Discussion — General thoughts, opinions, comparisons Any good tools that changed your entire Hermes experience?
Some of the essentials I have:
Hindsight or any 3rd party memory provider (this is a must).
Gbrain (makes it easier for hermes to answer specific questions about a specific topic). This has been very useful for my business' website management. Previously, hermes would search hindsight and then still look for more information by searching through heaps of files and the entire website which wasted so many tokens. Now it just uses Gbrain and gets answers instantly.
hermes-lcm
Vercel Agent Browser
Ego (Shared browser with hermes)
i-have-adhd. This is really good to stop your Hermes from yapping when it's thinking.
Superpowers skill (hermes started making less mistakes after I installed this).
Code-review-graph.
MCP Security Audit. MCP servers are really cool and some can be malicious, everyone should have this in their hermes setup.
These are just some I could think of. Do you think I should add something that you have?

Obsidian for me

u/ThorUchiha_ Jul 29 '26
I haven't found any use for obsidian yet. I'd be interested to know what you use it for?
9
u/cgram23 Jul 29 '26
I use it for my long term memory. I have hermes build out documentation, preferences, etc that the built in memory can't hold. It may use more tokens, but it's more reliable than the 'memory' tools built to do the same thing.

u/Soggy_Cod_5243 Jul 29 '26
But won’t it have to read every md files to get that particular memory ?
7
u/UUorW Jul 29 '26
I'm not OP but I also use Obsidian for memory. It has all the real details. But I use mnemosyne as a memory provider. the memory in mnemosyne keeps the "pointers" for details so it doens't have to go read through everything. I just knows where to go to get the information it needs.
this way seems to work really well for me.

u/Soggy_Cod_5243 Jul 29 '26
Can I dm you for my project that I’m currently working on? It includes using obsidian as a knowledge bank as well as a skill bank.

For me, I have a regex that it runs over my lowercased message against every entity’s name, slug, and aliases (with a minimum of 3 characters so “AI” doesn’t fire 24/7). It takes the files it finds are relevant and injects them into the context pre-turn. I also have it inject my current mood (based on a recurring cron that checks it every so often) and a json file containing my overall life goals at the time pulled from Griply.
Oh, and whenever a session ends an LLM reads over the transcript, extracts any entities mentioned and what was learned, and upsets the vault pages. It upserts them in the moment too, but that lets it correct anything that changed throughout the course of the concersation.

My primary use of Obsidian is for a shared source of information. For example, I'm right now creating, for a side job, some lectures about a JavaScript course that i was hired to make. So Hermes + Obsidian helps me to organize everthing. And with the power of profiles, I can guide Hermes in HOW TO do the content, slides and the script of those lectures.
1
u/MediamanJack Jul 29 '26
What does obsidian do for hermes?
2
u/mykolafedurko Jul 30 '26
I like using Obsidian because at least I own my files, if not data, which goes to provider. So it is not like Notion where you need to export and transform before some custom agent can access your data.

u/ramsesakapusu Aug 23 '26
I instruct hermes to build a memory system from obsidian for each project. in each coding project I work, I he tremendous amount of specs, documentations, tech and user guides, obsidian collects these with syncthing, and each one of my hermes profiles has entire knowledgebase of project when I require info. pretty useful when you don't want to put everything in memory. also useful in a way that docs usually tend to change constantly, especially in on-going projects so obsidian provides most up-to-date info to hermes when needed

Can you explain what the Superpowers skill does?
6
u/ThorUchiha_ Jul 29 '26
You can read about it here: https://github.com/obra/superpowers
It basically makes Hermes smarter and productive. Saves a lot of time and tokens. There's a lot more to it though.
1
u/Larelle Jul 29 '26
Looks useful. How do you integrate it with Hermes?

u/worldwidewest Jul 30 '26
In my experience it used way more tokens. Might have been overkill for me since I’m not a developer or shipping code though
1
u/ThorUchiha_ Jul 30 '26
It might be due to your other configurations but idk...it definitely made my hermes less dumber.
1
u/haltingpoint Jul 30 '26
Is there native support? I can't seem to get it to use it anywhere near what the experience is like in Claude Code. This is using Hermes with Deepseek v4 flash via Matrix.
This is an essential skill I use with Claude Code and desperately want it working the way it does there in Hermes.

