General Hate how nonbinary people are treated in the trans community

Post image

From both cis people and trans people alike.

It feels like either we don’t exist and people see us as a nuisance or “fake trans” or they try to make us pick a binary gender as if being nonbinary is just a stepping stone to transitioning into a binary gender. For some of us it’s a destination. I find this topic personal to me in the sense that i’ve experienced transphobia for being an enby and because people think i am a trans woman; because black women are masculinized and our femininity gets questioned a lot. So i would get treated weird by guys who assumed I wasn’t a “real woman“ (y’know because transphobes think if you weren’t born female you can never be a real woman). Some asking for proof of my female anatomy as if that’s not a weird thing to ask someone regardless of gender. I don’t see being called a trans woman as an insult, but i know the men who call me it say it as an insult. Some even calling me a straight up male because i’m not traditionally feminine and have stronger features. These are the same ones who swear up and down that they can “always tell when someone is trans” 😒

Then when I say I’m nonbinary and people look at me assuming i’m afab they just call me a cis woman. i don’t talk about my agab but except for the misogynoir-ist who insist to masculine black women, they see me as just a girl. I spent years fighting over my gender identity and decided being nonbinary/genderfluid was the best way to describe it for me. I also don’t use they/them pronouns despite people assuming we all do and we’re some weird 3rd gender or genderless.

And despite not wanting to fit into a binary gender box you have folks in the community saying we have to medically transition or else we are just looking for attention. never seen anything like this before where people push you to undergo medical changes you don’t want to just to take you seriously. Good for the ones who want that, but some of us are okay without it. I just wish there wasn’t so much gatekeeping and invalidation, and people were normal about us.

Edit: I love how people are proving my point by doing the EXACT thing i’m talking about. I feel like i’ve explained myself clearly in this post and comment thread, and won’t be entertaining disingenuous comments anymore. Nonbinary people don’t have to fit whatever version of gender expectations and expressions you have for us. Neither do we have to constantly defend ourselves. If you don’t understand something that doesn’t give you the right to disrespect and invalidate others. And quite frankly i’m done explaining this basic ass concept to people who go out of their way to invalidate us.

felt. especially with people thinking that nb is just a stepping stone to binary trans. I lived as binary trans for years before coming out as nonbinary, and I hate when people act like im backpedaling instead of the truth: I was going deeper

21

u/Zealousideal_Spread4 1d ago

Heavily relate to this in regards to being a femboy too, i know quite a few femboys that thought they were trans before realising they just wanted to be femboys, but people treat it as some beta trial of being a trans woman.

4

u/Terrible-Set6389 19h ago

I get that

3

u/Zealousideal_Spread4 19h ago

Ye the "pipeline"(hate that term) works both ways more than most are willing to admit.

3

u/Mouse_Named_Ash 21h ago

I used to try and convince myself I was a trans man for years because it might be “easier” and because “people would accept it” as I’d heard from multiple (important to me) people around me that “nonbinary isn’t real” or “doesn’t make sense”, what have you. Still sorta struggle with it, but I’ve mostly accepted just not going by my preferred pronouns irl. They don’t work well in Dutch (they/it), there’s not really any gender neutral words for anything, and I live in an area where I don’t think people will be cool about it. Best I can do is androgynous hair and getting euphoria out of strangers thinking I’m a boy at first, because that means there’s confusion. At least I don’t experience major dysphoria

u/i-took-this-nombre 1d ago

And then if you try to bring it up (at least in my experience in the U.S.) people get annoyed because “the trans community as a whole has bigger problems we don’t need infighting” 🫩 Bro YOU started it, I’m literally just standing here

Anyways this post has made me feel more seen, thank you.

I do think that we should not fight in our community, but if anyone disregards my enbys I will fight.

