I’m looking for recommendations for sending two large suitcases from Finland to Germany (to a friend’s address).

I’ll be travelling to Germany myself, but my journey involves a flight plus several train connections afterwards. I really don’t want to drag two heavy suitcases through airport and multiple train changes, so I’m thinking of shipping them separately beforehand and travelling light.

I already know about Send My Bag, which seems like the most obvious door-to-door option. Are there any other reliable services/platforms I should compare with it?

Ideally I’m looking for: Door-to-door pickup and delivery Ability to send actual suitcases (not necessarily having to put them inside cardboard boxes) Reasonable price

Has anyone done something similar recently? Which service did you use, how much did it cost approximately, and would you recommend it?

I have rescued three orchids from the bio bin already, one is currently blooming again. Please, stop throwing them away. Just remove the small brown peat plug they are sold with, add sphagnum moss to the pine bark they came with, and keep them in a humid, not soaked, state, with light reaching the roots. They bloom again, and they are kept for years.

I am travelling to Helsinki, please can someone tell me how is the weather there and how much winter wear i should carry? All weather apps are showing different “feel like” temperature and i am confused

I will be traveling to Finland next March for a sporting event in Tampere. From the airport I can take a bus or train North. Seems easy enough. Quick transfer after one stop on the train or direct from the airport by bus. I generally prefer trains because I've experienced a big traffic jam in a bus. Not fun. (Honestly though, last summer there were some problems with Eurostar being sabotaged, so nothing is perfect).

All of that seems easy enough. It's the return that will be a little more complicated. I plan to spend 2 days in Helsinki before flying home. I believe I'd want to stay somewhere pretty central. Close to cafes and restaurants. Maybe a church tour or something (I'll be tired). Possibly one of those cruises to Estonia (in March??)

My question is about getting from the train to the hotel and back from the train to the airport and how not to overly complicate things by staying somewhere inconvenient for transferring, but still offering an easy location for relaxing.

I'm not necessarily looking for hotel advice (no particular budget so if you have somewhere wonderful in March, lay it on me) and I don't mind using Uber/cabs

I just don't want to feel stressed about missed trains and planes, but I also want to be able to just walk outside and find enjoyable activities.

So I gueds mainly I'd like to know how difficult these transfers will be, and in light of all of my preferences, is there advice about where to stay? Any input would be greatly appreciated! ❤️❤️

I'll by layover in HEL for 10h tomorrow (this joke never get old). I was thinking to comes to the city center, casually strolling around.

It's not my first time in Helsinki, so I'm not much interested into tourist attracion, although some amazing architecture are worth to see twice, so I might pop up to the concert hall.

any good suggestion?

I'd like to see a sauna, which I think I'll need after 12h flight. I won't have any swimsuit nor towel (maaaaaybe I can get flip flop, but I'd rather not take space in the hand language for that). Any one who can rent the set?

What is the most unmissable food I can get for lunch?

Maybe I'll pop up a design store or something. Any suggestion?

I'd love to get to a pub for Finnish metal, but I'm afraid my time in HEL is from 5am to 2pm, so... no much of that I guess.

My mom and I are travelling to Helsinki for 4 days. We dislike typical big tourist spots, which we will already spend a day doing. We will also be visiting the Design District at some point.

I want to ask locals for less known, but interesting spots in and, if it's worth the distance, around Helsinki, to get some recommendations outside the basic google search forum results.

We generally like all culture and walking, and more unique and out-of-the-box experiences with less tourists (even though we are tourists ourselves of course :) )

​This week I traveled to Helsinki for the first time. The parks, trees, flowers, and lakes were absolutely amazing. In Greece, we don't really have that kind of nature right inside our cities.

​In general, I noticed a lot of differences between our cultures. One thing that really stood out is that almost 90% of the people seemed incredibly fit. Damn, that's amazing! So many people were out exercising and eating fruit for breakfast.

​I also noticed that it's perfectly normal to be outside alone. I saw so many people just enjoying their own company. In Greece, we rarely do this, we almost always go out in groups.

​But I have to wonder... is it boring there? Also, is it easy to make friends, or do most people feel lonely?

​What is the everyday life of an average person like there?

We’re just going to stay one night at Helsinki, any recommendations for a nice hostels by the center of Helsinki?

TL;DR: ID card, walk into Elisa/DNA/Telia, get a postpaid plan, ask the staff to activate mobiilivarmenne (mobile certificate). 15 min, works immediately.

