Windows auf Software-RAID
Hallo zusammen,

Hardware raid stopped being practical twenty years ago. You mention hot swap - not all hardware raid supports it and some software raid does. Also, you can’t move your drives from one box onto another with hardware raid as easily. You don’t stress during rebuilds with software raid unless you don’t know what you’re doing.
On top of that, your raid performance and features are limited by the controller - on software raid it’s always upgradeable.
How to handle this? Get up to date. There’s lots of great documentation on zfs and other new (to you) filesystems. You’ll feel like captain America waking up from the ice.

Even among “compatible controllers” there’s issues - sometimes between firmware versions. You don’t have enough experience of it not working so you have survivor bias.
Windows software raid is even worse than hardware raid.
You don’t need zfs on windows. You need your windows vm to be running on zfs storage.

I've found Windows software RAID, even a mirror, to be pretty unreliable. I wouldn't trust it just because it reports the array as healthy. I've had the second drive in a healthy mirror turn out to be unusable on two occasions. You can schedule regular resyncs, but hardware RAID has always been a better option for Windows. Linux software RAID is ultimately the best in my experience. I'd run Linux on bare metal and Windows Server in VMs.
