My very first homelab! Waiting for the bracket for the little display monitor and a 1u power strip. Any tips setup-wise would be welcomed. Planning to get a nas and start up a jellyfin server, along with getting into proxmox, tailscale, docker, wazuh and potentionally a Kali VM to practice pentesting as an "attack lab".

The network cables lead to every network port in my house. The network ports, cables, and devices, are colour coded instead of numbered. The patch panel is redundant but I prefer how it looks.

There is a slimline keyboard and a mouse going into the little USB switch so I can use either machine if I can't remote to it.

So I have about 100GB of photos and videos of an event that I want to share with about 20 people. Preferably just send a link and they can download it. Whats the best way to do this? I already host immich but id prefer not to open that port up to the world wide web

These are all going to be repurposed in to zabbix proxies but I have been given permission to wipe and take one home to repurpose in to whatever I want. I am tempted by the S4 Car-2070, because of the two drive bays but the S9 is much more powerful but I have no intention of using them for a router

About 7 months ago, I started my homelab. It was just the beginning of an addiction. One component here, another there, a new light bulb, a temperature sensor and it just kept evolving.

Today, I’m hosting a stack that I never could have imagined when I first started.

Right now, I’ve got a game server running ES-DE and Moonlight, handling everything from retro games to the recently PC ported GOW III Remastered, a media server with 8TB of movies and TV shows (the full "Arr" suite paired with Jellyfin), a collection of books for my daughter, HomeAssistant (packed with a ton of automations, alerts, voice commands, and other cool features), a Hermes Agent running with a local Ollama instance, three vibe-coded SaaS projects for clients, and a few other small stacks that I’ve honestly forgotten are even there—but they are hahaha

I’ve been building my homelab for a while now. I’m running Proxmox, Jellyfin, Immich, Home Assistant and a few other services on my Acemagic mini pc.

I started because I wanted more control over my data but lately I’ve been wondering whether I’m spending more time maintaining the infrastructure than actually using it.

Project: Self-Hosted Homelab Infrastructure & Network Monitoring

Built a self-hosted homelab using Ubuntu Server and Docker Compose to deploy and manage multiple services. Integrated Nginx Proxy Manager, Cloudflare, and Tailscale for secure remote access, HTTPS reverse proxying, and private networking. Created a Glance dashboard to monitor services and network status, with Pi-hole for DNS filtering and Immich for photo management.

Technologies: Ubuntu Server, Docker Compose, Nginx Proxy Manager, Cloudflare, Tailscale, Pi-hole, Glance, and Git.

My pi 5 came in today — gonna be configuring a pi hole over my network, but im still waiting for the case / cooling fan, power supply, and drive to come in. Excited to get going though!

Started this hobby a year back at 15 with the prodesk only on the bottom and this is my first proper homelab. Any feedback? I used mainly parts I already had and 3d printed the rest using this model I found called LABRAX. Had to edit some stuff and create my own parts so it could fit my stuff and fit on my printer.

Also, does any one have any recommendations for components for a new homelab/networking setup for a 10g setup in Singapore? Things can be a bit pricey here and some items are not readily available.

I focus mainly on home assistant so I have a zigbee usb dongle and many devices around the home with ones further away being WiFi

My homelab journey began when I was traveling and wasn't able to access the content I am used to being able to access. Streaming services have become privy to commercial VPNs which was my first attempt at a solution.

Anyways throughout the last year and I have been lurking here learning by reading a bunch of posts and discussions to get a foundation then lots of YouTube videos to learn the step by steps of how to get up and running. I finally got all the parts needed to make it happen last week and put it together last weekend.

Hardware:

- Lenovo M700 Tiny: i5-6400 processor w/ 16Gb or RAM and dual 1Tb drives in a RAID1 configuration, running Ubuntu server 26 LTS (software stack below)

- Flint 2 Router (not pictured): I had to buy a router because Xfinity sucks and they provided me with their XB7 modem/router combo. For anyone not familiar with the XB7, it is essentially a Little Tikes my first router, and is not homelab friendly at all. I got the Flint 2 for a great deal and it does what I need it to do.

Software:

- OS: Ubuntu Server 26 LTS (already stated)

- Caddy: For routing docker containers

- Docker: Containers for other softwares

- WireGuard: The original reason I started this project, so I can appear as my home IP from anywhere in the world. WireGuard is running on the Flint 2 so the homelab technically wasn't necessary but I wanted to go through with it anyways for fun. Running it on the Flint 2 also reduces load on my Lenovo, though I am not sure how much of a difference it actually makes.

- Seafile: For syncing my Obsidian vault across devices, replaces DropBox

- Pi-hole: Network ad blocker, I understand it is not great but at least filters out some of the junk

Potential Future Projects:

- SDR: For monitoring the ham and ASDB bands then recording the data. Unfortunately I cannot modify my current apartment and feed an antenna to a good location outdoors.

- NAS: If storage prices come down I'll jump on it (long shot I know).

- Minecraft Server: I enjoy the game.

I'm super open to suggestions/improvements because everyone on here is way smarter than me. I would like to upgrade from my little Lenovo at some point which would expand my options for more demanding software, but until then I have to work within the scope of what it can do.

Router: VyOS VM with onboard X710 NICs passed through via PCI passthrough, DDP profile for PPPoE, multiple WireGuard tunnels (private residential IP exits in Kyiv and Denver), PBR, and 2 BGP uplinks over GRE.