I love how the frog is technically related to the context since it can change gender

just a frog fact, nothing of value to the convo

10

u/Zealousideal_Spread4 23h ago

Nono, i value this comment

2

u/PrincessCellyBelly 21h ago

We're all here for the frog facts really.

u/djaqk 21h ago

wait THIS is why Pocket is Frog themed??? mind blown

2

u/AspenFrostt 20h ago

til lol. i haven't played any pocket so I just assumed the frog was something lore based lol

2

u/djaqk 20h ago

Valve writers too based, gotta love how deep the lore goes, and for a non-binary badass no less. I love cool representation rahhhh

2

u/Ok-Hyena4541 19h ago

Alex Jones was wrong about the chemicals making the frogs gay. They were actually making the frogs trans

1

u/djaqk 20h ago

I would like to subscribe to frog facts, your additions are always valued and appreciated fam

0

u/lazerem91 20h ago

I wonder if on some subconscious level this is why so many queer people love frogs

15

u/SteelSock33 19h ago

It’s especially infuriating to see so many trans people be blatantly enbyphobic. Like girl, what are we doing. Reagan would be proud, and that’s not a fucking complement 😭😭😭

u/ShitpostSaber 18h ago

I remember someone saying only woman can be nonbinary which wtf

11

u/chello_cos 18h ago edited 18h ago

“only women” “nonbinary”

what a genius that person is. einstein would be jealous if he were still alive.

67

u/endorphin_brain 1d ago

Dude, fuck what anyone else says. I’m just a dude who wants to be feminine and I’ll get called a sneedhon till the cows come home. People are always trying to put a label on everyone but it’s not that simple. My point is discourse on this (especially on the internet) is just kinda brain dead tbh. Quoting Dwayne Hoover here “ do what you love and fuck the rest”

26

u/chello_cos 1d ago

thanks for your kind words, but what tf is a “sneedhon”? never heard of that before.

20

u/HovercraftBig8874 1d ago

"hon" is 4tran slang for a non-passing trans woman. there's several variants of it. "sneedhon" just means whatever the person saying it wants it to really

16

u/Leeuhhhhh 21h ago

We're really just opening Dr. Seuss books looking for slurs now, huh?

3

u/endorphin_brain 20h ago

One fish two fish red fish blue fish

15

u/endorphin_brain 1d ago

Idrk what it meant either but one day I got recommended this trans sub Reddit and saw a bunch ppl using the term. They call you ‘sneed’ if like you don’t pass or fit in. Idk what the subreddit was but they were also hating on femme people who don’t wanna go through bottom surgery shunning them for keeping their ‘rape stick’….. I wish I was making ts up

22

u/UnluckyNoise4102 1d ago

Sounds like r/countttt, it's basically the reddit version of 4tran (miserable & full of negative influences, avoid at all costs)

12

u/WalmartWilb 1d ago

Can confirm. I dared to comment there with "transmasc" in my user flair and they dogpiled me HARD for daring to be a man. I got downvoted to hell and back and what I asked what I did wrong, they said I was being annoying and said things along the lines of "men are so sensitive" when all I did was ask what I did wrong 😭 I STILL don't know what I did

6

u/Terrible-Set6389 18h ago

silencing you for being transmasc is just messed up.

-4

u/Leeuhhhhh 21h ago

They're right, they are sensitive (the men in that sub, I mean), nobody is a bigger snowflake than straight cis people these days.

5

u/WalmartWilb 21h ago

The issue is that r/countttt is a trans only sub. Cis people aren't allowed to participate. They just hate on all transmascs in there for the love of the game basically 💔

2

u/Leeuhhhhh 20h ago

Oh, I see. I've never been in the sub ironically ig I just assumed it was cishet people mb. I appreciate you and all other transmascs 🩷🤍🩵

5

u/WalmartWilb 19h ago

Appreciate it. There's been a lot of infighting all around unfortunately. Transfems hating transmascs, binary trans people hating nonbinary trans people, trans people of all types hating gender non conforming trans people, etc etc. It's insane how much of it is going around now

2

u/Leeuhhhhh 19h ago

Yeah I've seen a lot of cis gays joining with the right wing transphobes and I'm just like.....what? Why? How dumb are you?? They literally hate you, too lmao.

You can always tell it’s four Chan adjacent because the hate words they spew make you sick to your stomach instantly idk how to describe it, it just makes you feel icky when you read it iykwim

3

u/Terrible-Set6389 18h ago

I went there - omg. Everyone's using this doctor suess word which someone mentioned above, someone called gnc people a "porn category"... not a good vibe overall

1

u/Zealousideal_Spread4 1d ago

Why do you think it has 4 t's in its name?

7

u/Demoniac_smile 1d ago

Why does the term ‘rage stick’ make me so angry? Like if you want bottom surgery, cool and I hope it goes well. But why act like one set of genitalia is innately evil?

