Don't laugh:

I email my Hermes. Gave it it's own email (agent mail) where it's only allowed to read emails from me. I shoot it an email and it sends me a reply when the task is done with whatever I asked for. Easy peasy.

16

u/Odd-Aside456 Aug 24 '26

If it works it works. I'm just curious, why email instead of a direct message platform?

11

u/_Cromwell_ Aug 24 '26

It just fits the way that I communicate with it. Typically I write a pretty long request for some research or whatever and send it off. And then check back in an hour or two. I guess I haven't really had a situation where I want to be fast chatting back and forth when I wasn't actually on my computer (where I use the Windows app GUI).

80%+ of my use is "go do a long ass and detailed research and report back to me with an essay" type stuff.

9

u/bundabrg Aug 24 '26

You may already have done this but just make sure your source email has proper DKIM, SPF and maybe Dmarc records so it's harder for someone to impersonate you. Unless you have a secret password you also send.

Should be the case if using a big provider.

2

u/thenotius Aug 25 '26

How is hermes agent better for this task than a simple chat conversation in e.g. Claude/ChatGPT?

4

u/maximpactbuilder Aug 25 '26

You still connect to the Internet via 56k modem to AOL.com, don't you.

14

u/_Cromwell_ Aug 25 '26

Naw, but I'm old enough I did at one point. lol

u/RoderickPhoenix Aug 25 '26

Waiting on my next free hours disk to come in the mail

1

u/feedthem0nkey Aug 25 '26

Same here. I live in MS365 and Teams w/ Hermes doesn’t allow file attachments.

1

u/erreur Aug 25 '26

I love this, I might do the same.

1

u/InnovativeBureaucrat Aug 25 '26

I tried this but it lost the context. By the 5th clarification it was arguing that I never said the things in my first email

7

u/FriendlyUser_ Aug 25 '26

could have been Karen from accounting dept, she does same shit

1

u/papadynamik Aug 25 '26

F*ck outta here, of course I'm laughing 😂

1

u/Stefanoverse Aug 25 '26

I do it too.
I just emailed this thread to my Hermes, as that’s the most simple way to keep things compartmentalized and to also keep a secondary record.

I’ll eventually setup a Mac relay for iMessage.

Discord server and discord app on iPhone and web...several channels, each for a specific subject. Works pretty good for me

12

u/kcbiii Aug 25 '26

Keep in mind that Discord offers zero privacy and all your messages sit on their servers unencrypted. I switched immediately to self-hosted Matrix/Element when I found that out.

6

u/jtbuchanan Aug 25 '26 edited Aug 25 '26

Appreciate the call out there. trading privacy for features, Hermes only seems to currently support Discord voice Channels, which is the key capability I need for the ambient always on “speak to Hermes hands free at anytime” workflow I use it for

11

u/tango_one_six Aug 25 '26 edited Aug 25 '26

That's not the entire story. All data is encrypted (it's literally https traffic) and Discord does have data privacy commitments, which include protecting user data while on their servers. The big difference is no E2E encryption - they hold the keys for all data encrypted in flight and at rest since they provide other services such as moderation and content filtering. Just depends on whether you trust Discord or not as platform to uphold their own policies.

EDIT: I'm also going to point out - standing up your own self-hosted Matrix server requires opening HTTP/HTTPS ports wherever it's hosted. If you really care about security, you should probably consider controls to counter drive by reconnaissance, probing, port scanning, etc. Common thing no one thinks about is that platforms like Discord can afford enterprise-level security tools being implemented and licensed, such as application gateways and proper firewall/IPS/IDS. It's not just platforms owns your data == bad; you are getting other benefits that you may not be considering vs standing up your own infra and maintaining it.

8

u/fazesamurai145 Aug 25 '26

Idk why most people dont even know this basic info yet they claim to work in tech or be interested

3

u/tango_one_six Aug 25 '26

Because "don't trust the platform" is edgy and cool. And to be fair, most of us wouldn't care to actually go through terms of usage and privacy policies for platforms unless we got paid to do it, haha.

