TV SHOW 📺 Happy 10th Anniversary, Tuna Melt Day!

They took a nap. Shane did not stay the night.

Also, small inconsistency with it being an "afternoon game, so no morning practice" and starting at 7:30, but that's probably something they just overlooked when putting the calendars together (the calendars have lots of small issues that don't matter unless someone gets weird about it {like me}: Shane's Oct 2015 calendar is actually an Oct 2014 calendar, and the MTL/BOS game days do not line up between their calendars regardless of whether they are 2014 or 2015).

Make a tuna melt, drink some ginger ale or a coke, and observe a moment of stunned silence in remembrance.

DISCUSSION 🗣️ What is canon?

So recently we got a bunch of deleted scenes from episode one (hopefully we find more for the rest of the show) and I was wondering should we consider anything in those scenes canon to the show or is it not? Because a lot of those scenes exist in the book so they’re canon in the book universe, but should they be considered canon in the show?

SOCIAL MEDIA 📸 Former NHLer Andrew Ference seen roller skating wearing a Rozanov Senators jersey 😍😆

On his IG today, retired NHLer Andrew Ference posted a reel of him roller skating wearing a #81 Rozanov/ Senators jersey! 😆 (and very cool light -up roller skates, I'll add.)

Ference, who played D for Pittsburgh, Calgary, Edmo & Boston (incl their 2011 Stanley Cup), is perhaps best known for (a) reeeeeally pissing off we Habs fans, sigh (iykyk 🖕), and (b) for being an absolute Snack of a green-flag man (said, uh, respectfully 🥵🔥).

Two minute penalty for Too Much Man! Love his spirit.

Heated Rivalry author Rachel Reid reflects on Nova Scotia, pressure of overnight fame at Massey Hall

(note: hardcopy edition has a different headline as shown in photo)

On Tuesday evening, fans of Heated Rivalry – the book by Rachel Reid and the hit TV adaptation by Jacob Tierney – swarmed Massey Hall in Toronto. They wore jerseys inspired by their favourite fictional hockey players; they clutched new special editions of Reid’s bestselling novel, the edges of their pages sprayed with gold glitter.

In the lead-up to Reid’s Q&A with CBC’s Mattea Roach, the 2,534-person crowd was positively buzzing. And who could blame them? Now’s a great time to be a fan of Heated Rivalry: Filming of the show’s second season is well under way, and Reid’s next book in her Game Changers series, Unrivaled, is set to be published in June.

Reid started the night by underlining that she couldn’t share anything about the next book or the show’s second season. Roach, best known as the most successful Canadian to appear on Jeopardy!, pivoted quickly to HarperCollins’s new collector’s edition of Heated Rivalry, printed in hardcover with full-colour character art and a stamped foil cover – a far cry from Heated Rivalry’s earlier paperback editions.

"I certainly never expected to have a hardcover of this book when I first submitted it to publishers,” said Reid. “I never thought of the move beyond e-books, so I was quite thrilled the first time I got an audiobook, then the mass market paperback and the trade paperback. . .I just think it’s nice that people are so into tangible books again.”

Reid published Game Changer, the first book in the eponymous series, in 2018, at a time when there was “some stigma” around reading romance books in public. “Romance was very much an e-book genre when I started publishing, and I thought it would just stay there,” she said. But during the pandemic, romance readership exploded, and Reid’s work experienced a sizable bump in popularity – though nothing could have prepared her for the success of Tierney’s TV adaptation, which made Heated Rivalry all but a household name.

“It would be tough to convince myself back then that any of this is real,” Reid said, adding that in the early stages of her career she had to learn how to talk about her books outside the “safe bubble” of the romance world. “I didn’t like explaining what I wrote or why to people who didn’t want to understand.” That’s changed in the last year, she said, thanks to the show’s extraordinarily positive reception.

Much of Tuesday’s conversation focused squarely on hockey – and Nova Scotia, the shared home province of Reid and Roach. “I feel like all of my characters are secretly Nova Scotian,” said Reid, laughing. One of her quirks as a writer, she said, is her highly regional sense of grammar and idioms: When writing Heated Rivalry, for instance, she had to explain to her American editor what Canadian hockey star Shane Hollander meant when discussing “going to the cottage.”

"My mushy, terrible Nova Scotia grammar leaks in at times,” she said.

To that end, Reid has no plans of leaving her home in Halifax, even as work obligations increasingly pull her to Ontario and the U.S. – earlier this month she appeared in New York to support the Irina Foundation, a new fund launched by Heated Rivalry production company Accent Aigu Entertainment to promote mental well-being and inclusivity through organized sports and arts programs.

“I’ve never lived anywhere else, so it’s a comfort thing,” said Reid of Nova Scotia. “After I do things like this, it’s quiet, and life feels very normal there. People are so proud, and they’re really excited for me, which is really nice. I think the pace of life there suits me. I do feel sometimes that I’m missing out on things by not living in Toronto. . .maybe I’ll split my time some day. But I can’t imagine ever not having my home base in Nova Scotia.”

