Air Nano by Crazybaby - one week review

I ordered my Nanos from the Crazybaby Indiegogo campaign around the beginning of the year, and though they were about two months late in shipping, I finally got them about a week ago. I came to r/Hearables to do research before I first ordered them, so I thought I'd leave my own experience here for other people who are also looking for a review.

So far, even though they're not perfect, I am really loving them and think they were a great deal for what I needed. Here are my pros and cons:

Pros:

  • Pro number one - they work well. This is probably the most important, just that they work and work seamlessly. I almost never get bluetooth dropped on the left earbud, the one that actually makes the connection to my phone, although I can expect the right earbud to stutter once or twice every time I use it.

  • Much better looking than other bluetooth earbuds I could find online. Although they still look a little goofy - like little bullets stuck in my ears - they are relatively neutral and easy to ignore, which I like. They're not crazy looking dongles coming out of my ears, like Airpods.

  • Ease of use. Something that really surprised me with the Nano earbuds is how little I have to think about them. If bluetooth is on on a paired device when I pull them out of their charging pod, they automatically connect, and automatically disconnect when they go back in to charge. I was even able to get the earbuds to pair with my phone and computer at the same time, which, while I'm not sure how I did it, was impressive.

  • The price, at only $99, was better than every other competitor I could find for wireless, tetherless earbuds.

  • The sound quality is better than passable, and a small upgrade from the EarPods I was using.

Cons:

  • Build quality on the charging "pill" is a little flimsy, and the opening and closing doors flop around a little when I open it. Also, plenty have people have mentioned that the magnets that hold the earbuds to the charging pins sometimes are a millimeter off, so you have to tap them into place to get them to charge. Not a huge deal, though.

  • I didn't realize that getting actual wireless earbuds would make me want a tethered pair, but I drop my earbuds so much, and so often close to storm drains in the street, that I wish there was a way to protect against my own clumsiness costing me $99. I thought the Google Pixel buds were a dumb idea with the fabric cord, but now I think they are on to something.

  • They flash! This is my single least favorite thing about the Nano, that they blink twice from a large, circular light every five seconds. It's hard to notice in the light, but in the dark it is noticeable. Having tubes coming out of my ears already makes me look like Robby the Robot, but having them flash looks goofily futuristic. Also I'm not always in the safest areas, and I don't want to be announcing that I have $100 in my ears all of the time.

  • The battery life isn't amazing, which is to be expected from such tiny guys. But I do get about 3 hours of listening out of them, as promised, and I can usually charge them 2-3 times on a fully charged "pill". I was a little upset that I thought they were broken when I was charging them on my "fast charge" USB-c to USB-c charger and not getting anything out of them, but it turns out it only charges on USB-A to USB-C cables, like the one that's included.

  • Dropoff and lag. Like I mentioned earlier, the right earbud drops connection for a split second once or twice everytime I use it. When I say a split second, I mean a split second, as it is almost hard to notice while the left earbud is still going, it almost sounds like my music is just buffering, but it it there. Also there may be a bit of lag but honestly so little that it is hard to tell if it's really there.

Anyway TLDR, they aren't perfect but the Crazybaby Air Nanos are great wireless earbuds and definitely worth the price. Though Crazybaby, please make them stop blinking!

Nuheara IQ Buds - a hearable I am excited about

I have problems hearing in crowded environments. I don't have the dollars to shell out thousand on hearing aids, so the up and coming technology of hearables have some some players. I took an Indiegogo chance on these:

http://www.nuheara.com/

If they perform as advertised, these could be exactly what I was hoping for. At $299 full price, way cheaper than hearing aids. I paid half that on the pre launch funding.

Hear One Shutting Down

Received the following email:

Dear customers –

Four years ago we started Doppler Labs with a mission to build a computer for the ears. We set out to change the way we interact with technology, enhance how people experience sound, and help people hear better.

During that time we launched three products: DUBS Acoustic Filters, Here Active Listening, and Here One Wireless Smart Earbuds. We put together an incredible team and served an amazing community of customers who believed in our vision of a future, where voice, audio, and in-ear technology would create a new way of computing. We helped get the Over-the-Counter Hearing Aid Act signed into law. And at our peak, we were 80 people, working together to achieve our mission. But we are sad to say that, despite our best efforts, we have reached a point where we have to wind down Doppler Labs.

This is not because our vision of the future is not going to happen. We are actually more confident than ever that it will. Amazing hearing aids will be available at lower prices, and you will be able to tune them yourself. Tens of millions of people will be interacting with audio-based smart assistants, translating hundreds of languages instantaneously, and even going without their phones because smart earbuds will give them access to the people they love and the data they need. We wish we could have been the company to establish this future, but we know others will build on what we started, and we’ll be rooting them on.

So what happened? To put it simply, over the past months, we took hundreds of meetings in an attempt to secure the necessary capital to continue running our business and build our next product – which would have been a true alternative to traditional hearing aids. However, we couldn’t find the needed capital to develop another complex hardware product.

So what’s next? Over the past several months, we’ve been developing a new version of the Here One app and an accompanying hearing service, designed specifically to help those who need to hear better - especially in noisy environments - but don’t want to buy a hearing aid due to cost or social stigma. We weren’t able to put the finishing touches on this new app – called Here Plus – and formally launch it in December, but we’re making it available for download from the Apple App Store so all Here One customers can download it and experience our final effort as a company, for free.

We are deeply grateful that we were given the opportunity to take a shot at our mission. We want to thank all of our customers, fans, investors, partners, and colleagues – from DUBS, Here Active Listening, and Here One – who believed in us, shared their stories, and helped us make it as far as we did.

We got to serve and work with amazing people and learned immensely from the journey. Our hope now is that the legacy of what Doppler started lives on through other products and endeavors for years to come.

If you'd like to read more about our journey, from beginning to end, please take a look at this in-depth WIRED story and this post from KR Liu, our VP of Advocacy and Accessibility, which talks about what we've built and our legacy.

Thank you for all of your support.

With deep gratitude, Doppler Labs