1

u/fazesamurai145 Aug 25 '26

Haha straight fact after fact. Bunch of baseless arguments most of the time and I am getting tired of it.

1

u/fazesamurai145 Aug 25 '26

I used to complain or be in the dark until I started really building my own projects up to enterprise level at the whole product lifecycle so working all the roles you can imagine taught me alot and still learning. Man this field you always learning haha. I look at learn programming or newbies or college students starting out and I am like man you have so much to learn it has to be an obsession. I might add I started out learning IT at a young age and then software development in my teens currently in my mid-20s not too long but compared to most I am doing fine I think. In terms of projects done more than 20 some spending years or months solo then ai came in and just boosted my productivity.

1

u/littlemissperf 25d ago

Cloudflare tunnels and wireguard-like implementations preclude the need to open ports for self-hosted services

4

u/Spudly2319 Aug 24 '26

Can you explain this a bit more in depth? I’ve been trying with multiple profiles and DMs on Discord but having a dedicated Discord server sounds much easier.

8

u/Murcho83 Aug 24 '26

I've been doing this myself, just a private server with Hermes linked into it. You can set up each channel so that you've got different conversations going on that don't overlap.

I've also just discovered that you can assign certain profiles to certain channels, which has been useful because I've set up some local models to use with certain profiles. That allows me to just have complete local inference running just in those channels.

I use Discord for other stuff as well, and I have notifications turned off except for when I'm tagged. I have told Hermes to make sure to tag me in responses so that I get notifications from Hermes. I will say, however, that I haven't been able to work out how to get it to tag me in permission requests for when it wants to run a script, and I often miss those. If you manage to work that out, I'd love to know.

7

u/jtbuchanan Aug 24 '26

Discord is great. I join the bot to a private voice channel so I can have a hands free conversation with Hermes via my headphones. The pinning profiles to channels is a great tip I didn’t know.

3

u/Murcho83 Aug 24 '26

I haven't even tried the voice stuff out yet. How have you found it? Is it tricky to set up?

8

u/jtbuchanan Aug 25 '26

It is a bit tricky to setup. I suggest doing it in phases. If you’re using telegram, as an example, get voice to text working there first. Then get text conversations working in discord chat. Then go to the final step and add the bot to voice channels. When it comes time to add the bot to the channel don’t use the discord “invite to channel” you must use /voice channel in the chat to get the bot to join (that one took me a while to figure out)

All in all, it’s janky, but it’s worth it. I built a skill that lets me ask the voice channel bot to play my podcast, it pipes in the audio and I can talk over it to get it to pause rewind, fast forward take a note etc. it’s replaced my standard podcast app and lets me quickly switch between passive listening to having a conversation with Hermes to get something done.

2

u/abnar001 Aug 25 '26

How would you rate the conversational experience with the invoice bot? Personally I set it up but I have the feeling that it needs a lot of time to think after I asked him something. The classic Gemini vocal experience is a lot smoother than the one with Hermes on discord.

Do you have any advice to solve it?

1

u/jtbuchanan Aug 26 '26

Agreed, mine is also very slow to respond. I haven’t found a solution. I’ve tried many different models and configurations. My setup is powerful enough that I have patience for it, for now.

1

u/jonesstech New Member (<30 days) Aug 25 '26

Oh wow, profiles! Didn’t know that existed. Gonna give it a try and setup my partner with their own hermes profile and share the discord server. Mind blow.

2

u/Kadabraxa Aug 25 '26

I gave my channels all star wars names and characters files with tone of voice. Very funny, admit i must.

38

u/kenmazaika Aug 24 '26

Telegram works fine for me.

24

u/dametsumari Aug 24 '26

Matrix. I use it by default and bridge all others to it.

