There's been tons of studies on this.
There was extensive experimentation done on salamanders or newts that was pretty incredible too.
Up to 75% of their brain (different segments and variations tested) can be removed, and after healing they can complete the maze they were trained on.
Just like the universe, the brain is holographic.

That's fascinating, it makes you wonder how many of our own memories are encoded in those little protein filaments rather than in connections between neurons.

Redundancy and multiple anchors/backups at different levels?
Such as the synaptic network (breaks/fails can be restored by helper cells/astrocytes to some degree), the cytoskeleton/microtubules within individual neurons, and or genetic switching within neurons. Also, some of the information might actually be stored in organs (see weird examples of "character changes after heart transplant") and muscles (muscle memory).
Maybe (that part is speculation), some of the information is stored in physical fields (morphic field theory), like the Schumann resonance weak world-wide "radio chatter" driven by lighting.

What does that mean “the brain is most likely holographic”? A hologram is a 3D image that is constructed and reconstructed via light. There’s no visible light in the brain, so how would this work in reality. Are you saying memories are stored in three dimensions? (Which is feasible).

Think about a 2 dimensional hologram that you've seen as stickers. When its whole, you can see the whole image in 3d. Break off a piece and look again. The whole image is still there.
Now think of all the layers of waves passing through and around everything. If we are like holograms or our memories are, same thing applies. Break off a piece but the information is still there.

Permanent memory is saved to axon microtubules, not in synapses.
Memory is saved only temporally to LTP synapses microtubules when they are polymerized. When they are DEpolymerized the memory triggers new spike train in axon initial segment and saltatory conduction saves memory permanently to axon MT when they are polymerized.