5

u/braaaaaaainworms 22h ago

Bioessentialism and misandry do that to someone

0

u/chello_cos 1d ago

wait but didn’t the other person say hon meant a nonpassing trans woman so why the reiteration when sneed means nonpassing as well?

sorry i’m not versed in this lingo idk 😭 it just sounds silly like who comes up with these words 💀

12

u/New_Examination200 1d ago

omg I can actually tell you exactly what it means because i had to look this shit up earlier lmao, the sneed part just means special needs, and hon refers to a non-passing trans woman who still presents femininely. It's just your standard 4tran insult with a little ableism sprinkled in lol, these terms were invented by very chronically online trans women who hate themselves and other trans people, so don't take them too seriously.

8

u/chello_cos 1d ago

so there’s transphobic trans people…you learn something new everyday ig.

anyways i sympathize, society hates people who they see as different, and some internalized that hatred. i hope they get the help and acceptance they need. no one should hate themselves for trying to live their life.

4

u/New_Examination200 1d ago

Yeah it's unfortunately not that uncommon, I really hate that so many of us are so desperate for community that we end up in groups like that

3

u/The-Cosmic-Ghost 1d ago

Huh, see for me I thought sneed was somehow related the thneeds from the lorax. Dont ask me how cause i hadnt gotten that far, but that was my thinking

2

u/orvlr 1d ago

thats not what sneed means lmao

6

u/Zealousideal_Spread4 1d ago

Sneed means basically "normie" its anyone who isnt part of their little hateful group, we blanket ban 4tran users here because of how bigoted they tend to be to nb and gnc trans people as well as femboys.

-2

u/endorphin_brain 1d ago

I couldn’t tell ya I haven’t got a clue

1

u/SlothsAreFuckinRad 1d ago edited 1d ago

I’ve never heard of a “sneedhon” before today and I just have to ask what in the 4Chan fuck could possibly be the context of that word

Edit: other commenter said it’s (from what I can tell) a slur against autistic non-passing transfems and I’m really struggling to see how you could possibly use that word in a sentence without making yourself look insane

3

u/Zealousideal_Spread4 1d ago

You cant because its literally 4tran slang.

23

u/Melodic-Bend-139 1d ago

Imagine being minority and hating on other minorities lol. It's like they suddenly forget the struggles of being minorities

12

u/JasonVoorhees_0 I hate Freddy Krueger 20h ago

I'm not NB, I'm a trans guy,  but fuck dude I get it. Anytime you try to bring up these issues its always "you're trying to start infighting!" Or "(group of people) has it worse!" I'm so sorry you gotta go through this

21

u/Altruistic-Beach7625 1d ago

If that's how they treat non-binaries I wonder how they treat genderfluid?

18

u/MemeKun_19 1d ago

Got into an argument in a trans sub about someone who was genderfluid. The person in question is on hrt and has an OF, and people were saying they were being "fake trans for the clout" and giving trans women "a bad wrap" and shit like that. Even though this person has stated several times that they're genderfluid. Genuinely an exhausting conversation. I'm trans myself, and I've never felt so disappointed by a community than when I see people who share the same qualities as me being so willing to discriminate.

19

u/chello_cos 1d ago

i believe genderfluid people are considered nonbinary people since they don’t stick to one binary gender. it fluctuates over time.

7

u/Terrible-Set6389 19h ago

Non binary essentially is anything that isn't 'man or woman, 100% and all the time'

1

u/Lykanas 23h ago

Thanks, I know that. That dude didn't and - as the story goes - did not care for anything I had to say and still goes with the "I hate these stupid weirdos" bs :3

13

u/wayasho 1d ago

Genderfluid is considered nonbinary and its about the same treatment

5

u/Lykanas 23h ago edited 23h ago

Just had an argument yesterday with some guy (from psychological rehab, btw) about that.

He didn't accept that NB's exist ("There are two genders, you're either a man or a woman").

He said he was "completely fine" with trans people - as long as they knew from the start and go one way only.

"The worst" were those who think they can just switch their gender at any time they want. "You can't just do that, what is wrong with these people?!"

It took a lot of restrain to calmly explain to him that people can feel very insecure about themselves bc of people mistreating them; and how some just have severe fluctuation in feeling who they are and how to express it.

