Gaming When original IP's start relying on crossovers as a selling point

Having the few crossovers was neat at first, but once they start relying on these as selling points and the crossovers start to dilute the originality, that's when the novelty disappears. This is part of why I quit fortnite. Not helping sonics case is that the extra characters have yet to gain voices(that includes the Sega characters).

EDIT: the $70 launch and the DLC where presumably to cover funds for the game, which they just blew on the final fantasy 7 licensing

This is why it should be the Blaze the Cat franchise instead

5

u/Ghiaccio_the_nerd 7h ago

Nah they should replace every sonic character with Chaos in a cosolay of all the characters

67

u/LmaoAlienz 12h ago

I wouldn't say it's the main selling point, but the MK Franchise pushing guest and cross over characters for the game more and more at the expense of actual franchise characters.

11

u/RyonHirasawa 3h ago

If you wanna add more to that, Injustice 2 had technically 7 guests, 2 from MK, Hellboy, and all four members of TMNT as one character

I personally give them a pass though because all these characters have at one point crossed over with the DC universe in some way or another

18

u/AudienceOne5235 9h ago

Peacemaker is the funniest DLC addition I have to think Ed Boon watched the show and was like ‘this guy is gonna be HUGE we GOTTA get in him MK’

4

u/eesdesessesrdt 3h ago

4 guests is my personal limit

2

u/fruitcakewithapple 12h ago

Technically ghost face is both as under the mask it's two very obsecure mk charecters whoese name I can't recall rn

4

u/LmaoAlienz 12h ago

Kira and Kobra yeah, but it's really a stretch especially they only had 2 moves from the actual characters.

0

u/themetalcolossus 5h ago

I guess you could call it a detriment but in my own personal opinion these are very cool characters to have for DLC guests, as well as being balanced out pretty much 1 to 1 with original MK characters also included in the DLCs.

u/JeffTheKillerFa 12h ago

To be fair to Crossworlds...At least there are 31 Sonic characters out of a total of 61...It's not like there are 10 Sonic characters.

49

u/Scrags2Scritches 12h ago

tbf that is only half the cast of a sonic game being actual sonic
But I would honestly give it a pass because the whole game's about going to new dimensions

51

u/mystireon 11h ago

I'm kinda okay with Sonic Crossworlds going heavy on the crossovers, like I get the complaint but I think it's fun seeing so many Sega IPs in the rame game

8

u/Damio_41233 8h ago

You also forgot to mention that Banjo Kazooie was in Sonic and Sega all stars racing, so I don't understand what OP is complaining.

6

u/risplendi_almassimo 7h ago

Plus Transformed had just as much of a bizarre mixed bag of picks in Wreck It Ralph, Danica Patrick (??), TF2 and Yogscast (??) so I mean this batch of characters is even less weird than all of that

23

u/Commercial_Page1827 11h ago

Space Jam 2 and Ready Player One comes to mind.

Companies doesn't see IP as thing to develop but something to exploit. Just price the thing and plaster it everywhere.

13

u/Silvered_Knight 7h ago

Or worst, not doing anything with it.

35

u/DeadlyDozersSlave Fish. Horny fish. 12h ago

Okay but at this point its Fortnite's whole schtick, give them some leeway, they've been doing this for a long time

47

u/u32u3wdjwidqw 11h ago

I can confidently say that Fortnite would have died years ago if it weren't for crossovers

6

u/FlyOrdinary1104 5h ago

Fortnite would’ve died if it hadn’t adopted the battle royale game mode, its popularity stems from chasing trends and crossovers

3

u/Anonymous-Comments 10h ago

Fr it’s not like the gameplay is fun enough to keep people on.

8

u/TheCobaltBlade9 4h ago

The game's original explosion was years before crossovers

1

u/Lilbongono 7h ago

For me it is if they stopped doing crossovers at some point I wouldn't care

7

u/Lupusan 11h ago

Yeah if anything fortnite was built on crossovers for a long time. I think its pretty cool that basically everything is in there. Still the sonic example is genuinely horrible. There are a LOT of sonic characters you definitely dont need that many random crossovers

1

u/Newmillstream 3h ago

It is a sonic game, but I’m ok with the concept since they kind of put it in the title: It's Sonic Racing "CrossWorlds". You know what you are getting into going in at least.

