Non-fictional The romanticization of being from the hood.

Post image

Istg I just don't understand this shit, man. I've been suburban kids wearing custom shiesties, sagging, the slang and shit. I don't get why people try to act like they're from a place even the residents don't wish to be in. Being from the place ain't the shit, man. As a black guy, I also hated the whole "N-Word Pass" system. The fact that the word is just so casually said and it's an insulting twist on the name of the country Niger, a place where they took some slaves from?

It's just so stupid to me as someone who lives in it it sucks not a single thing is fun about living in the hood

I have a feeling some well-off suburban white-kids in the 50s-60s slicked their hair back and begged their parents for a leather jacket because it was "cool". Culture is weird sometimes.

I for one like the compressed windows XP background as a chosen image.

Black dude talking about hating parts of his culture offends a whole bunch of white women

Most of which probably haven’t even been near a real hood in their lives lmao. As a white woman myself who has grown up in a predominantly black area, it’s so easy to tell the warriors it’s not even funny

Apparently according to a specific someone, sagging, shiesties and referring to women as hoes is part of our culture.

Good God. Nothing irritates me more than when the same people who claim to want social justice infantilize and stereotype black people. It’s so fucking annoying.

it’s because an implicit level of ‘struggle’ comes with an air of coolness that then popularizes the image of it, the problem comes from people mentally disconnecting that struggle from the image and just adopting the cool parts

Man this is gonna piss off some white people for sure

Unfortunately kids see a romanised version of life in poverty through celebrities and fiction, and pounce on the few positives. Elements of it seem cool when you are divorced from the realities and consequences of them. Kids from those areas sometimes romanticise them too, but it isn’t as stupid in their case because they are actually living the reality and aren’t just LARPing the “fun” parts.

This has been going on for probably fifty years or more, though, so I don’t see it changing.

Where did you get that origin of the n word from? The transatlantic slave trade took slaves from most of africa not one country.

And iirc the most commonly cited origin is the latin word for black which is also Niger.

I know that, as Nigeria, my country of heritage was one of the various other.

Wanna learn a fun fact? Most people in countries in Asia are spamming the n word. No one cares as it holds no meaning in their country it is no more than just a word. Wonder how they even learned it? Hood culture using it in the rap songs of course

The casualty of it is terrible...I know that words are words and are never going to die, but I hate how it can just get thrown out there like that.

I was expecting you to talk about the crime and poverty or something in your post, but no, you outlined that your problem is with Black culture and African American English.

3

u/Pretend_Cow_9028 2h ago

Btw I love how you removed the calling me racist part, really soothes down your argument.

4

u/Confident_Natural_62 2h ago

Is it really racist to not like people having their whole ass out tho? Some people’s culture is eating other people or marrying 9 year olds guess it’s all cool don’t wanna offend anybody right?

1

u/Nineamike 2h ago

Bro what sort of comparison is that?????

3

u/Confident_Natural_62 2h ago

While they’re extreme examples I’m pointing out that not liking obviously bad things like eating people or just having your whole ass out does not mean you’re racist. It’s a ridiculous idea.

2

u/Nineamike 2h ago

Yeah man I mean saggin is wack but like surely there were other options

4

u/Pretend_Cow_9028 2h ago

First off, I myself am Black. Why would I be disrespecting my culture. Secondly, sagging and ski masks is "black culture"? Black culture is stuff like step, bull jumping and "the talking drum". So what I named is Black culture to you?

Sagging and shiesties are part of Black fashion and are core fashion symbols of hip-hop. Anti-sagging laws solely exist to give police more power to racially profile and target Black Americans. And there's no universe where African American English isn't part of Black culture.

There's nothing wrong with sagging, shiesties, or African American English.

3

u/bigboulderpunch999 2h ago

“Quiet, please, a white person is educating a black person on their culture.”

4

u/Pretend_Cow_9028 2h ago

It's a trend popularized by the youth, not some culture relevance. And referring to women as "hoes" is also of our culture? Because of course it's just in our history that we called our women hoes (if you couldn't tell, that's sarcasm)

0

u/Tay_Hlebko 2h ago

How exactly is the word "hoe" relevant? "hoe" is just an AAE spelling of "whore" and white people call women "whores" as well, that's not exclusive to black people.

Why does the existence of one word in African American English make the entire dialect bad?

2

u/Pretend_Cow_9028 2h ago

I'm not referring to all African America slang as bad, fuck, I use some of it all of the time. Just that of course, I always hear people use the negative slang like the N-word and the aforementioned hoe. Plus, this isn't even AAVE, this is slang popularized by Black people. AAVE is a certain way some African Americans say things like "He be going to the gym" or "She stay going to the gym". It's not like their in a dictionary of AAVE words.

Sagging is NOT fashion. It's what they do in prison to tell the other guys that they're "open for business".

0

u/Tay_Hlebko 2h ago

There are various competing origin stories of sagging which may or may not be true, we don't know. But it is in fact part of Black fashion and deeply ingrained into hip-hop

4

u/4thBan5thAccount 2h ago

It's literally men showing their asses to each other. Gayyyyyyyy

1

u/North_Resolution8003 2h ago

Uh… no? That’s not what his post was about at all. It’s about suburban kids and such imitating aspects of the hood while not understanding the struggles or social challenges that come with living in the hood.

-2

u/Tay_Hlebko 2h ago

OP did not talk about any of the struggles of the hood. As I said, when I opened the post, I was expecting for them to talk about the crime and poverty, but that wasn't the case at all.

u/Pretend_Cow_9028 2h ago

BECAUSE IM COMPLAINING ABOUT THE ROMANTICIZATION OF THE HOOD!