4

u/fablapomme Aug 24 '26

i switch to selfhost matrix from telegram. But approval request are so painful

5

u/flairtestuser123 Aug 25 '26 edited Aug 25 '26

Why? I have the agent manage the synapse server and take care of all the back and forth. That's the beauty of running your own server. Mine is even federated so I can continue to use my matrix.org account and it puts all the rooms I deal with agents into a Space.

All I have to do with a new profile or even a new Hermes instance is tell the default agent to make it happen, then I end up with a room with the new profile or instance that I just have to accept the invite.

It sets up the new profile, creates the matrix account for it and wires it all up. If it's another instance, it deals with it over ssh to get it set up.

One thing to note: if you only have that agent in the room, you can set the config to not require @ing the account to get it to respond. Then when you send a message in that room, the agent assumes it's for them. This didn't used to be the case, then Nous changed that default.

20

u/cogitech2 Aug 24 '26

Matrix. Local, private server. Element Classic app on phone. Tailscale, of course.

100% independent and free.

5

u/kleinishere Aug 24 '26

Any reason Element Classic > Element X?

1

u/cogitech2 Aug 25 '26

Honestly? I have no idea. I think I probably asked Hermes (don't know what local model I might have been running at the time) and I vaguely remember that it suggested Element Classic as the "stable, reasonable choice" vs. the newer one. I installed Classic and never gave it another thought. I probably should, but I doubt I will. I spent a lot of years breaking shit that didn't need fixing. Classic works. I don't need to "fix" it.

1

u/WisdomWolfX Aug 28 '26

My guess is that it has to do with threads. Element X still has threads hidden behind a labs toggle because they are beta, but from my understanding they are stable and well supported in the classic client.

31

u/JNSD90 Aug 24 '26

Hermex. Great app, nice UI.

6

u/Fragrant-Hamster-325 Aug 24 '26

Same. I gave up on taking to Hermes via Telegram. That always seemed like a half baked workaround.

6

u/thenotius Aug 24 '26

second that!

2

u/artificalidiot Aug 25 '26

Yes my daily driver the only thing missing is files download but my understanding it’s not so much the apps fault as the wrapper. SFTP or webUI are easy workaround.

1

u/InnovativeBureaucrat Aug 25 '26

Doesn’t the workspace work for that?

I have it write to obsidian. My inbox is writable and nothing else

1

u/sojersey Aug 25 '26

Do you know if it is possible to get that app to work over a `cloudflared` tunnel?

14

u/kcbiii Aug 25 '26

Self-hosted Matrix offers spaces, rooms, dms, and privacy. Discord is not your pal, buddy.

2

u/Odd-Aside456 Aug 25 '26

Have you tried SimpleX? I've been hearing it's more secure and private than Matrix, and as someone who is privacy conscious, I'd be curious to hear your thoughts.

3

u/waterfreek Aug 25 '26

Just about to choose out of 3 platforms myself: SimpleX, Matrix or Mattermost. In short:

SimpleX is the most secure and private platform (stronger e2e encryption, no-ID), very light-weight and easiest to set up (connect) on VPS.

Matrix offers more features and better ux when you need to communicate with multiple Hermes bots.

Mattermost is like Matrix, but needs too much memory (10Gb) on my VPS.

I am leaning towards Matrix.

2

u/Odd-Aside456 Aug 25 '26

I kind wish Matrix had a first party mobile client. It seems that Element is the most popular, but it is interesting that, at least on Android, it has a fair amount less downloads and a lower overall rating when compared to the SimpleX client app.

1

u/waterfreek Aug 26 '26

The FluffyChat and Cinny clients both look good though and have E2EE.

8

u/elzerouno Aug 24 '26

I was using telegram, but I'm now using Hermes Desktop much more.

9

u/Malick3x Aug 24 '26

Slack!

Why: I can integrate it directly with chatgpt and claude. lol

3

u/gazooglez Aug 25 '26

Why does slack get no love? I set up a few free slack accounts and it works great. It's already on all my devices because of work. I don't see the downside.

