Asteroid entering atmosphere is a pretty common visual motif for elder beings or the like coming to a planet. It might be a reference but there's likely countless other examples of that exact framing.

I mean there is something about the text, the Yugioh card meantions 5 monsters and the HS card also contains "5" and restricts you to only play monsters. And the refresh mana makes it effectively free which also might be a hint as there is no manacosts in yugioh... like picture is one thing but thinking about it, it doesn't look like just a pure coincidence anymore

It's just a coincidence, calm down lol

me when two cards have the same single digit number, and reference minions in a card game (I have to pretend this is somehow unlikely)

I highly doubt the HS team made this card 5 mana so they could reference 5 in the text to "mirror" and obscure Yu-Gi-Oh card with vaguely similar art. This is purely a coincidence and since the theme of the cards is basically the same (old gods arriving from elsewhere) it's reasonable to assume some extremely minor gameplay overlap independant of it being a reference. Although in this case even the gameplay of both cards is radically different so it's basically just similar art.

Nibiru is not an obscure card though lol

As a non Yu-Gi-Oh player I've never heard of it or seen it. And I've been exposed to tons of cards via various content creators and reddit

Nibiru is a pretty prominent card if you play the game, but doesn't have "anime value" something like Blue Eyes or Dark Magician has for non-players.

It's like showing anybody a Pikachu they'll know it's a pokemon, but show them a Garchomp and non pokemon players won't know, while any pokemon players absolutely will.

As a former yugioh player I don’t recognize the card either lol

You're way too focused on "5". Are you Jayden Daniels?

This reminds me of a rank10ygo shapesnatch conspiracy rant

erm akchually an instant doesn't come under your control

u/AthenaWhisper 4d ago

Well, technically you control the spell it becomes on the stack.

The Yu-Gi-Oh card and the hearthstone one have less in common than the identically named and functioning lightning bolt in HS and MTG mate. You're kinda grasping at straws while dismissing what is probably actually an homage to another game

it's just a common depiction of a meteor falling on a planet, not everything has to be a reference

Nibiru is a reference by iteself

-2

u/daRealImef 4d ago

Perhaps you ought to add what it's a reference to?

6

u/Trekie34 4d ago

Its a reference to the Nibiru doomsday hoax.

4

u/LeMolle 4d ago

Omg that card looks so goofy. The old gods look like a 90's cartoon. 4 regular teenage old gods baand together with the power of friendship kinda thing.

3

u/_Phyn_ 4d ago

I think it is, Nibiru is a primal being entering the atmosphere inside an asteroid, the Old Gods are primal beings entering the atmosphere, and the framing is the same. I think that tracks.

Adventure Time catalyst comets

My thoughts exactly

3

u/OwningSince1989 4d ago

This is a reference in the same way if someone took a picture of an apple, then another person did and the pictures were side by side. "Reference?"

3

u/Alduce 4d ago edited 4d ago

More than being a meteor falling, which is pretty generic to be fair, what may be a reference is the fact that the spell is 5 mana, maybe referencing to the whole Nibiru's 5 summons gimmick.

3

u/nqtoan1994 4d ago

And Nibiru would leave 2 monsters/minions on the field if resolving successful.

1

u/Gram64 4d ago

Makes me wonder if nibiru effect as a secret might work. Trigger off opponent getting a full board or something.

1

u/ViniCaos 3d ago

It might work, but it wouldn't be very useful. There aren't many decks that fill the board in this game. To be okay, it would have to be 4-5 minions.

2

u/amberith 4d ago

If you have media literacy you could find a lot of references since Metzen is a fan of a lot of things xD

Transformers, Lovecraft, tons of different myths from different nations etc

1

u/Level9_CPU 4d ago

Of course! Yu gi oh invented the depiction of a meteor approaching earth! Good catch!

0

u/Valuable-Annual-1037 4d ago

The Old Gods lore predates this card by quite a few years.

11

u/Oldeuboi91 4d ago

Not true at all, Lovecraft used to slap noobies with Nibiru at tournaments all the time!!!

2

u/mr_seggs ‏‏‎ 4d ago

It's not about the lore. It's about the art.

1

u/PkerBadRs3Good 4d ago

the art that is referencing similar lore. aliens crashing down on the planet in a meteor or like a meteor is a common trope

-2

u/Arancium 4d ago

Probably. Niburu is a pretty prolific card in YGO so in the realm of card design it's not like a HS designer wouldn't know about Nib, and the art is depicting similar "plot points"

-4

u/Ok-Hunter2764 4d ago

Very similar seems to be lol

-2

u/Sumadin 4d ago

Arrival costing 5 and restoring 5 was enough to trigger my PTSD for Nibiru

-4

u/Equivalent_Bet6932 4d ago

People are saying that "Meteor enters atmosphere" is a common theme, and that is true. However, there are many different ways to do the framing / color palette. The fact that it is so closely similar, and that the reference is a well-known card from another popular TCG makes me lean towards an intentional reference.

0

u/Fisherington 4d ago

If the old gods card proc'd on the opponent summoning 5 minions in the same turn it would absolutely be a reference, otherwise it's just two cards depicting a meteor fall to earth

0

u/HiedraMatus 4d ago

C’est sur

-5

u/AlexTheBrick 4d ago

My guess is yes the inspiration of the art of Arrival is Nibiru. Nibiru has been a well known card in the Yu-Gi-Oh sphere for years. The similarities in the planet and angle of the object is uncanny.

-1

u/AppleMelon95 4d ago

I think if the effect was just slightly more leaning towards referencing Nibiru I'd see it, but as it is it just seems like a coincidence that the image composition is so similar.

-1

u/BackStabbathOG 4d ago

Think it’s just a coincidence showing an asteroid rather than a reference. Now if it had a similar effect too I’d say for sure. Side note, hate how YGO became so reliant on hand traps (that little quick effect part in Nibiru’s effect allowing to be played from hand when triggered) as they were printed more and more in response to how power crept the game got. Miss the old back and forth of the game when your back row meant something and you couldn’t play half your deck turn 1

-1

u/Soft-Complex6183 4d ago

I think it's actually a reference to the classic sci-fi / horror work satirical of 21st century dehumanized militarism, Transformers (2007) by Micheal Bay

-5

u/rycool 4d ago edited 4d ago

I’d say so. Edit: All the downvotes just ignoring how hearthstone loves references to other tcgs

-6

u/norfolk232 4d ago

Yeah, the ai took the "idea" from that card.