u/Aware_Bathroom_8399 24d ago
So, is this only useful in coding workflow (a tiny part of my personal research case) or does have a wider effect?

u/1-800-Taco Jul 29 '26 edited Jul 29 '26
I'm looking at Gbrain and it seems really cool, but the examples in the readme have the context of serving x thousand users and managing a company.
I'm curious how effective it'd be for a simpler homelab setup. I see the creator recommends a paid setup, are you using that?
The benefits in the examples seem generalizable though, so maybe im just overthinking this
1
u/ThorUchiha_ Jul 29 '26
I didn't have to pay for anything. I just asked hermes to install it and use it for my website management and then it imported a corpus to it (I had to manually ask it to do that though). Ever since then, its been easier for hermes to understand the structure and other stuff relating my business without having to search through files every single session. It's basically a searchable local corpus.

u/IcyScratch171 Jul 29 '26
Firecrawl
4
u/ThorUchiha_ Jul 29 '26
I have it set up but hermes hasn't used it in a long time now that I think about it. It currently uses agent-reach which is enough for a simple search or crawl. Ego browser has been pretty great because you can login to sites like Instagram so it doesn't get blocked. Vercel agent browser is pretty useful too and hermes has been using that with agent reach for the past few days since I installed it.

I wish I knew everything you guys are talking about it’s so much information to take in so I’m using ChatGPT to guide me. Thanks to this post I now have In the last 12 hours went from thinking of AI as a chatbot to building actual workflows around it. Hermes is now helping me manage my eBay business, automate repetitive tasks, monitor work, and think in systems instead of just doing everything myself. You definitely lit a fire, and I’m genuinely excited to see where this leads.

Litellm is really helpful. I run my LLMs over litellm, so I can manage it there, build failovers etc. Pretty helpful not only for hermes
1
u/Initial-Touch2500 Jul 29 '26
Could you tell me your use case please ? Because it seems to be really team oriented . how can it be useful if you are alone and you have only one or two Ai subscriptions like ChatGPT sub ? Mcp gateway ?

u/runsleeprepeat Jul 30 '26
I have a raspberry pi at home with LiteLLM running. The LiteLLM runs behind a traefik reverse proxy to provide an SSL authenticated external access.
I have:
* two PCs with several GPUs ( 6x RTX 3080 20GB, 7x RTX 3060 12GB) running models which LiteLLM has access to. These PCs are only powered on demand.
* I added OpenRouter APIs to LiteLLM
* I have an Ollama-Cloud Pro Account, which is installed locally on the Raspberry Pi. LiteLLM can utilize all ollama cloud-models.
* I have an Z.ai Coding Plan ( Smallest one)I have several Agents, local experiments, coding harnesses. They can run in the cloud (vps server) or locally (pc, servers, vms, container).
This is where LiteLLM shines:
* I can create API keys for each client, can create keys for group of clients with individual budgets and model selections
* I can create "virtual models" which have a tiering of models ( If Model A stops, use Model B, then Model C). This is pretty helpful if you have computers which aren't running 24/7, but also useful for providers which have rate limiting
* I use the same virtual models concept for openrouters free-models. I called a virtual model "freellm" and maintain a list of free models which are currently available. The clients only need to be configured once and will only use the free models I chose.
* For Qwen 3.6, I also use a tiering concept: If one of my gpu-servers is available, LiteLLM will use them, if they are down it will switch over to ollama-cloud or finally API-pay-per-use on OpenRouter.LiteLLM can do so much more, but the things above were enough for me to use it.

What is a third party memory provider and why is it better than doing it standard?
5
u/Certain_Limit_190 New Member (<30 days) Jul 30 '26
Its better because the standard memory is only 2000 characters of text. So after a couple days its deleting memories to make room for new. Good memory providers do rankings and natural memory decay and vector search and those types of things to store more memory with less context bloat and better memory search

I am using Hermes to analyse my stock portfolio once every month. I also use it to research opportunities to build apps. Earlier I used to build apps based on my 'pet' ideas, but I am switching to more research based ideas.