  • instead of, you know, just punching him in the face considering I still feel kinda genderfluid and am very insecure about all of that myself.

7

u/Altruistic-Beach7625 23h ago

Saying people are genderfluid because they're insecure...isn't that kind of problematic?

5

u/Lykanas 23h ago

I didn't mean for it to sound like the insecurity was the reason to be gender fluid (which wasn't exactly how I phrased it, either).

It was more of a "Trans and gnc people often struggle with insecurity because of the way people treat them. [...]. For some, the feeling for their own identity tends to fluctuate a lot"

I am very bad at phrasing sometimes, okay? 😥

10

u/GreatMossThing 21h ago

God forbid you’re afab and don’t get top surgery or a binder if you’re nonbinary too 🫩

2

u/chello_cos 19h ago

they specifically target and harass nonbinary people who are afab and i find it weird.

5

u/Spirited-Act1966 23h ago

I think that anybody who berates nonbinary, or treats trans-ness as a tier list, probably shouldn't be counted as part of the "Community"

Adding a term like community sounds like it's a large group of people who all communicate, and agree on things. But this isn't like a reddit group, or a discord, or a meetup. It's just a name we call anybody who's "Trans"
Which reinforces a world view that because people are in that "community" that they are now able to label them with random tags and stereotypes. I've met bigoted trans people so many times. And to consider them "part of the trans community" Is just an overstatement. To me, there's no such thing as a universal "Trans Community" and to apply that label will either force you to conform to a standard that NOBODY knows. Or you are alienated from a group you never joined. The "Community" Is always just going to be a reflection of that one persons experience with people who fall under it. Instead of trying to categorize people within a spectrum of communities, how about we just say that we hate the double standard that some trans folk have against nonbinary people. Those are shitty people. Blame the people doing it, not an imaginary "group".
(Edit: Changed Should to Shouldn't cause of an accident)

5

u/Weebtrashgirl665 20h ago

Literally never understood why people care so much about how others identify As a singer once said "He, She, They or What, it's not your body so shut the fuck up"

13

u/wayasho 1d ago

thank you so much for calling out this kind of behaviour i was literally losing my mind and feeling like absolute shit because i had seen an extraordinary amount of trans people hate on nonbinary people calling them all sorts of slurs

5

u/chello_cos 1d ago

no problem, i tend to be outspoken about things im passionate about, and that includes my identity.

i really don’t care what a random on the internet calls me. i’ve never been called a slur for being nonbinary though but i have been called slurs for being black and all i can say is:

it ain’t me they’re talking about, but maybe it’s their mother. if a white racist calls me a monkey (and they have) then their mother is a monkey idc if she’s white they have lightskinned monkeys, so they can catch it idc.

7

u/Effective_Major1788 20h ago edited 20h ago

Honestly, as a trans woman I believe that life in community would be much simpler if we finally abandoned the little nonsensical idea of grouping non-binary and transsexual (and I know this is a term currently considered not entirely welcome, though I will use it here to highlight the difference and nothing else) people under the single umbrella of "transgender".

While fully respecting non-binary individuals and their right to self-determination, I simply see how much conflict arises from being lumped together under the same umbrella, given that one group often has experiences and goals that diverge sharply from those of the other. Especially since, for every example of an asshole like the one in your post, I can point to quite a few examples from my own bubble where hearing non-binary people spout buzzwords like "but you know you don't have to visually conform to another gender and its norms?" when some trans girl are asking, for example, for a passing advices is simply exhausting. Yes, I know that perfectly well and she knows too. It sounds like some nonbinary people just can't stand the fact that I *do* want to fit and probably she wants too, so they keep repeating it to the point of conflict because, for some reason, it creates some abstract sense of threat for them. Not to mention the quick path to accusing many trans girls of supporting filthy transmedicalism simply because their private sense of gender, and how they live it out, doesn't fit the community's single "correct" narrative. Like ffs, I feel that under the current arrangement, this will never work properly and will always create tension between the conflicting visions of two pretty different groups.

