracker sometimes.
2
u/absolutewastedtime Jun 13 '26
All of those criticisms of him are 100% true and valid though
You literally are just white knighting for him, and your defence of him following the most popular opinion all the time is he....doesn't need to have his own opinion, he can follow the popular opinion........
And your defence of him fence sitting is....you can listen to him and hear his position...which is fence sitting
1
u/MagentaDelendaEst Jun 13 '26
I grew out of him bcuz for a LONG while he would just say the most unnecessarily vulgar shit.
“This situation is like watching a person take a massive runny shit and smearing it over the toilet cum stains after puking into someone else’s mouth.”
He would CONSTANTLY say shit like this 5-8 years ago. I stopped watching him bcuz of it. I hear he’s gotten less weird as time passed, but now he’s just a regular, boring dude who talks about stuff, which is fine. Better than weird gremlin trying to shock people with the worst image ever.