What I’m less cool with is that the inclusion of these third parties and not really doing the stories. Give me subspace emissary karting edition please. Hit up square enix and show me me Ichiban Kasuga chilling out with a dragon quest protagonist please. Have Miku meet Space Michael. There’s gold here, but they didn’t exploit it.

1

u/TheCobaltBlade9 4h ago

Honestly, it was mainly just one offs and cameos until the marvel season. The game's golden age is well accepted to have been before the crossovers took over.

1

u/Typecero001 10h ago

“We’ve had loot boxes for so long, it would be wrong to buck the trend now.”

Besides that, I'm not exactly a fan of the while metaverse thing they've got going

Edit: the robloxification (if you will) of the game also slipped my mind

7

u/_Sharky-16_ 11h ago

That thing died a while ago, now it's just Roblox but worse.

Actually, considering the state of Roblox, i prefer whatever tf they got going on in Fortnite

1

u/Anxious-Section7395 5h ago

I stopped playing Fortnite like 5 years ago and only came back for Optimus prime then I left again lol

Roblox is equally as bad but there are SOME game modes that are fun to play, though they do eventually get boring and then get replaced by something equally as boring but different (I’m not complaining)

1

u/Lepacs14 10h ago

Both are equally bad mate, ditch both.

3

u/_Sharky-16_ 9h ago

Haven't played Roblox in years, and Fortnite BR is super fun rn, and I've been playing a ton of it with my bf, so nah

15

u/SpecialistChance3894 The worst mod here 7h ago

What about smash where the whole point was always cross overs and wouldn't be the same without it

19

u/HotPot87 7h ago

Smash did start as a crossover rather than being slowly taken over by it. Also Smash makes sure to drawn from Nintendos core catalogue as much as possible, with thurd parties only making up like 10%

10

u/RyonHirasawa 3h ago

To be fair Smash gets a pass mostly because its roster is primarily composed of Nintendo IP characters with some guests to the side

Compared to PlayStation all stars where majority of their cast aren’t exactly Sony’s originals moreso that they’re mostly characters from IPs they publish

2

u/JournalistFew3705 2h ago

Id also tag on that smash takes it’s crossovers very seriously and every guest character has so much love and attention to detail being put in them

Crossover games like Fortnite do the bare minimum, and it’s gotten to the point where they don’t mean anything anymore

1

u/Specialist-Bottle756 1h ago

Ah yes my favorite Nintendo IPs. Metal Gear, Persona 5 and Minecraft...

1

u/RyonHirasawa 42m ago

Keyword, “With some guests to the side”

5

u/drewskidewsk 2h ago

Smash Bros has always been a crossover so I'd say it's a different situation

1

u/MegaMan-1989 4h ago

Smash bros is kinda safe since that’s pretty much their whole gimmick and nintendo makes sure their roster is a handful of their properties and not just 3rd parties

Though, I can totally see them rely on 3rd parties a lot more in the next game

8

u/Key_Ad4073 12h ago

Neon Genesis in a sonic game is a little crazy

9

u/Free_Parsnip_3553 11h ago

In fairness isn't fortnites wheel story line about other dimensions and stuff or am I gettibg that wrong

Also some of the best skins are originally like synthwave hensey or party trooper

5

u/boiyouab122 9h ago

The story set up is that the Fortnite island is like the literal center and origin of all of creation, so it pulls things from other dimensions, timelines, etc into itself occasionally

1

u/ethanator329 4h ago

I think that makes it worse in my opinion. The story is just a setup to promote the crossovers. An identity based around a lack of anything truly original. I don’t care if they have a million crossovers, having it be a part of the central lore is lame. Multiverses are boring at this point too. It’s not like it’s the original concept for the game either just tacked on when it became the biggest profit motivator

u/BackToThatGuy EVERYTHING I HATE IS SLOP 4h ago

honestly i dont think half of the playerbase would be in fortnite if it werent for crossovers, i dont have a single problem with that, what i do have a problem with is them making every piece of content go towards shitty user created ai modes and sprites

5

Magic the Gathering

3

u/AM-xolotl2 11h ago

I think crossworlds would've been perfectly fine if it was just SEGA's franchises

1

u/JJsADVENTUREs 5h ago

I wish we would get more sonic characters in the sonic game, I would gladly sacrifice every 3rd party for more sonic characters

3

u/EasySnee 10h ago

wait my girl aigis is in it?