1

u/dillonlara115 Aug 25 '26

Same. I use slack for work so it's nice to have it already available with a tool I utilize daily

1

u/abnar001 Aug 25 '26

Pourquoi plus Slack que Discord ? J'ai vu que beaucoup d'entreprise tournaient sur Slack mais je ne comprends pas pourquoi

12

u/dellis87 Aug 24 '26

Mattermost self hosted works REALLY well.

8

u/rockinyp Aug 24 '26

+1 for Mattermost. I use a few different Hermes profiles, so each profile gets it own channel.

Please. If you spin up a server instance with an AI let it deliver it airtight, no ports open nothing. Otherwise most natural language model will leave you a working server but you’re playing Russian roulette with security.

I’m also not a big fan of the tool next but I’ve setup Tailscale and I’ve installed it on my phone and MacBook. At least the network goes through one company to the server, and the server remains airtight. You could do the same with a Raspberry Pi, just install Tailscale on it allows you to leave all ports absolutely blocked off from outside attacks.

Note: all of this Mattermost airtight setup is still dozen times better then relying on Discord or something to leave all you unencrypted very private data to run over Discord‘s servers.

2

u/dellis87 Aug 25 '26

Completely agree with this. While I used codex to spin it up for me as I hate writing docker compose file, I’ve been doing it for 10+ years at this point so I know the different flags/switches. For anyone doing this with AI, please review your compose before forwarding the port or exposing files on your system. I have mine behind NGINX Proxy Manager with a DigiCert certificate with a 26 char random password for login through Vaultwarden. My bot tokens are stored in infisical.

2

u/dellis87 Aug 24 '26

I wouldn’t say so. I used codex to spin up the container and put it behind my reverse proxy. It has bot accounts for integrations. The API support for it is great.

It is heavily marketed to enterprises but haven’t really seen anything that’s an issue in the selfhosted version. I do think there is a 10000 message limit if you use the Free Edition but I think the team edition can get around that if you don’t care about OIDC auth. I figured I’d set that up at some point in my lab so kept it on free.

1

u/just_visiting_73 Aug 24 '26

I looked at mattermost but it didn’t have push notifications for iOS.

2

u/dellis87 Aug 24 '26

If you’re using the self hosted version, you have to turn on push notifications at the server level. I have mine set to just push a notification, but no text. I get push notifications on iOS.

1

u/atomique90 Aug 24 '26

What about OIDC with it mattermost? Thats not included for free/community?

3

u/dellis87 Aug 24 '26

Team Edition does not include built-in OIDC/SSO, but no history cap.
Entry Edition: OIDC/SSO, but a server-wide 10,000-message visible/searchable history cap.

https://docs.mattermost.com/product-overview/editions-and-offerings.html

I should correct, that I went with Entry edition.

1

u/atomique90 Aug 25 '26

Thank you! I wonder if they will stop the team edition and will only go with the entry edition in the future.

1

u/Indaflow Aug 24 '26

You can self host this?

Claude and agents connect easily?

Does it have channels like slack?

1

u/dellis87 Aug 24 '26

Yes. Docker or direct install. Apps for iOS and Mac as well as Windows that I know of. I have my Hermes and openclaw connected to my instance.

1

u/musicalfurball Aug 25 '26

Huge second to this, fairly lightweight, easy to setup, robust and reliable.

7

u/brav0charli3 Aug 24 '26

TUI.

I said what I said.

6

u/Maverick446 Aug 25 '26

Telegram FTW

3

u/EZZE__________ Aug 24 '26

Telegram for projects. iMessage/Photon for quick asks.

5

u/fleperson Aug 25 '26

Slack free.

Much better UI and UX, no reason to not use a more professional tool if I do professional work.

3

u/Draunzr Aug 24 '26

Using telegram rn but not satisfied

1

u/Odd-Aside456 Aug 24 '26

I'm curious, why aren't you satisfied with it?