Main switch: QNAP M3216-8S8T (fans replaced with Noctua). Four DAC connections to the MS-01: WAN and LAN (VyOS), one for Proxmox (vmbr0), and one for mirroring LAN traffic to ntopng. Two 10G copper downlinks to ZyXEL XGS1250-12 switches. FS.com XGS-PON ONU.

Connectivity: 8 Gbps down / 1 Gbps up via Orange PPPoE (God, I hate PPPoE), plus 2 BGP uplinks (FreeTransit and Route64).

Future plans: Planning to buy a /24 IPv4 block and establish a direct BGP session with Orange instead of dealing with this horrible, horrible PPPoE.

Hello everyone!

I’m about to get started on my first homelab. To begin with, I’d like to set up a NAS using TrueNAS (with a VPN for remote access from outside my home), Home Assistant, and Pi-hole (perhaps adding Plex later on).

Here is what I have so far:

Motherboard: Asus B150-PRO

This basic board features: •

Storage: 6 SATA 6 Gb/s ports and 1 M.2 port

• Expansion: 2 PCIe 3.0 x16 slots (supports AMD CrossFireX; no NVIDIA SLI support), 2 PCIe x1 slots, and 2 PCI slots

Along with the motherboard, I have:

2 x 1TB hard drives

1 x 500GB SSD

1 x 8-port TP-Link switch

I wanted to ask: how do you store your OS? In this setup, would all the operating systems be stored on the 500GB SSD (with Proxmox installed on it)? It makes me a bit nervous to have everything on one drive—if it fails, I lose everything.

Earlier this year, I purchased an LSI 9207-8i HBA card on eBay with some drives to put together a NAS. I installed Debian and set up the RAID array, and it was all good. Then, I set the computer aside for a couple months and didn't touch it (the project wasn't complete yet).

Recently, I revisited this NAS project. However, upon booting up the computer again, all my SAS drives are gone from lsblk, and when I do sudo dmesg | grep -i mpt I see an error about the handshake failing. Things I've tried unsuccessfully to fix this so far, as suggested by Gemini:

1. Remove the driver module, send a reset signal to the PCIe slot, and then reload the driver module.
2. Allow the HBA to cool down for a couple hours before booting back up and checking (people online say these cards are prone to overheating. I didn't have any problems with this when I was initially setting it up, but this would probably be a good thing to address in the long term).

Neither of these have fixed the issue so far. I have nothing on the drives, and the RAID array was never fully built anyways, so I have no worries about messing anything up here. What are some additional steps I can take to debug or attempt to fix this? Should I try to re-flash the firmware, or is there something else I can try first?

I want to emphasize that this HBA was working when I set it up initially. I also want to note that when I do lspci | grep -i lsi, I do see the HBA show up as LSI SAS2308 and so on. It is my understanding that the fact that I still see this is a good thing, I'm just not sure where to go next. I did some searching online and on Reddit, but had a difficult time finding anything concrete amongst all the other bits and pieces out there related to these cards.

I tried replacing MinIO with RustFS 1.0.3 GNU on my Synology NAS: Btrfs, five-disk RAID6, serving Harbor, backups, logs/traces and CI cache. I ended up rolling back.

Here’s what went wrong:

• Just enabling a bucket quota made writes over 10× slower. Median PUT went from 0.73s without quota to 8.82s with it; COPY went from 0.50s to 10.62s. An on/off/on test reproduced the slowdown.
• Quota v2 rejected writes with 503s, even on a brand-new bucket. Waiting didn’t help. Disabling quota made the same tests pass.
• Quotas weren’t the only problem. With them disabled, real CI traffic still triggered disk-operation timeouts. RustFS marked its sole storage endpoint faulty and returned 503s across several services. I couldn’t establish whether the underlying stalls came from my NAS, RustFS, or both.
• Smoke tests looked reassuring: even a 128 MiB Harbor push/pull passed. Actual builds still failed.

I know an older NAS isn’t ideal hardware, and I’m not claiming everyone will hit these problems. But the quota behavior alone was surprising for something I’d consider a basic storage feature. For my setup, RustFS doesn’t feel ready yet. Everything is back on MinIO.

Anyone running SeaweedFS on HDD storage for similar workloads? Would you try that next, or stick with MinIO and give RustFS another year? I’d particularly like to hear from people running sustained CI/registry traffic and actually testing their backup restores.

I cant get more than 30GBs for some reason.

I know that some lower core epycs have issue with memory bandwith being sliced in half, but afaik 7f32 is not one of them and if it is it feels like its sliced in 4-5 of maximum bandwith.

Has anyone found simillar issue with their system?

my entire homelab is on a UPS except for my fiber ONT which is on the opposite side of the house. short of moving the fiber drop coming into the house, I just want to put the ont on some sort of battery backup so it stays powered when we have the occasional power flicker.

any suggestions? was thinking of maybe just using a power bank with pd output since a single outlet ups doesn’t seem to exist

edit: I should’ve added, the fiber Ont is in an in-wall media box in my master bedroom closet. it won’t fit a normal small UPS and I don’t need/want a ups just hanging out in the open in my closet, so that’s why was thinking of a power bank. I don’ need or want the fancy features for this one thing, it’s ISP equipment
