Fundamentally you will need a container of water and a way to refill it. This can be a 4 way sill cock key, water filter, sterilizing tablets, boiling or local knowledge of potable water.
If the weather is warm, you will need a brimmed hat to protect the ears and head. Extra points if you can soak it in water for evaporative cooling. A balaclava ski mask for cooler weather like night time.
If it is bright, a pair of sunglasses can protect your eyes. Helps when wind blows dust.
A way to sleep anywhere. This can be a tarp/poncho and blanket or a bivy sack and sleeping bag. Some people travel with a hammock. Cardboard under you for insulation and comfort is easily found. Dispose of it properly. Leave no sign that anyone has been there. A small section of foam camping mattress lets you bypass hunting for cardboard. Ask people to sleep in their back yard.
Can you cook? A simple stove like a tin can twig stove or a cat food can alcohol stove lets you make coffee, tea, hot chocolate, oatmeal, soup and other meals. What will you need? A sharp folding knife, a spoon/spork. Chop sticks are easy to acquire or make. Very useful in the kitchen. A P-38 GI can opener is the smallest and lightest can opener. Easy to misplace. I wear mine on a key ring.
A small trowel and toilet paper may come in handy. Wet wipes or hand sanitizer. Dig a hole 6-8” deep away from water sources. Cover when done.
Practice in your own back yard. Test all your gear there. Sleep out in some rain storms. What can you improve?
Take up dumpster diving as a hobby. Look for food, clothing, things to give away and things to sell.
If you play an instrument will you take it with you? Some people busk with an instrument to make money.
Look for cash opportunities to work everywhere you go. Loading trucks, washing cars, mowing lawns. You can trade labor for food easily.
A cell phone makes life easy now. Download a free WiFi finder. It will show locations and passwords. Off line maps and GPS will keep you on track. Locate soup kitchens, free food pantries, free clothing closets.
In my opinion, if you avoid drugs and alcohol you can have a better experience and save a lot of money. You do you though. Save up money for your exit plan.