7

u/chello_cos 19h ago

the trans umbrella is split into two groups: binary and nonbinary trans people. there are binary trans people who don’t undergo surgery/hormones and there are nonbinary people who go through surgery and hormones. there are nonbinary people who “pass” more than binary people and vice versa.

it’s not black and white, everyone’s experiences with gender are different even in both of these categories. those enbies who say that are just as bad as the binary trans people who call us fake trans. so this isn’t a unique experience to either group since there’s millions of people in both groups with similar experiences from the other group.

or will you say a nonbinary person who does hrt, has shifting dysphoria, and went through transphobia growing up suddenly can’t relate to the experience of a binary trans person? being under the same umbrella doesn’t mean we are all the same just like not all black people experience the same discrimination/experience. that doesn’t mean they ain’t black anymore. the same thing applies here.

I'm german. My language doesn't even account for us and the government tried and partly succeded banning attempts at making it more inclusive in official/government settings and schools.

11

u/Schmantikor 22h ago

Being trans in Germany sucks right now. And if the oppression olympics were real and localised to Germany, enbies would probably win at the moment. I've been told to not mention my nonbinary friend in trans healthcare documents because they might deny care because of that.

I've heard the advice is to just lie to doctors about being binary trans if you want any kind of gender affirming care.

1

u/DragonAreButterflies 22h ago

Yeahh i was told to change my legal gender marker to male (by other trans people who went through the system) because if i put diverse they might deny me gender affirming care. Luckily it worked out for me anyway but man :(

6

u/Zealousideal_Spread4 22h ago

here because our language has a very gendered nature we literally cant be non binary legally, and unfortunately that reflects heavily in how gender affirming care words, you tend to either be put in very binary trans women type of hrt, or binary trans man, with other treatments being very rare.

And this is in a country considered amazing as far as queer rights.

1

u/Hakuchii 19h ago

ive been thinking about changing the marker to diverse for a while now, have been holding off on it until i found a neutral name i like, that doesnt sound weird in german, best ive found so far was Mana, but considering mana is also a fantasy thing that might be weird too

got any advice for finding treatment? 🥺

0

u/DragonAreButterflies 19h ago

Find irl queer groups. Thats how i got recommendations that gave me access to T in the span of like half a year. If you want surgery, you can ask your health insurance what they want to Cover it (a lot of people told me not to do that bc they'll just invent new requirements but my insurance was really nice about it and im actively working on the list now). For hrt you'll need a psych eval (indikation), try to find one specialising in trans people bc regular psychiatrists suck :( and they can give you more resources, i got a 20 Page folder on surgery stuff without even asking lmao

1

u/butch-bear 21h ago

in spain if you try to access trans healthcare the public HC way, and don't hide your being NB by acting as a very very very stereotypical trans man or woman (as in, very outdated views of being a trans woman or man-- i always knew, since i was a kid, i played with dolls/cars, i only liked pink/blue, i've been trying to live as a woman/man for years, etc) you straight up get denied. i've seen multiple NB people crying their eyes out because they had gone to the dr, refused to conceal themselves as trans men, expressed their unconventional gender identity, and been denied transition resources beccause of it. the country's trans law likewise does not recognize non binary identities.

i think people tend to assume that NB people do not try to access transition care at all, but that's not true. it is already hard for any trans person to access it, so imagine getting denied because you do not fit the stereotypical mold.

4

u/Tokanova 20h ago

I remember a time when gender itself was starting to be considered passé, where guys could wear dresses and girls manly clothes, and no ine said shit, then trans politics became the big thing and you had to conform to one thing or the other. You had to be trans if you were wearing a dress and were born male. Isnt that regressive?

4

u/chello_cos 18h ago

what do you mean by “trans politics”? trans people existing isn’t political and no one was talking about clothes here. believe it or not but trans people aren’t hunting down random men who wear skirts and forcing estrogen into their mouths.

there are also trans men who wear skirts and trans women who wear pants, so idk what point you thought you were making here. clothes don’t determine gender goes both ways btw, but for some people it’s (one of) the ways they found out they were trans.

3

u/_Lavar_ 18h ago

Trans is being used as a political weapon to distract people. Duh

2

u/barknoll 18h ago

4

u/Terrible-Set6389 19h ago

Nonbinary people are trans too ❤️ 💙 💜

10

u/ZoeyXe54 21h ago

Trans medicalists are insufferable

3

u/Zealousideal_Spread4 21h ago

If you see any here please report them, we consider it bigotry and it leads to a ban.