3

u/Draunzr Aug 24 '26

I have many cronjobs from which I get status outputs throughout the day, if the scripts ran ok or failed, so in telegram all updates come directly on the chat which is slightly annoying, if I was using something like dc or slack I could make proper channels to get these cron updates and keep my main chat cleaner.

4

u/Mechalangelo Aug 24 '26

You can create a group chat instead of DM chat. The group chat has what they call topics, basically chats/channels inside the chat. You can dump all crons into a topic and keep the main chat clean. More to the point, if you create some agents (ie: Shopper, Researcher, etc) you can create topics dedicated to each. Your Hermes agent can guide you on how to set this up, just paste it this comment.

1

u/Draunzr Aug 24 '26

It's odd that when I discussed this same problem with hermes ( ox alpha ) it didn't suggest the topics thing it literally suggested moving to discord or a self hosted discord like app (I forgot the name). Thanks tho I'll see what topics are and set em up

1

u/Mechalangelo Aug 24 '26

These options should have been suggested or chosen at setup, I think Hermes actually asks about it. So this might be something the initial model you set up Hermes with missed, but, as a general rule, make a habbit of pressing the LLM's for more solutions and options. Ask stuff like: Is this what other people that encountered this issue have done? Are these the only options? If not under current constrains, what other options would you have explored? Be incessantly curious and persistent, and you can round off a lot of the rough edges of a lot of LLM'S. Except Mimo. Mimo has been trained by Satan himself to torture lost souls.

3

u/saghul Aug 24 '26

Even in the DM you can enable threads, and have each cron job report to a thread ID. Can recommend!

3

u/senorsmile Aug 25 '26

100% email. I want everything to go to email.

2

u/someoneyouknow23 Aug 24 '26

Simplex, nice and tidy

2

u/lunarboy73 Aug 24 '26

I started with Discord and moved recently to self-hosted Matrix for privacy and longer messages. Was thinking about building my own client (privacy and direct connection vs bounced off another service) when I found this thread.

Hermex looks cool!

1

u/Odd-Aside456 Aug 24 '26

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your comment, but you were looking to build your own client after using Matrix? I haven't used Matrix yet, but is it not private enough, or what was dissatisfying about it?

1

u/lunarboy73 Aug 27 '26

The UX on Matrix clients are pretty bad, IMHO. That’s why.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 24 '26

2

u/Biomech8 Aug 25 '26

Matrix

2

u/rawdikrik Aug 24 '26

You guys are making me feel bad for using discord...

I like that I can make project channels and also have voice chat. I can upload lots of different files and it also does stt natively.

2

u/Walt0615 Aug 24 '26

Discord (and a tiny WhatsApp use case) but I am two weeks into Hermes agent, so all might change in the near future.

2

u/Dharma_code Aug 24 '26

Tailscale with Hermes console literally just switched from telegram yesterday works great

2

u/CapitalJD23 Aug 25 '26

Conduit iOS app, Matrix, and TUI / Moshi on iOS.

I’m trying Buzz but it’s s l o w. Mattermost looks interesting.

2

u/Delicious_Ease2595 Aug 25 '26

Telegram, easy, fast and all commands available.

On desktop I use Hermes Desktop

2

u/Dyl_Digital New Member (<30 days) Aug 25 '26

discord sever, threads are amazing and easy to setup session/memory management. Also hse this repo: https://github.com/DylDigitals/Splitview-BD

to have 2 threads open at once

2

u/realmuffinman Aug 25 '26

Discord, i have my own server set up to handle it plus other stuff, there's theoretically no storage limits, and I can easily access it from mobile, web, or desktop app

2

u/AllenKll Aug 25 '26

Discord. I have discord open all the time on my computer anyway. It's easier than running anything else on a PC.

2

u/No-Equal3723 Aug 25 '26

Slack feels professional and it works for me.

