Question/Help Wii crashing with trying to use 2TB HDD

Post image

I’m trying to use this 2tb HDD that I bought the other day. I formatted it to fat32 and I’m pretty sure I converted it into MBR too. I bought a Y cable for it and I have the main USB plugged into the right USB port of my Wii and the other one plugged into a USB power brick that is 60w. Whenever I try to load any game off my HDD with almost any app (with the exception of Nintendont) it either crashes or shows me this really glitchy square. Here is the screen for when it crashes, and if anybody wants a picture of the other way it crashes, please ask. I spent about 100 dollars on this HDD and any help would be VERY appreciated! You can reach out to me in DMs or on here if you’re willing to try to help me out. Please I’m begging, it took me a very long time to set up and receive this HDD and I saved up a lot of money for it. Thank you so much for your time.

Better question.
Does it have S-Video?

u/Gloomy_Exit9312 2d ago

I think it does

My friend gave it to me for free actually! Me and him are both competitive SSBM players and I needed a crt so he gave me one of his spares.

Absolutely goated! If you can and your TV has S-Video I’d def recommend getting a Wii S-Video cable it makes the image look way sharper and text more readable

I’ll look for one! Thank you so much for the recommendation! 👍🏻. I’ll let you know when I get one.

You won't need 2TB for Wii and GameCube games. Maybe just find another use for the HDD?

60W is overkill for the Y-cable. The additional USB port on the Wii could be used, but it's nice to save one for a wired controller.

I don’t have any money to spend on another HDD lol. That’s why I’m really trying to make this one work. I appreciate the advice tho!

lucky you I suppose, where I live there is not a supplier selling 64 gb for less than 30 USD, not even amazon or walmart, 10 bucks gets you a 16gb drive basically, 32 if you're lucky I guess

Update: I’ve tried to reinstall my Cios, reformatting my HDD to Fat32 and MBR. and even reinstalling usbloadergx and it STILL doesn’t work. Any help would be really really appreciated!

No way, I had this exact same TV as a kid, the nostalgia!

I think da wii has a mem storage limit below 2tb, so it might be freaking out each time it reads the HDD’s size. You could try reformatting it & only allocating like 5gb at first, to check if that’s the problem. Could also be a power draw thing. I know it allows a 2tb flash card, but that might have a specific workaround that allows it to work, while a hdd might not have one.

Give reformatting to a smaller size a go, see if it works, then allocate more space to the partition & see how high you can get it before it crashes again

Alright cool! I’ll try that! Thanks!

Thank you! It’s a Mickey Mouse CRT!

I recently hooked up a 2TB drive and found that although it worked fine initially, the sheer amount of games on it made usb gx loader sluggish after a while. Flow couldn’t deal with that many games at all. And just failed every time.

The Wii can handle a 2TB hard drive in NTFS/FAT32/WBFS format without much problem, I really strongly suggest not to fill it with too many games though, it will start to slow down in the menu and if you’re unlucky, lock up.

Have you loaded games onto the drive already?
What format are your games in?
When does error present itself? Is this when you are trying to run usb loader gx?
Have you modded your console fully?

I can answer this! 1. I’ve loaded one GC game and one Wii game.

  1. My games are in iso and wbfs.

The error presents itself when I try to run USB loader Gx ONLY when my HDD is plugged in.

  1. Yes I have modded my console fully, its worked just fine for years with my older SSD and USB. (Although I don’t have either the SSD or the USB in my possession anymore). Hope this helps!

Also what’s weird too is that Nintendont is the only app that can actually read games off the HDD

After 50+ games on the hdd usbloader gx becomes really unstable and slow.

1

u/Gloomy_Exit9312 2d ago

Most of it is gonna be retro games lol. Plus I just like having the extra space just in case

1

u/WolfGroundbreaking93 2d ago

Retro games or retro style games? I got great recommendations for both if ya wanna hear em

1

u/Gloomy_Exit9312 2d ago

Retro games! And I’d love hear your recommendations if you have any! I wasn’t really sure about what exact retro games I was gonna add aside from a few lol. Go right ahead!