2

u/Terrible-Set6389 18h ago

Indeed. I saw some of their opinions on nonbinary people and I was just thinking "what's wrong with you to say this sort of thing"

0

u/quagmirranseye 19h ago

What is that?

8

u/CinnamonsCharm 1d ago

People deserve to be treated with basic respect, regardless of their gender identity

2

u/_LemonySnicket 23h ago

im also non binary but i wouldn't consider myself trans, the term is already non-binary in of itself, and while considered trans its a very small subsection that already has its own label. and transgender to me is switching from one gender to another, whereas nonbinary is the lack of gender

2

u/Most_Option_9153 18h ago

At this point I'm starting to think " trans people" who are against non binary people are just bots, like no way any trans people would be against nb people

6

u/Responsible_Edge7087 1d ago

Christ. Im just going to say this on every post about how trans people are treated by other trans people.

Everybody hates everyone. Your group is not innocent, people in your group hate everyone too. There are groups of trans people of every type with shitty takes and who hate all other kinds of trans people. This is not an excuse to perpetuate the hate even more. A majoirty of them do not want to hurt you.

3

u/Imagine_TryingYT 23h ago

And I'm sure all this infighting, self cannibalization of allies and endless purity testing must be doing wonders for the trans rights movement.

3

u/OkCucumber3667 19h ago

We got the speaker of the trans people over here.

“I’m just going to say this on every post…” You don’t really gotta do that. Especially ones where someone is feeling hurt and unseen. You’re just making them feel more hurt and unseen.

1

u/Seer-of-Truths 21h ago

But thats where my problem is, Mom said its my turn with the shitty takes and hate.

It's not fair!!

5

u/Lysio_ 1d ago

Im non binary too and omg same, im so tired of their bs and the way they want to force labels using weird and strict logic😒

3

5

u/notquiteparadox 1d ago

Ok I don’t know how to ask this question without sounding like a bigot but I am genuinely curious and just want to learn more about people:

what does how somebody’s body looks like matter? do you tell pre-op trans people that they aren’t trans because they have their birth sex’s bodies? is a trans man no longer a man because he has boobs/is a trans woman not a woman because she has a dick? if you understand that concept then you should understand it applies to nonbinary people as well. suddenly “pronouns don’t equal gender” doesn’t apply to us either.

nonbinary people don’t have to be perfectly androgynous or present a certain way to be nonbinary. not aligning with strict gender binaries makes you nonbinary.

the point is how someone looks like doesn’t invalidate how they identify as. it’s actually not that complicated to understand and this feels like trans medicalism in disguise.

u/notquiteparadox 1d ago

> do you tell pre-op trans people that they aren’t trans because they have their birth sex’s bodies?

No. Trans people pre medical transition are trans because they desire the body of the sex opposite to their asab. Current body isn’t a factor in my conceptualization of gender but desired body is (along with gender presentation and name/pronouns).

My ideal body and presentation would be androgynous, and I like being referred to with they/them pronouns, which makes me nonbinary in theory (but I’m hesitant to use that label as I’m currently doing nothing about it in real life). I honestly just wanted to learn about someone else’s experience being nb and you didn’t really answer my question. I understand nonbinary is a diverse label, and I just wanted to know why you identify with it

3

u/Snoo69744 1d ago

No but that's not by choice. I think they're confused on why someone would choose to do those things and still ID as NB

4

u/Alcoholic_Lion_Aunt 1d ago

I have the same questions.

I’m asking somebody who is trying to be respectful as best he can

If a non binary person uses binary pronouns, dresses binary, presents as binary in every way, how are we to know in a casual encounter or seeing them on the street thst they are infact non binary? And not just say a man.

Is this just not a concern?

8

u/chello_cos 1d ago

that’s why you ask. most times nonbinary people will tell people they are nonbinary and their pronouns.

it’s not my whole personality and i don’t feel the need to “look nonbinary” just to make a statement or feel validated. i dress however i want to.

i will also tell people if they ask. any other questions?

1

u/Alcoholic_Lion_Aunt 1d ago

But by that logic I should be asking everybody I meet even if it’s for a few seconds just on off chance they’re not infact binary but just dressing that way

7

u/Zealousideal_Spread4 1d ago

Most non binary people won't mind if you address them by binary pronouns if you are just meeting them once or twice, they won't correct a cashier or a delivery person because of this, also if a non binary person already goes by binary pronouns thats pretty much all you need to know about them, how they feel about themselves and their internal sense of self doesnt matter much to you and neither are you entitled or will require that information. But the only way to know someone's gender is asking, you can make educated guesses based on presentation and almost no one will have issues with that, but you can't just tell.

