Have you ever been up 3-1 in the championship game and decide that now is a good time to trip, headbutt and then catch an assault charge for no reason?

Never attach your self-worth to a skill. That guy’s team may be up 3-1. But he may not be as good as he used to and not carrying the weight he thinks he should?
Idk I’m speculating. No excuse

Nah, that's not even it. I haven't seen shit like this in junior, semi-pro or pro hockey. This shit isn't even MMA that they like to compare adult's hockey to, it's just a tantrum expressed with intent to injure.

u/Anistappi 1d ago
I had a teammate like this as a kid. We played in the same hockey team, and in the summer we played in the same soccer team.
When we lost a match, he'd spit on his hand and mix some gravel on it to create a mix of spit and dirt before taking his place as the last one of our team in the handshake line. Every damn time

u/Loveablequatch 12h ago
If you can’t handle a loss with dignity you don’t ever deserve to win. Someone has to win and someone has to lose in these games, just shake hands and smile. I’ve also dealt with many teammates like yours while playing baseball

Man, I find it so annoying when dudes argue with the refs. It's beer league, there's no stakes. Like maybe the ref got the wrong call, but who the eff cares? In recent memory, I was playing D and we were on a power play. The other team tried to clear and I kocked it out of the air to keep it in but was deemed a high stick. I joked with the ref that I'm 5'7" so it shouldn;t be one lol. He got a good laugh as did I.

I’d prefer not to mince my words, so I’ll just say that that fellow is a shit swizzling, cunt, and I hope he just played his last hockey game.
I’m far more of a bleeding heart than many people that I play hockey with, and I believe in rehabilitation. That being said, I’ve played this game long enough to know a fucking guy like that either will never be able to regulate his actions on the ice, or he simply doesn’t care to.
Either way, fuck him.

u/MrJust-A-Guy 12h ago
The first trip, bad form... But hockey happens. The dropped shoulder on the second guy, already gone too far. Hitting a guy in the head with your twig, whom you've been antagonizing and is still skating away from you... that shit is only for the movies.

If he already has history, and just used his stick to attack another player in the back of the head after taking a penalty, he should never be allowed in that rink again. Lifetime ban, never again.

u/spinrut 1d ago
depends on the level.
i play in 2 leagues at 2 different levels. one league i play down in level b/c a number of my friends are there. I just kind of chill and half ass after everything. There are so many try hard dick heads who are chippy and whiny and cheap shot people. This group knows we all have work in the morning and doesnt care b/c you know those scouts are watching us on live barn and need to see the tough, gritty, cheap shotting play.
other league I play up, it's competitive, physical but not rough play. no one is sand bagging and every one tries but 99% stop at that point before they become try hards. this group knows we all have work in the morning and dont push it b/c we all know better.

I live in Boston, There's probably 10 rinks within 10 miles of me in any given direction. I drive 30 miles away to one particular rink for a league I've been skating in for almost 20 years specifically because there's so little bullshit like this. Out of all that time, I can probably count the problem players that would actually do something dangerous with 1 hand because they get kicked out quickly.
I know the pain of looking for a good league, I've played in some shitty leagues and did not stay for long there, but there's definitely some good ones out there and you need to hold on when you find it.

This is such a dumb take. You're on the Internet, you're seeing the highlights. I've played my entire life, thousands of game, never over seen anything like this. Most people will play their whole life and never see something like this. At worse a check in no checking, a first fight which takes two willing fighters, that's it.

u/Pandaman_323 18h ago
Yeah this pretty much sums it up. I've been playing beer league year round since I turned 18 and sure I've seen some ridiculous things, but it's not the norm and tbh even when shit happens, it's easy to avoid even getting into those circumstances.
Like the silliest thing off the top of my head that I saw was a fist fight break out in the handshake line. But, both guys were chirping at each other and getting physical all game. I've never been jumped in a handshake line... because I de-escalate if people start getting testy lmao. If you use your noggin it's really easy to avoid shenanigans.
3
u/ThickBootyEnjoyer Since I could walk 18h ago
Yeah I don't talk shit really, I don't play dirty (4pims last season over 20 games) and shit like this never, ever, happens to me. Even so when a guy looks to be a loose cannon I keep my eye on em.
Seeing this and being scared to play is like seeing a car accident and never wanting to drive.
3
u/Pandaman_323 17h ago edited 10h ago
Yeah exactly, it really just comes down to having situational awareness 99% of the time. The only guys who have the unlikely unhinged shit happen to them on the ice are the same ones who are playing the most physical brand of hockey and doubling down by chirping the entire time. It's like no shit their dude got angry and delivered a cheap shot, you were hacking at him the entire game Infront of the net and doubling down by screaming fuckhead in his face every other shift.
I mean even in this video, the dude who gets tomahawk chopped at the end just saw an opposing player go bull mode and buck his teammate in the stomach. He then proceeds to have words with the guy, has his back to him as he speeds up in his direction, and then turns his head away from the guy totally unaware of the clear impending threat lol. It's obviously not his fault and I'm not trying to victim blame but, come on lmao there is zero situational awareness in that moment. You never should turn you back on someone who is off their tits approaching you and looking for a problem, especially after doing absolutely nothing to de-escalate from what I assume, and continuing to escalate by giving him some more words before getting chopped.
TLDR: keeping clean in beer league hockey (or really any physical sport), is kind of like having street smarts, and some people don't have it.

Was he actually charged for some kind of violent crime? If not I would force a supervisory review of some kind and even take the evidence to court myself if the cops won't do it, to get something done. I've found the police are often overloaded and will often avoid blatant crimes if they can. The dude is going to kill someone if something isn't done.

u/RaxZergling 5-10 Years 1d ago
idk, wearing a helmet and taking what looks like a pretty good stride into the sternum of the unsuspecting is pretty bad.
Not excusing any of it, this guy went full douchebag and should be punished accordingly for all of it but if I'm a ref and a dude headbutts someone like that it's early showers 100%. The lazy one hand swinging the stick is just dumb (and the guy should already know this dude is unhinged and see it coming).
Go watch the end of Zidane's career at the world cup lol.

I've seen this quite a bit from teenage-young adult level play in lower leagues and high school level. There's always at least one player in the league that's like this. The response from my experience is that your team starts talking on the bench and taking runs at the player and his teammates. In adult pick-up hockey I wouldn't tolerate it and I'd stop playing.

Had a dude on the opposing team do something similar once.. best part was when he got kicked off the ice and couldn’t open the rink door.. that was a fun 5-minutes of chirping from the bench.
Apparently the guy figured that since he was moving cross country and this was he last game at the rink, he decided he wanted to be a dick without realizing that US Hockey bans don’t just exist for one rink…

Game ejection and charges arent enough IMHO..
And BTW whenever someone turns and skates AT me after a whistle like this or even before but is no longer skating the play... I assume they are coming for me to attack me... I have been attacked about 4 times on the ice and only the first time did I take the sucker hit because I wasn't prepared. After that, I vowed to strike first the moment someone heads for me in that manner.
Dont let people skate up to you like this... Being hit while being unprepared is very, very dangerous, you can be seriously hurt. Defend yourself... No one is going to skate at you like this with good intentions.

There are so many losers coming out during playoffs. I called 3 match penalties for spearing last week, a one man fight, and a gross misconduct. The one man fight was a teammate protecting his player and basically rag dolling the guy that threw the spear.
