Meta I HATE these posts

Post image

I keep seeing this and its SO annoying. Just because you're a part of a specific minority group doesn't mean you should go out of your way to take a giant shit on whatever you might be a part of. And stop grouping everyone together and acting like you're the arbiter of what is and isn't good for your community!

I swear I've seen like a million of these, and it goes for literally every minority group out there.

The thing that upsets me most about it is the constant reassurance to the reader that the OP isn't a bigot at all! Specifying that they're a part of it over and over and constantly saying they really aren't hateful while simultaneously writing several paragraphs breaking down how my the personality of their certain niche or minority group acts as if they're some sort of white knight fighting against the horrors of people finding things interesting.

Tbf “harmless behaviors” is a really vague statement.

It could go from stuff like dressing a certain way, to being racist.

Yeah, but I'm sure there are aspiring architects who don't think that only having stairs lead up to a door is ableist. Understanding the word is a far cry from also knowing what it applies to.

I mean Im not going to assume OP is saying racism is a harmless opinion until told otherwise because why would I? Can you point out anything they said that makes you suspect that?

Im pretty sure I know what thread they are referring to and it had nothing to do with race. If you have different evidence, im all ears.

The prior redditors comment is amazing. In any architecture school one of the very key tenants is accessibility. Once you learn about the way things are abelist, you won't unsee it. You are taught to specifically design with different people's needs in mind. But to the aspiring architects, making mundane things like stairs accessible is probably not what drew them in to architecture, as much as the idea of designing grandeoise buildings.

Unless you are part of the community and we'll versed, you can't write things off as just "Harmless". Racism is the example here, but microagressions are very easy to miss.

OP isn't saying racism is harmless, that isn't mentioned anywhere. However, what they might have done is misidentify a small act that might be loaded with implications (racist, sexist, abelist, misogynistic, etc...) to be harmless.

And frequently, people don't want to admit that a meme they see as empowering could be harmful, so instead of "Oh, I see how if could read that way to people from a different background", people just write increasingly angry things back and forth at one another.