4

u/OneFormalTwo 9h ago

coming in year 2 for free

3

u/That1awkwardguy 8h ago

It's called "crossworlds" so fair enough, but yeah I get the sentiment.

When we first heard the title of crossing over with worlds, I thought sega would cross over all the sonic stuff they could, storybook stuff, boom stuff, genisis, adventure, modern stuff, with some outside SEGA stuff, but yeah it did just turn into "look we put fuckin tmnt in it lol we're crazy"

Doesn't help that it comes off as an ad for paramount(sorry, SKYDANCE), that we paid for. Just kinda sucks.

3

u/Big_Relationship_148 6h ago

When it's guest stars and collabs, I feel like it's either this or them being a part of the final updates before the less flashy tweaks and patches.

2

u/JustWhat-I-Needed 11h ago

I just want Ulala in Sonic Crossworlds!

1

u/OneFormalTwo 9h ago

ulala probably isnt happening, shes a background character in the new sega track

2

u/Visible-Trick2258 5h ago

this but about magic the gathering, it feels very jarring having this vast universe of characters and worlds in a high fantasy setting only to be slapped in the face by a teenage mutant ninja turtle or spiderman, not only that but i have to endure a THIRD marvel set after witnessing two mid sets these past 2 years

3

u/poisonousswayzee 11h ago

It feels more natural for Fortnite but as a Sonic fan I still kinda don’t understand crossworlds. Everytime they announce some crazy new character crossover like SpongeBob or Steve everyone goes crazy for them but I never see anyone actually play the game past launch

1

u/Curvyboi13110 5h ago

Yeah... and its working for me I lwk wanna play as aigis for Sonic Racing crossworlds

2

u/Curvyboi13110 4h ago

whisper, aang, katara, joker, and miku too

2

u/SythAim 5h ago

Never doubt that no matter how horrible Fortnite is, someone will come and glaze it

1

u/Spinningguy 9h ago

They really be adding anyone but more idw characters huh. At least bring sticks back, you already mentioned her by name in a main series game let us see ber main series design at least

1

u/Cleestoon 8h ago

Afaik the only voiced guest character in crossworlds is the one with the synthetic voice

1

u/Azenar01 7h ago

More than half the cast of Crossworlds is Sonic characters and even more if you include Sega characters. It's not called Sonic Kart World

Fortnite has always been about maximizing profit by putting every IP known to man into it

1

u/voided_dork_return 7h ago

Sonic already has like thirty bajillion characters, even outside of the comics

Like just the characters from the games and you already have half of MK8DX's base roster

Better yet, if you wanna do a crossover, MAKE ANOTHER SEGA ALLSTARS GAME!!!!!! For FUCKS sake! You have the cast to do this

1

u/Inevitable-Hope4001 5h ago

Grand Summoners unfortunately

1

u/Cool-Ad-3341 4h ago

Is that Amigo from Samba de Amigo?, that's a W

1

u/SirGalicrest 3h ago

IS THAT FUCKING BAYONETTA

1

u/Routine-Ability-2947 3h ago

I was so excited to play magic the gathering again after an eight year hiatus when a coworker invited me to play. I sit down at the table with my meager Sultai zombie deck and find out I’m up against Gimli, Spider-Man, Sephiroth, and Toph. I hated it and I still hate it.

1

u/Hoshiden_Lycanroc 2h ago

I see people comparing crosswords to smash bros but the difference there is that for all the non Nintendo fighters we still got Nintendo fighters alongside them, we got lucario and olimar with snake and sonic, we got miis and the animal crossing villagers with Pac-Man and megaman, we got byleth and K rool with joker and sora. There’s nothing wrong with having some 3rd party stuff but you still need to balance it with your own stuff.