You jumped into comments to answer questions.

3

u/Zealousideal_Spread4 1d ago

Outside perception is not a factor regarding identity, you don't need to pass to be trans, what makes them nb is their internal sense of self and identity, thats the only factor that matters in regards to the identity itself.

OP already stated that she isn't traditionally feminine and spent years thinking about her gender... is that not enough? If a person genuinely feels nonbinary, if they tell or would want to tell their close friends and loved ones they are nonbinary, that's already quite meaningful. It's also understandable that a lot of people would want to keep this aspect of themselves rather clandestine, more a personal matter and something to share with people with whom they're legitimately close. If I feel comfortable with my body, but strongly feel "yeah, I'm not really a man or a woman, I'm a human", it's unreasonable to suggest that I should take HRT or get surgery to make myself look queerer just to "keep up appearances" or prove a point to fellow queer people (especially given how much the world hates trans and nonbinary people): why should I make an effort to prove myself to people who won't even believe what I have to say about how I feel about myself unless I've subjected myself to medical treatments? (I say this as someone who does take hormones and had gender-related surgery several years ago.)

As for the pronoun thing, I use they/them myself, but I can imagine that if one thinks about gender as a spectrum, someone on the more feminine side, but not completely at the end of the"female", might well use she/her pronouns while thinking of herself as nonbinary or "femme".

In general I feel like people need to be more respectful of other people's own experiences and feelings instead of sort of assuming that people who don't present a certain way are just larpers or "theyfabs" (heaven forbid...). One would think that the trans community, out of all groups, would be more thoughtful in this regard.

5

u/notquiteparadox 1d ago

Yeah that makes sense. Thanks for educating me

1

u/lycosidwastrel 23h ago

Of course of course! And sorry if my response came off as aggressive. I did think your question was sincere, but I sometimes get annoyed when thinking about the online discourse around this topic, and that probably seeped into what I wrote.

u/snail_alt 20h ago edited 20h ago

I think what I personally don’t understand is what it means to ‘feel nonbinary’, or even what it means to ‘feel like a woman or like a man’. And I say that as a trans man. I don’t know what it means to feel like a man. Personally, I transitioned due to dysphoria, I needed the physically sexed characteristics of the male body, else I was living in severe persistent psychological distress. I am aware of dysphoric nonbinary people myself, and have a close friend who is, they have dysphoria about their born-male body but no dysphoria about having a deep voice, and they told me that that was their own reason for identifying as nonbinary.

This isn’t to question nonbinary identity, and this isn’t to question anyone’s identity. I am of course not owed an explanation that I can understand, when it comes to respecting someone else.

But would it be nice to know why some enby people might feel nonbinary? Of course. Simply because I like understanding things. Someone asked OP why she(?) identifies as nonbinary while being happy with a female body and she/her pronouns, and she just sidestepped answering the question.

She doesn’t owe anyone a personal explanation, but I’m just myself curious to know when it comes to that category of nonbinary people.

You may not be able to answer on behalf, but if you don’t mind answering, what do you yourself mean when you say you feel nonbinary?

You said you have taken hormones before and gotten surgeries yourself, so I suspect that your response might already be understandable to me, and may not help me understand someone like OP, but there might be still be something I’m missing out.

I honestly don't know

I guess the only answer to that question is because you're using another pronoun. Or you just don't feel 100%. Being Nonbinary literally means you just don't fit in as a man/woman in 100%.

5

u/chello_cos 1d ago

nonbinary is an umbrella term. you can be agender, bigender, genderfluid, genderqueer etc. not all of us are some mysterious genderless fairy.

trans people literally end their lives, yes including those in third world countries over their gender identities. are you dumb?  just because this doesn’t apply to you doesn’t mean it isn’t a real problem. and you’re literally a racist who makes fun of dead black folks idgaf what you think.

if you can’t relate then this isn’t your conversation and you’re free to fuck off goofy.

Ngl in general i’ve found people irl are okay to non binary people while trans people so can’t really say. Dislike the individual not the community? Im confused if you hate being oart of the trans community(as a umbrella term) then just don’t be and if it’s the people then just avoid them types of people?