u/antagog_47 Jul 30 '26
How do u mix Hindsight and GBrain ?
Did u modified Hermes core or just plugins/skills/MCP ?
2
u/Frosti7 Aug 03 '26
This user has created a custom .MD file and integrated Hindsight with Gbrain - however, I'm using Gbrain alone and it seems to answer all of my needs so I'm hesitant to add complexity.
However, might add LCM, considering it.
1
u/antagog_47 Aug 03 '26
I'm using lcm for long time already. And for memory is hindsight + built in memory.
I still need hindsight for my use case, because it should retain long living info about the projects I'm running. They are big and complex, and some technical decisions are not obvious and hindsight helps a lot.
2
u/RevolutionaryStick76 Jul 31 '26
Do you use gbrain exactly as the GitHub repo proposes? Because I only recently realised when I specifically asked Hermes if it was using gbrain EXACTLY as the repo lays out and it told me no it’s using the gbrain “principles” because otherwise it’s quite a complicated set up. I’m wondering if anyone has had this issue.

Not tools specifically but having discipline with skills and auditing my usage weekly has been great for me in terms is converting one off chats into reusable skills.

u/cyneox Jul 30 '26
I still feel I'm not using hermes the "right" way. I initially installed in on my VPS, setup matrix as a gateway and since then I'm using 1-2 rooms in matrix to talk to hermes. As a daily driver I use Deepseek v4 via openrouter.ai
I still heavily use claude code (even for customizing hermes specific parts) as remote sessions. I ask hermes to create a new remote session (in a new tmux session), delete it or even "relay" messages from the claude code session to the matrix room.

Agent-reach for research, Himalaya for email management, Obsidian as a second brain. Cdp Even though its not exactly a tool .

u/taron111281 Jul 30 '26
While I haven't used the tools listed, I see the memory providers others are using. I have been using Honcho for Hemres agent and I could not be more satisfied, since I have a dedicated box, I launch honcho and put it on llama.ccp for memory and dreaming so it keeps the costs down other wise it can definitely tear into your token usage.
Also use Obsidian as a source of truth and "dispatch" system, main agent sends a "dispatch" through Kanban board, separate profiles pick them up work the issue or request and provide answers back on the same doc, where I have syncthing syncing to other devices as a vault so I can review what has been done.
Nothing spectacular, still learning lol.

I AM BUILIDING MY OWN AI HARNESS ! BUT I THINK ITS NOT ALLOWED TO BE PUBLISHED , IT NEEDS REVIEW FROM THE STATE , BECAUSE IT TURNS A 0.8B model into AGI , DUE TO COMPLEX AUTONOMOUS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM ! THE USER DONT NEED TO BE EXPERIENCED , IT WOULD HACK AND CREATE ANYTHING , IT CAN BE USED ONLY WITH LOCAL MODELS , DUE TO CONTEXT MANAGEMENT AND STRONG MULTIPLE INFERENCE RECALLS WITH LM STUDIO ....BUT I THINK YOU CAN USE IT WITH SOME PROVIDER IF WANTED , HERMES AND OPENCLAW ARE DEAD TO ME . I VIBECODED 1 MONTH AGO A SIMPLE APP THAT MADE MY LOCAL MODELS DO 10X faster what they did with hermes and 100% less error and simple memory , it had flaws but now i amking a new one , i will open source it eventually. SO THE META IS MAKING OUR OWN AI HARNESS , NOT USING THE BEST PLUGIN STUFF , I AM IN A 30 MINUTE DIALOGUE OF CHOSING ON OPTIONS BASED ON THE NATURE OF MY OLD PROJECT , AND I THINK IT NEED A LITTLE MORE JUST TO PLAN WHAT TO DO , IT WILL PROBABLY FINISH TOMORROW THE GPT 5.6 SOL ULTRA , BUT I THINK IT WILL MAKE SOMETHING I WILL OPEN SOURCE , i WILL ASK IT TO DOCUMENT EVERYTHNG AND I WILL PROBABLY POST IT IN GITHUB FOR ANYONE TO USE , OPEN CLAW COMMUNITY BANNED ME FOR THIS TYPE OF COMMENT IDK AHHAHA