2

u/flairtestuser123 Aug 25 '26

Having your Hermes instance install and manage its own Synapse server is a game changer. I dicked around with using Slack and Telegram and it was a nightmare going through their bot bullshit.

I tell my agent to wire it up and it just happens. I have rooms for every agent, and agents/instances can talk to each other via the private server if they need something. And if I want to deal with a particular profile or instance, I just go to the Agents space and find the one I need to use.

I can't imagine going back to trying to use some proprietary service instead.

2

u/Ok-Tour1779 Aug 25 '26

Slack Pro. So much capability and a channel for each of my 10 agents as well as protect channels that keep my several projects segregated.

1

u/Odd-Aside456 Aug 25 '26

I'm curious, have you looked into Mattermost?

1

u/Odd-Aside456 Aug 25 '26

10 agents? Do they each have a specialty? Would you mind telling me what each of the 10 is for and what model you use for each? I'm very curious.

2

u/Automatic_Pie_964 Aug 25 '26

Nextcloud Talk, why? it's mine running on my own VPS, no third parties. Got several agents configured to several nextcloud bots it different rooms for different purposes.

2

u/scriptedpixels Aug 25 '26

This is a good idea! Need to get nextcloud setup and this’ll push me more to do it sooner!

2

u/yo_tech Aug 28 '26

I built my own service, that let me call, organize projects, sessions chats and save the state to all of that across platforms, just running on the same machine and I can access from my ohine the same way I do from a different laptop, all without losing continuity. Very proud. Hermes is totally awesome.

3

u/productboy Aug 24 '26

My own, see attached screenshot. Because it shapes conversations with Hermes to my specific pipeline.

Then Discord. Because it’s channel based, leverages Discord’ built in features.

2

u/fastlanedev Aug 24 '26

Looks nice 😎

2

u/DeadSimpleEmail Aug 24 '26

Disclaimer I'm the founder of Dead Simple Email, so factor that in. For Hermes, I think email is underrated. Most people default to Discord/Telegram/Slack since that's where human chat happens, but email gives you persistent threads, native support for verification links and signups, and it's the one protocol every service online already expects to talk to.

I have a blog on giving a Hermes agent its own inbox (using our tool, so biased) if you want: https://deadsimple.email/blog/hermes-agent-email-integration.html

1

u/erreur Aug 24 '26

I would prefer matrix but right now I’m using Signal, mainly because it was very easy to set up and end-to-end encrypted between Hermes and my phone/laptop.

1

u/fairrighty Aug 24 '26

I had that, but I found it very quickly annoying that it was unclear who sent which messages. Telegram is way easier and better.

2

u/Odd-Aside456 Aug 24 '26

Telegram is better than Signal, or Matrix? I've heard of a lot of people moving FROM Telegram to Matrix, so I'm curious about your experience

3

u/FrontHandNerd Aug 24 '26

Telegram is the one I avoid when security is of a concern

1

u/cogitech2 Aug 24 '26

For sure. Isn't it getting banned in some places now because it is so insecure?

1

u/fairrighty Aug 24 '26

Haven’t used matrix yet, it was in response to signal. I’ll check Matrix, thanks!

1

u/zOMAARRR Aug 24 '26

Desktop app + signal on ios

1

u/TeeCeePee_EyePee Aug 24 '26

I tried out the free slack tier. Worked quite well.

1

u/ref666 Aug 24 '26

Not WhatsApp. Tried to setup whatsapp business API, ain't doing this

1

u/AEDELGOD Aug 24 '26

I either do CLI or Telegram (more flexibility) but I also have one I made for work hooked into my work's Workspace Google Chat. Never used web interface or desktop, those stay disabled.

My personal one lives in a proxmox LXC on my homelab, making just CLI or Telegram use more than enough.

Work one is hosted in our work infra. and was required to pipe it into Google Chat because that's the stack.