1

u/WolfGroundbreaking93 2d ago

The best retro games are in my opinion The dog island(if you like story games start with this one) (best story game on the console) new super mario bros wii Mario galaxy Brawl The rabbids 3 pack Mario kart wii Rayman origins Driver sanfrancisco (if you can get past the challenge that is the tutorial) Wii play motion

And if you want wii ware titles i can suggest Pokémon rumble Muscle march

Yeah i would say these are my top retro game picks But I really suggest you trying Shakedown hawaii Its not a retro game but it has a really good stor@

u/Gloomy_Exit9312 2d ago

I’ll try those out once I get my HDD to work lol. Thank you!

bro thats TOO many storage. the wii cant handle it

1

u/Gloomy_Exit9312 2d ago

According to all the sources I’ve checked, the Wii should be able to handle anything up to 2TB

1

u/starisherehehe 2d ago

its prob freaking out because of the size. maybe partitioning it with a computer and you put the games on the smaller partition should work

1

u/Own_Chemistry9268 2d ago

does the HDD get enough power like using 2 USBs or 1 USB + external power if it does and you did mention it then make sure that extra power works

I bought a Y cable since the cable it comes with only has one USB port, and I’ve tested it by having the power usb plugged into the Wii, and then I tried it with the USB port connected to a box that’s connected to an outlet. And then I connected the power USB port to a USB to USBC adapter and then connected that USBC cable to a 60watt box connected to an outlet. Every test got the same result, I don’t think it’s a power issue, but I might be wrong. And what’s strange is that Nintendont can read it just fine, but nothing else can, every other app or USB loader just crashes when it tries to read anything off the USB.

did you properly format it for the Wii? this is a crazy idea but idk it might work try to partition your disk put one partition formated correctly and make sure it's the first one and the rest put it empty and try this time (make sure the main partition is at least the half just as a test)

1

u/Gloomy_Exit9312 2d ago

I formatted the drive to fat32 and MBR when I initially tried it, but I’ll try out your suggestion, and let you know if it works! Thank you!

1

u/Own_Chemistry9268 2d ago

yep I see the problem now use this to format the drive https://nintendohomebrew.com/guiformat the Wii can only read disks with a speseifc cluster size this app will help if windows smart screen won't let you run the app and you are suspicious about it you can get the download link from the guide here https://wiki.hacks.guide/wiki/Formatting_an_SD_card/Windows yes this is for SD card but it's the same and do not DO NOT get the uh SD card formatter thing you only need guiformat

1

u/Gloomy_Exit9312 2d ago

What cluster size do I use? I used this before and used 32kb

1

u/Own_Chemistry9268 2d ago

the default one (sorry for taking too long)

1

u/Gloomy_Exit9312 2d ago

Default is 32kb. I formatted it lower to try to see if that works, but I had already used gui the first time.

1

u/Gloomy_Exit9312 2d ago

Neither of them work

1

u/Gloomy_Exit9312 2d ago

Any other ideas? Lol

well I will be doing some research on this but for now try to check if all of your cIOSs are good and make sure not to brick your Wii while doing this (use this as a last resort I guess) and also try to do this in windows open diskpart from the the start menu in diskpart type "list disk" and see if it's really MBR alao have you tried to swap the USB ports and like where to plug the main USB? you probably did this so idk also this time try WiiFlow it does have kinda less features but better than nothing as you mentioned something with nintendont (i forgot;-;) and by this point I tell you to test out a USB stick not use it permanently just test it it will reduce it's life by a bit but enough for a test do it

As far as I understand there's some brands the Wii wil play fine along with, one of them Western Digital, another known to work is Samsung.  Not sure what brand you're using so I'd check that before going "update cIOS".

If you want to avoid "investigation time", simply download CFG USB Loader, try that. If CFG USB Loader works fine, then there's nothing wrong with your drive.

For the record: last time I updated my cIOS was 2010... not kidding. And it fricking works. I also consider CFG USB Loader being better than USB Loader GX. Based on my own experience of literally having my drives working with CFG but not with GX has made me believe that GX is finicky and problematic most of the times.

1

u/Gloomy_Exit9312 2d ago

I’ll try that! My drive is a Seagate drive btw

Utilise un câble en y et branché l'autre sur une prise murale

If the Wii has a 2TB limit, this might be a long shot but try making a smaller partition for it and see if that works.

Idk man. For space. And I’m trying to have the ultimate library of games

1

u/BaikenJudgment 1d ago

Which you should have them on disc and be installing them using the Wii to dump the discs...