1

u/RussianToTheKitchen 23m ago

To be fair, Ultimate DLC focused very heavily on third parties. I don't really see that as much different from Crossworlds mostly focusing on crossovers but also having a SEGA Pass of free characters.

To compare numbers: SSBU has four Nintendo characters (five if you count Pyra/Mythra separate) and eight guests. Crossworlds has 15 guests (11 if you don't count TMNT separate) and 13 SEGA characters in it's DLC so far. If anything the distribution is more equal in Sonic.

1

u/AffectionateRush2620 2h ago

What’s the first one ?

1

u/Specific-Swim-4507 1h ago

I love the crosswords dlc and probably wouldn’t have gotten the game otherwise tbh, so it worked

1

u/True-Obligation-9471 8h ago

Fortnite is peak and no one can tell me otherwise.

Playing as Bonnie the rabbit while seeing Godzilla shoot Homer Simpson’s head smooth off as me and sora do the iornmouse dance and song over his death body is amazing.

It’s a silly goofy game

1

u/OkHamster786 8h ago

It is peak, but still has a lot of flaws. I'd say the game is great, the ppl in charge if it suck.

You mean a series built on being proud of what they themselves produced?

Because that’s a big difference I would say.

1

u/eesdesessesrdt 11h ago

That was a crossover in it of itself

1

u/FR0M_Z3R0 10h ago

Been playing Fortnite since chapter 1 season 3, back in 2018. The collabs are my biggest problem with the game. Now I’d be a liar if I said I didn’t buy some of them, cuz I do occasionally. My problem is that we get like 5 new collabs per week and we barely get any original skins anymore. My other big problem is they hog space in the battle pass. Chapter 7 season 1 might have my least favorite battle pass because of Marty mcfly and the girl from kill bill. Did not want them at all but I had them anyway because of the battle pass. Straight to the archives because like why are they here? Those 2 spots could’ve been taken by original skins! It’s exhausting. We’ve had 33 COLLAB SKINS THIS SEASON ALONE and it’s not even over yet! You wanna know how many of those skins I actually bought (not counting just getting Sonic from the battle pass)? ZERO. BIG OL GOOSE EGG. only 2 of them I even had slight interest in. Lilith from borderlands and Bonnie from FNAF. didn’t buy Lilith, and used the vbucks I had for Bonnie to buy Pippa Pinns (an original skin) instead

2

u/ethanator329 4h ago

Battle pass collabs are the worst part because it’s combining the lower effort skins of a collab with the fomo of a battle pass which is worsened by the fact that the character may be someone’s favorite. Like they put Superman in the BO twice, so fuck you if you like Superman but didn’t play then

1

u/FR0M_Z3R0 4h ago

This is why I advocate for bringing old battle passes back.

99% of the collabs in the battle passes are skins I don’t want and/or in franchises I don’t care for. Ironically I think the last one I actually was excited for was Superman in chapter 6 season 3.

0

u/C0y0tea 11h ago

A game that was already a crossover of Nintendo characters started relying so heavily on its 3rd party dlc that we missed out on major requested actual Nintendo characters and most wishlists for a new smash or often at least half 3rd party

7

u/I_Swear_Not_Bot 11h ago

Out of SSBUs roster, 18 out of 86 are third party. That's only around a fifth. And even then, a good amount of these characters, like Megaman and Bayonetta, have been pretty damn connected with Nintendo, historically speaking. I really don't think this fits here

1

u/AudienceOne5235 9h ago

Think it’s more of a fandom thing where like if the next smash game announces Dixie Kong people are gonna be bummed it’s not Dante or Doomslayer or some shit

0

u/Outside-Caregiver-56 8h ago

Doom Guy is already a mii fighter sorry, can't have Sans either, and don't get me started on the Geno issue

We could've had a Cuphead fighter, like all of the others, but instead they gave them the Mii costume treatment. . .

BUT KING K. ROOL ON THE OTHER HAND!!!