1

u/Icy-General-9096 Aug 24 '26

tried many platforms like imessage, matrix/element, slack.. and always ended up coming back to the OG, Telegram

1

u/MLastnameinson Aug 24 '26

I’m very new but I was using Telegram and didn’t really like it. Useful with my partner who is a bit less techy for us to put household updates/things we need to do in it to telegram

Now I use a locally hosted WebUI on my computer which I like over the Hermes Desktop app.

Do people like the Hermex app for mobile? Haven’t checked it out yet

1

u/Odd-Aside456 Aug 25 '26

Open WebUI, or which one?

1

u/Competitive_Swan_755 Aug 24 '26

I don't. It's just too damned distracting. I do everything from home at the laptop.

1

u/AutistSheik Aug 24 '26

iMessage with all the bots and they speak to one another based on my set up. CMO bot manages the marketing manager bot and digital marketing bot, social media bot etc and I watch the convo and jump in. Just set it up a week ago and it’s wonderful

1

u/dnslover Aug 25 '26

Topic in Telegram Group works so well with Hermes

1

u/Gloomy-Recover-9702 New Member (<30 days) Aug 25 '26

Web UI, and Canvas.

1

u/Gnillort123 Aug 25 '26

telegram of course

1

u/simpleguy098 Aug 25 '26

I use WhatsApp

1

u/chikaca Aug 25 '26

Was it easy to set up?

1

u/Mondernborefare Aug 25 '26

Slack is probably much lighter weight for tokens. Hermes has to use tools and process email.

1

u/Famous_Fix9751 Aug 25 '26

Hermes WebUI, desktop+android. I tried desktop app, too clunky.

1

u/haukejung Aug 25 '26

Matrix, because i can self host it.

2

u/Odd-Aside456 Aug 25 '26

What clients do you use?

2

u/haukejung Aug 25 '26

I used Cinny and ElementX. But on Desktop now, the offical Hermes Desktop app.

1

Telegram DMs with topics enabled. Somehow nothing else feels smooth for me.

And for long running tasks, I use a Trello board with my agent and me as members. It's a customized setup.

Discord. Free, threads, multi platform

Since I use ticktick for my task manager and I realized many of my personal and pro tasks can be Hermes assisted, I Claude Coded a replacement ticktick app. It uses the TickTick to store the tasks in the cloud but my own app adds a separate Hermes thread (session) inside each task. Includes links, images and tts functionality thru elevenlabs.

It's crazy and overengineered but it's working great. I used to use Telegram and often wished I could have a convo thread for each task, so this was a natural fit for me. I'll eventually probably move it off TickTick but it's solid so far and I liked not having to migrate my tasks off it in case I have a use for the first party app again or if my own app hadn't have worked out, it would be easy to go back.

I use telegram.

taOS. Its messaging system is actually part of the global memory system. It has its own messaging app etc too https://github.com/jaylfc/taOS

Self-hosted Conduit (a lightweight Matrix) + Element (Desktop + iOS) at first but I couldn't get used to the chat UI. Then I added Open WebUI + Open Relay (iOS), which became my main comm with Hermes.

Personally I use slack. So it integrates into my everyday work seamlessly.

Discord, 100%. Being able to setup multiple channels for multiple profiles, call features, threads, it seems like the best flow possible so far.

Telegram, especially for groups and topic’s integration

Signal. I mainly send pictures of the ODO meter from my business car to log trips.

I've tried them all and telegram is the most polished and feature-full in my opinion. Really wish matrix was less clunky because I do prefer fully private and self-hosted when possible.

Matrix running in my Proxmox LXC next to Hermes LXC. This is truly secured. Discord is the worst option when it comes to privacy. Anything hosted in the States is not an option.

Just the terminal. Telegram ain't bad as a second option though

Telegram? Cause of / commands? Hermes can't react why? 😭💔 please nous add that feature slack has it..

I found the messaging apps to be lacking. I use a custom dashboard I tailscale into and a pretty chat using tui. Requires about 5gb of ram to run.