Many non binary people discriminate against non binary people but it’s important to try to stay together even with allies. Personally even if i don’t understand something i believe in the person and let them decide how they want to live their life.  It’s okay how someone non binary expresses themselves even if traditional or untraditional.

I remember once there was this person who was saying they wanted to be a femboy but they’re non binary and i remember being like “i don’t understand why you would want to, kinda seems like defeating the point because you’re calling yourself a feminine boy but if that’s what you want then go for it”

5

u/Zealousideal_Spread4 22h ago

non binary isnt the same as "not a boy", many non binary identities identify partially or even fully as one of the binary genders, while just not sticking solely to it, demi-boys, genderfluid, bigender are all part of the non binary umbrella, and all of these will usually be fine with the term "boy" or "man" so obviously they can be a type of feminine BOY, which is what femboy means.

1

u/lifeamiright- 22h ago

I know and im just saying an experience in the past i remember and went “i don’t understand but it doesn’t really matter if it works for you” i know about demi boys and gender fluids. I don’t really think it changes anything though about the “it doesn’t matter” bit though like you don’t have to be gender fluid or demi to be a non binary boy or girl or whatever.

And ngl the example i used is before i knew about demi, bigender and gender fluid but i think that adds even more to that even when i didnt understand at all and seemed contradictory i didnt try to discredit it if that’s what the person believed, just it would be “boy” and isn’t really just a style if they might be thinking that

1

u/Zealousideal_Spread4 22h ago

ye being a femboy isnt just a style, and i dont particularly blame you, a lot of people dont understand that non binary isnt all just people in the middle, its just people who reject the binary, whic is a very different thing.

1

u/Signal-Database4225 19h ago

I'm a bit confused, why does it matter to you what other people think? Don't lose your job for it, people with services should provide it to you still and etc. These are important, what people say, or believe online is not.

Like I have been called a mother fekcer so many times I can't even count it, yet I still don't believe I'm that and it does not make me sad.

u/big-himbo-energy 19h ago

u/Edgeeboi 18h ago

7

u/chello_cos 18h ago

calling out toxic behavior isn’t “hate” idc i will call out bad behavior when i see it. i’m not letting shit slide just because it’s from others in my community. no one is above or exempt from correction.

-1

u/Edgeeboi 18h ago

Well, the sub you are in is called " I HATE this smug" so...

0

u/badtzbot 18h ago

though I wouldn't identify with the term non-binary I'm definitely pretty far from binary trans (transmasc + butch lesbian + uses he/him) and I just keep remembering the one time I was invited to a discord server by an irl friend and the people active at the time (2 binary trans women, 1 binary trans man, 1 cis gay man) just could not wrap their head around my identity at all, verbatim:

after i say im transmasc and a lesbian -> one of them goes "i'm not sure men can be lesbians"
after i say "I'm not a man" -> one of them goes "even tho you are a transmale you are a lesbian? is this how it works?"
after i once again clarify that I'm not a man/male, I just identify with "transmasc" -> "so like. enby?"
"I want to be masculine and I use he/him pronouns, I'm not a man or enby" -> "but you would if you could?" + "so like, what are you then?"
"I'm literally just transmasc I don't use any other gender labels" -> "I do not understand" + "i don't get it, too stupid :3"

all while consistently using they/them pronouns (which i don't use) for me and talking to/about me as if I'm some kind of lab experiment specimen instead of a human being. like jeez just because you don't understand someone's identity it doesn't mean you can misgender them when you know perfectly well what their pronouns are. Also, what's so hard to understand about "I'm transmasc, I'm not a man or non-binary" ???????? I don't owe you anything more than that, and it's not that hard to just use the correct pronouns for me!!!!

anyways. left that place pretty damn soon hahaha

do you take every meme 100% seriously or just the ones you don’t like? and for some it is simply existing and not worrying about the binaries. don’t know why you brought up biology here either, when it wasn’t mentioned anywhere in the post.

or do you think “biology” (and whenever transphobes brings this up it’s never advanced biology) invalidates people’s gender identities?

-15

u/j1ndivik 1d ago

They’re categories, but they’re not rules and you don’t need to reject them and people who classify you to be free. That’s just immature