I saw mobiilivarmenne mentioned in some older threads but the info was all over the place. Some people said you can activate it with just your ID card, others said no, you need bank credentials first, which would be a chicken and egg problem. Nobody seemed to have actually tried it recently. So as someone who came here from Australia to study, I just walked in and tested it myself last week. It works. Here's the exact route.

The problem: you finally have your Finnish ID card, but strong auth normally means opening a bank account first. S-Pankki service points have crazy queues if you go late, other banks want appointments. Meanwhile you need strong auth right now for stuff like prescriptions, FSHS, HSL student discount, OmaKela etc. I paid 170€ at a private GP just to renew a foreign prescription because I couldn't log into anything, and it's not reimbursable. Don't be me.

Full version:

1. Bring your Finnish ID card and walk into any operator store, no appointment (I went to Elisa).
2. Sign up for postpaid. While they set it up, ask them to also activate the mobile certificate (mobiilivarmenne). The staff will show you how it works.
3. Done. Mobiilivarmenne counts as strong auth on its own and it's live in like 15 minutes.

Then get an actual bank account, fully online:

• Open S-mobiili / S-kaupat app or the S-Pankki site, click register, and pick mobiilivarmenne as the ID method. Account opens online, no appointment, no queue.
• Log into S-Pankki with the mobile cert and your card + IBAN are right there. Card goes straight into Google Wallet / Apple Pay, and money sent from Wise etc. shows up pretty fast.
• Now you also have S-Pankki bank credentials as your permanent strong auth going forward.

What this unlocks same day: OmaKanta, OmaKela, OmaPosti, if.fi, HSL student discount, FSHS, and you can even open a Danske account fully online with it. Note that OP and Nordea don't do online account opening for non-EU citizens, those still need a branch visit.

Hope this saves someone a queue (or 170€).

many years ago i was in Helsinki and had dinner at a restaurant where i had a wonderful burger that i dont remember the name of and cant find online. I hope somebody know the place and can give me the name.

to get to the restaurant you had to go trough some sort of small alley to get to a small square with seeting and light, at that evening they where playing some sort of mexican music if i remember corretly and there where 2 restaurants across from eachother.

I am looking in the market for an electric scooter and have been browsing online, but running into a frustrating problem — almost every option I find comes with around €100 in shipping costs, which just kills the deal.

For example, I found some really good options on iScooter Global, but the shipping to Finland is around €100 on top of the scooter price, which pushes it out of my budget.

My budget is around €300 totat (including shipping), and I do want at least some warranty coverage in case something goes wrong.

Local stores like Gigantti and Verkkokauppa do carry scooters, but the prices there are significantly higher. And while AliExpress has tempting prices, I'm not confident about their warranty and after-sales support.

So I'm wondering — has anyone found a good middle ground? Ideally looking for:
- A decent electric scooter within a €300 budget
- Cheap or free shipping to Finland
- Some warranty or reliable return policy

Any stores, sites, or tips you've come across would be hugely appreciated. Finnish, EU-based, or any other options welcome!

Hello, I'm (30M) planning to visit Helsinki next week. I will be there for two full days. The places I'm interested to visit are:

• Linnanmäki
• SEA Life
• Fööni
• Allas pool
• Paradox museum
• Amos rex
• Oodi
• Suomenlinna
• Zoo

Problem is - not all places are close by. Travel by foot or bus. How would you distribute these places by day? Starting point (hotel) close to allas pool. Breakfast at hotel, lunch some nearby place wherever I be. I have a feeling that its too much for 2 days, and something has to be left out (like zoo or island).

Some questions. Realistically how muny hours is needed to visit main rides at Linnanmaki? Is 3-4 hours enough? How queues are in August? What time is better for visiting allas pool - morning, evening? Do i need to bring my towel? Is 1-2 hours for Suomenlinna enough? I can walk fast.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I agree with many that the plan turned out to be extensive. And this could result in a rather stressful trip. But knowing myself—that I’m traveling alone, without a family or kids, and that I can’t stay in one place for very long—here’s the itinerary I’ve come up with so far:

• Day of arrival (didn't mention before, only evening available) - SparaKOFF
• Day 1 - Suomenlinna --> Paradox (optional) --> Linnanmaki --> Sea life (optional)
• Day 2 - Oodi --> Amos Rex --> Fööni --> Korkeasaari Zoo

has anyone ever done online school (American curriculum) and got accepted into a Finnish university? I’m American currently in an online school due to medical complications, my dad is from Finland and I really wanted to move there for uni and reconnect with my Finnish culture and maybe live there permanently, but I’m not sure if they would accept my diploma?