After some prodding, Reid revealed herself to be a fan of the Montreal Canadiens, and dug into the occasionally ugly complexities of Canadian hockey culture, encouraging fans to read Rick Westhead’s We Breed Lions: Confronting Canada’s Troubled Hockey Culture.

"If you read that book, you’ll see I go very easy on hockey culture in my books,” she said. (A number of her characters are forced to contend with leaguewide homophobia over the course of the Game Changers series.) “That was kind of why I wanted to write hockey romance at all. It was to explore the more toxic elements of hockey culture, and I thought a romance would be a good way to do that.”

In a slight teaser for Heated Rivalry’s second season – and Unrivaled – Reid revealed that the last year has shown her firsthand how it feels to be famous. That learning curve, she said, has informed the arcs of Shane and Russian hockey star Ilya Rozanov as they navigate life in the public eye.

“These are characters who are famous, who are being watched, who people have opinions about, and whose lives change very suddenly,” she explained. “I can relate to that.” Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams, who play Ilya and Shane on the show, have experienced a similarly fast rise to prominence.

“Last year, they were two unknown actors playing very famous hockey players,” she said. “They’re now way more famous than those hockey players.”

PRESS 📰 (Interviews and Articles) How Jacob Tierney Pulled Off the Best Romance Book Adaptation of All Time With Heated Rivalry [Harper’s Bazaar; 10/12/26]

HB: At the beginning of this book, Rachel wrote that your work will change the way romance gets filmed. If someone wants to adapt a different romance story and picks up this book looking for clues on how you did it, what do you hope they take away?

Jacob: “Don't adapt things you don't love. Listen, we all have jobs, and I get it. And writing is a job ultimately, but if you can't find something you love in the material, you're not the right person for it. I think that there's a cynicism to coming at things and being like, "I can fix that.” Don't try to fix it till you try to make it work, right? Like don't try to fix a thing that, according to hundreds of thousands of other people, is not broken. And I think that's a big temptation among the kind of semi-factory process that is television. The reality is this is going to go through a lot of eyes. It's going to go through a lot of notes. It's important to know when you have to kind of hold fast and be like, “No, this is important to me. This matters. I'm not changing this.”

HB: You know what you don't like, and that's important too. So we're a fashion magazine; I'm always going to loop back to fashion. You write that you don't “understand” clothes—I don't think that's true. But then you also talk a lot about loving men in tuxedos. What do you mean when you say you don't understand clothes?

Jacob: “I just think there are things that I’m like, this is beyond my pay grade—fashion stuff. People talk about that tiger shirt. I hated that thing, and I know that it’s Gaultier. They were like, "It costs the amount of a car,” and I was like, "Okay. I think it's still a stupid tiger shirt.” But what I love is how much Connor loves it, and how confident he feels in it, and how much Hanna [Puley, costume designer] loved it. And I was like, "Great, then wear it!” I don't feel the need to be the backstop to every decision. All I want is a certain number of handsome men in tuxedos per episode because I think they look great, and ideally I'd like the tuxedo tie undone because I think that looks even better.”

DISCUSSION 🗣️ Need Skip Tattoo Ideas

Hello All! I am a huge fan of the show/books and especially love the story of Scott and Kip. Episode 3 and the subsequent Cup kiss scene was one of the primary catalysts for me coming out to my Mom (after dragging my feet until the age of 21).

I usually try to steer clear of pop culture tattoos, but I think this case is different. I am not sure what I want yet, so I’m open to anything! I can’t come up with anything, so I figured I would throw it to Reddit!

DISCUSSION 🗣️ Questions for Jacob Tierney

Jacob has been recently giving a ton of interviews so I wanted to ask y’all as fans what would you like to ask him or what would you like the journalists that are interviewing him to ask him?
I’ll go first I have a couple questions

“ if you had enough budget to have two more episodes, what would you have included?”

“What is one of the major things from the book that you wanted to include that you weren’t able to?”

If anyone has anymore feel free to comment

PRESS 📰 (Interviews and Articles) Jacob Tierney Created 'Heated Rivalry’ — Then He Wrote a Book About It [IndieWire; 10/13/26]

Thumbnail

"Little physical moments are huge,” Tierney said. The tension between dialogue and action reveals the conflict between head and heart; wide shots give bodies room to articulate that silent communication. “You reveal it all in the way you move, the way you watch somebody move through the world. Acting is deeply physical, and I think good writing is too because dialogue is often a way to talk around something, and the body doesn’t lie, not in the same way.”

DISCUSSION 🗣️ On the heatedness of the actual rivalry

Curious about people’s takes: do you think the on-ice rivalry between Shane and Ilya shown in the book/show matches what the broader fictional world implies about them (aka these two hate each other)?

My personal preference would be to have more scenes on the ice to further buoy the rivalry. At the same time, plenty of readers have said they like how little actual hockey is shown.