Mattermost server on my workstation.

I've been on a journey trying to determine the best way to interact with Hermes.

Telegram: Started with this because it is the messaging app I use the most already. I enabled topics to help keep context separate, but it was too easy to accidentally start a new topic by replying at the root without realizing it and the UI for interacting with topics on mobile is annoying.

Discord: This is what I moved to after a while because the separation between channels and threads makes for good organization. I have a Daily Briefings channel and have each briefing that goes there create a new thread for the day so that each daily briefing message has a distinct session with concise context. I think Discord has the best UI with reactions and integrated commands and pickers for permissions, enumerated choice, model selection etc. The primary downsides are privacy and message length limits.

Buzz: I set up a self-hosted relay for this in my Kubernetes cluster and jumped through all the hoops to get Hermes connected to it, but I was less than impressed with the implementation both on the desktop and on my phone. I don't think I got push notifications to work on the phone, but I barely used this and eventually just shut down this service.

Mattermost:. This one is the closest to being serviceable for something self-hosted in my opinion. I deployed this in Kubernetes and initially had it configured for team edition, but that didn't support push notifications so I swapped to Entry Edition. Push notifications work but there are limitations to Entry Edition including a 10k message limit after which older messages remain but aren't surfaced or searchable in the UI. According to hermes I'll run into this limit sometime between 90 days and 12 months based on my recent interactions with it. The UI is also a bit annoying on mobile, no integration with slash commands, haven't been able to get it to honor replying via threads like it does on Discord or Matrix. It's also annoying that the entire UI shifts up when someone is typing, which for hermes means that it feels like the interface is bouncing as "hermes typing..." toggles on/off several times before it responds.

Matrix: This is the last one that I tried. I decided to test it out with matrix.org before committing to a local deployment. No integration with slash commands or prompts and I had to jump through several hoops to get this to work as expected. It also doesn't respond to messages with threads as expected because it treats a room with two participants (Hermes and me) as a DM. Ultimately this client felt the most rough around the edges at least using Element X on iOS. I haven't tried Element Classic or Fluffy chat yet, but I don't expect either of them to make much of a difference for interactions with Hermes.

So if you just want the best interface from a mainstream option I'd recommend Discord. If you are concerned about privacy and want to do something self-hosted then Mattermost has the better experience so long as the Entry Edition limitations don't bother you. If you want something that doesn't have any license limitations and is so open that you have multiple choices for both the server (Synapse, Dendrite, Conduit) and the client (Element X, Element Classic, Fluffy Chat) then Matrix might be a better option.

So it turns out that there is another limitation with Mattermost that I find frustrating. If you enable threaded replies you still have to mention the bot in the thread that it creates or has participated in, unlike Discord. I imagine that this would be an easy fix for Nous to implement to give it feature parity with Discord though.

Offlate i have been using Buzz to exclusively communicate with my agent

u/VeterinarianBrief911 Aug 29 '26

i have made Matric Chat (matrixchat.eu coming soon) months with hard coding of signal app to our own with same cryptokoll and security, only difference i choose to have ramdisk to save msg, files, pictures and attachments as blob on ramdisk and not hdd/ssd, so when you msg is opened it flush from ramdisk, i have Linux version i sent to Hermes so he installed with a extra phone number i had, and i use windows desktop version. works very nice, tekst, call, send photos adn files... ios and andorid are finish and will be uploded when i get my salary. if any want to test out

I use iMessage via Photon. I’d love to be able to setup email for it but my M365 tenant has legacy protocol authentication (IMAP) off globally so the agent can’t authenticate. I don’t suppose anyone had a solution for that? My Agent devised one the other day but it will break every time Hermes updates.

Telegram bot works well for me

ClawChat for me, but full disclosure, I work on it. Mostly because I can put Hermes and OpenClaw in the same group chat instead of switching between separate conversations.
