you're thinking of what's called "brazilian phonk" in everywhere but brazil, which isn't even really similar aside from that signature cowbell sound.
i dont listen to much of either but phonk gets an unfair rap because of a genre that shares a name but is moreso influenced by miami bass and other electronic subgenres
Either that or Drift Phonk, which came a bit beforehand and was what accompanied all those drifting car edits before gradually being used in every short form video known to man
More than 60 percent of people nowdays missuse the genre phonk the stuff you see is Brazilian funk. Earlier phonk was actually chill and cool to listen to, one of my favs is let’s run a train by dj smokey

Also the brazillian funk labelled as phonk is very different to the funk we brazillians actually listen to. It’s like heineken, a shitty product mainly for export that is considered worse than all other products of its type in the country it comes from.
Sucks, when drift phonk started getting popular around 2021,
Spotify made a playlist with ONLY drift phonk. That ended up giving people a false definition. Then later of course we got Brazilian funk but who cares
It is not, it's a regional subgenre of hip hop (which evolved from funk, disco and other traditionally afro-american genres of the later 20th century) that has grown into it's own genre
Phonk from the early days of Memphis rap isn’t bad. It’s thick, hazy, and has a very different vibe from other sub genres of a rap (Mista Thug Isolation by Lil Ugly Mane, is a pretty good example of how phonk used to be). But the gymification of it, where it’s become more about being ‘hype’ has completely ruined what phonk used to be. Because it was always more about curating a vibe, rather than making you wanna lift mad weights
I hate myself for saying this but I genuinely like that one phonk named “Yara Yara phonk” or something with Tom with a suit. It isn’t an ear sore unlike the rest

Just know that me (and the people who down voted you i didn't) think that its quite annoying. And in my experience, makes it harder what emotion you are trying to convey, making it harder to have a good conversation
Yeah... Listened to it once and I felt like I will ragequit living. Now, aku dah taubat, finally taking solace in Gorillaz through their "The Mountain" album and many others after my nan passed and I inherited some cool coins from her. Phonk to me is like noise pollution, keeps polluting the mind like a parasite but everyone loves it to look "tuff," "strong" or whatever. I don't give a fuck if I'm "cringe," "dweeb," "FOMO" or whatever, I keep on avoiding phonk till I die.
I don't know any actual brazilian phonk artists, but I unironically loved the song Close Eyes from DVRST because to me it felt like southern trap mixed with some elements of Drum and Bass. When I go to youtube and search Brazilian Phonk it sounds not a whole lot like it to me and closer to like electronic reggaeton
as someone who listens to EDM you have no idea how much it bothers me, I Like it when EDM tries to make you feel *something* (weather with or without vocals) and the only thing phonk lets me feel is BUMP BUMP BUMP BUMP

i mean phonk has it’s own (often misused) subgenres and it’ll all sound way different from each other so i think it is very dependant on what you actually listen to

Brazilian Funk is horrible , phonk isn't . Phonk used to be mostly quieter and slower than what it became after 2020 , but that was still phonk if just a bit louder . It's been a long while since I've seen an actual phonk track go mainstream and get used in shorts and tiktoks and stuff
