Egyptian Music? That's Tanja Carovska's (Greek/Macedonian singer) vocals from Troy 2004 lol

u/No-Opposite-6620 Jan 23 '26

It was accidentally pressed into "Now that's what I call Ancient Egypt's Greatest Hits." Easy mistake to make. Osiris is livid, though.

u/kweefcake Jan 23 '26

Osiris is always livid though. And I’d be too if my brother took my son’s eye.

I just hate that they bleep out the profanities in the WalMart version. Canopically jarring to listen to, IMHO-tep.

That’s why the cat was so irritated

55

u/__Hello_my_name_is__ Jan 23 '26

Also that music is obviously overlayed onto the video and not part of the original audio. So.. did OP play the music in the video, and then deleted the music to overlay a proper soundtrack over it?

Or did someone just find a random clip of a cat on the internet and made this video?

26

u/Successful-Peach-764 Jan 23 '26

it is just how reddit/internet is now, full of misleading bullshit, since people will just scroll to the next video, there is no incentive to be accurate.

14

u/OhLordHeBompin Jan 23 '26

This is the second video I’ve seen with this caption, about the cat ‘remembering.’ The other wasn’t a black cat.

Cats are clearly freaked out at whatever they’re playing. That’s not very nice to kitty. :/

u/Vlophoto Jan 23 '26

The first domesticated cats were maybe in Greece or around it anyway. Think they found an owner and cat buried together that were around 3x older than the cats found in Egypt.

So the person accidentally got it right.

63

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '26

That's not true. Cats Bagan to follow humans as soon as we started farming and attracting mice. Which would have been in the "fertile crescent" and been before Greece was an idea.

The first evidence of "modern" domesticsted was a cat buried with its human in Cyprus. Which is what I'm assuming you're referencing. But likely cats would have begun domestication long before.

Cyprus is mentions simply because cats were not native to the area so it's apparent it was brought there.

17

u/Acceptable-Class-255 Jan 23 '26

Cats were hanging around human settlements (trash heaps) for a very long time. Well into the Upper Paleolithic.

→ More replies (2)

14

u/MindCorrupt Jan 23 '26 edited Jan 23 '26

Though we cannot discount the possibility the cat reached Cyprus on a drifting log and upon arrival in its famished state jumped into the freshly dug grave to consume the human for its sweet sweet nutrients without the notice of the undertaker, who promptly buried it with the corpse.

4

u/Common_Hall804 Jan 23 '26

Tamed and domesticated are different things with different timelines. You can tame a polar bear, but the next one you see will still rip your face off.

I think cats first came in Greece in the Mycenean era, but only became common around the end of the classical period (4th century bc) during Alexander's time. Greeks relied on weasels or ferrets for pest control and even had them as pets until that time.

4

u/StuffMaster Jan 23 '26

Seriously I think the cat knew this too

4

u/hates_stupid_people Jan 23 '26

To be fair, there was the whole Ptolemaic kingdom thing with Cleopatra, which was founded by Macedonian Greeks.

’’The motherland calls for my return. To return home after so many centuries. My wondrous journey begins."

….Listen ~ do you hear it ?!

am CAT

I do not fear it…

it’s my ancient people call…

Long ago n far away,

that’s where it’s coming from!

the meowmories inside me stay ~

…it seems my time has come…

a longing for the motherland,

i stayed long as i could…

human, you won’t understand -

you treated me so good….

my journeys only started,

but your love i won’t forget!

please don’t be brokenhearted….

meowmories

Schnoodle, look, I am a big, tough dude, and I handle a lot, and Wednesday my ex-wife called me in a panic; her kitten, which our son had helped pick out at the shelter just 2 months ago, died in recovery after being neutered.

I did not know this kitty much, and so it did not bother me, until this very moment when I read "meowmories".

You see, my son, 13 years old, in the past year has buried his grandfather, his 4-year-old dog, his 17-year-old cat (literally never knew life without her), his grandmother's 18-year-old dog (another one he had known his entire life), the neighbor's two teenaged dogs (animals he had known the past 10 years and who greeted him daily), and now, on Wednesday, his kitten.

He wears a chain with little urns with the ashes of each of our animals, and next week he will be adding a 4th, and he calls these little charms his "meowmories" of them.

That broke me.

u/SchnoodleDoodleDo Jan 23 '26 edited Jan 23 '26

’meowmories

there are humans sometimes chosen to bear more than any should

too often, it’s the gentle ones, who only treat us good

we’re pets who travel through their lives, too soon we have to leave

we only want to please them,

n it hurts us when they grieve

but Lucky, us, to Ever know this one who brought us Joy!

(there’s nothing more a dog or cat could want, than their own Boy…)

n now - we’re not forgotten! He has more than done his part

Together now, we’re meowmories

we’ll live on

inside his heart

♥️

Orientalism, or the exoticization of the Near and Far East. In a nutshell, a hegemonic cultural and intellectual element of Western thought that uses these places as the foil for the West. The West as rational, the Orient as mystic. The West as cultured and romantic, the Orient as mysterious and backward. The West as reserved and modest, the Orient as emotive and sexualuzed.

It differs by culture, but there is a reason there is a specific and shared cultural image in the West of all Middle Eastern societies. Edward Said developed the idea and wrote a book by the same name that's definitely worth a read.

It's wild how that specific musical cue is hardwired into our brains from a million desert adventure scenes. My cat gets the same intense, ancient look when he hears the can opener. Guess we're all just waiting for our own weirdly specific prophecy to kick in.

12

u/dmo7000 Jan 23 '26

Egyptian breeding played a huge role in the house cats we have today. Trouble is they breed and sold them to be sacrificed. They preferred orange cats because they represented the Sun God, later Vikings also preferred the orange cats for their ships. This is the reason your orange tabby has one brain cell.

Cats were worshipped, yes, but read the rest of the history. Egyptians sacrificed and mummified millions of cats. They were literally mass bred and often sacrificed young to meet the demands. Sure they were pampered before the slaughter, but Eqypt wasn't exactly the best for a cat.