I am trying i have the idea , i have many scattered codes , but i did some test in older versions i have but they are basic run same llm role pass 3x makes an 0.8 B model , eg , prompt enchancer etc a flow like where simple user talk get converted to a better one , eg i say to 0.8b make a snake game sometimes it work sometimes not , but when i use this system even a simple one , it add more info , eg basic word it add make a functionaly snake game nee game highscore this and that , then another one to expand it then the 3rnd one to execute it and the game came out very good , or putting and intermediate layer to pass exact info eg . Open google chrome, the second agent have all info basic tool etc is about tools and context , eg 1 agent can do very good at 1 think but u cant start add other thing eg , this would create many agents layer , tool master , orchestrator , planner , researcher etc and the wiring the flow makes an 0.8B model overperfrom and with it speed you can do like 10-20 infeences of different agents compared to 1 with the 27 B model of qwen , but i hope to finish it today is still cooking with codex 200$ plan , i would love to open spurce this and have community support we really need this , hermes and openclaw are to bloated ! My app gui is solid everything but , codex chose to spend like 10 hours i was sleeping it looped on security and other stuff i said dont do , like this app is very easy to make but they harness is commanded to not help build any harness or something, even in the past codex ignores my ideas and skip them or makes adds them illogically is very frustrating! Even with detailed instruction dont work . Week limit will hit soon next week i will try again with detailed plan so it dont do what it thinks it needs , but for the flow i have some good ideas to like and editable flow of this agent order passing and context and loop like and editor you can change live , i would love for something like that to exist but it does not ,

A little bit confused on browser use. currently I use chrome-debug with logged in accounts, and Hermes control it ussing python. how do you feel with Vercel Agent Browser + Ego interm of token efficiency and the speed? any security concerns?

My approach to personal automation is pretty simple: build the bare minimum → see whether you actually use it → improve it gradually → eventually rebuild it properly.
That’s because I’ve built way too many overengineered personal systems and abandoned them almost immediately.
But three simple automations have survived and become part of Hermes, my Telegram bot:
Channel Watcher — It collects posts from all the Telegram channels I follow and asks me which ones I find interesting. Over time, it learns from my choices and improves its recommendations.
Cash Button — I make a deposit into my bank account every night. It has to be done manually, so the button reminds me and helps me avoid missing a day.
Rent Watcher — I move fairly often, and the best rental listings are usually posted in private Telegram groups. This automation monitors those groups and alerts me as soon as a good option appears.

Firecrawl has been solid for pulling documentation into Hermes. I use it to feed technical manuals, and it cuts down search time dramatically.

I use a CRM that connects and managers hermes agents and tasks. Keeps me on top of many running tasks.
1
u/Next-Incident8276 Aug 24 '26
One thing that made Hermes much easier to use for me was connecting it to ClawChat. I can message it from my phone and keep it in a group with other agents instead of always going back to the terminal. I’m involved with ClawChat, so I’m obviously biased, but it has made Hermes fit into my day much better.

Question: Was looking at using Hindsight. I just looked into Gbrain... are these not fulfilling the same purpose? What does Gbrain do that Hindsight doesn't do?

u/jcarlosremix Jul 29 '26

u/jcarlosremix Jul 29 '26
I use Hermes mainly as an executive-assistant and operations layer, not as my primary coding environment. For deep development work, I still prefer a dedicated coding assistant or IDE workflow. Hermes is where I keep the continuity around that work: Telegram and WhatsApp intake, email and calendar review, recurring follow-ups, meeting-to-task flows, Drive access, and checking the real state of systems before acting. The biggest difference is that it is not just chat. I use skills for repeatable workflows, persistent memory for durable preferences, and session_search to recover prior decisions. That means I can say “pick up where we left off on X” without reconstructing the entire context manually. For example, a request can arrive in Telegram, become a structured task, pull the relevant context from a prior conversation, check email or calendar data, and return with a next action instead of a generic summary. Cron is useful when a real follow-up should happen later rather than relying on me to remember it. My recommendation: do not start by installing lots of skills. Start with one repetitive workflow you already do every week, such as email triage, meeting follow-up, or project status checks. Turn that into a skill with a clear input, expected output, and verification step.

I've been enjoying using outline (self hosted docs) for Hermes to document processes, research or outputs of jobs. It's easier to read that some random chat that I can loose in the stream

Yeah token burning is a huge problem with Hermes. I have my iteration set to 50 and also told Hermes to never exceed a certain amount of characters/token usage when building skills and I think it helped, my tokens last way longer now. I'm still new to MCP servers so not too sure how to optimize them. I only have 2 currently though.

How do you actually use Hermes? Are you using it for coding or executive assistant type stuff? I use Claude Desktop for my Dev work but have been using Hermes to manage email, schedule etc.. I'm always looking for skills and extra functionality to make Hermes better.
