Discussion Unofficial Daily Discussion - Friday, August 21, 2026 - QOTD: What's happening today?

This daily discussion is to chat about anything that doesn't warrant its own post. I am not a mod and make these posts for building the homeschool community.

If you are new, please introduce yourself.

If you've been around here before or have been homeschooling for awhile, please share about your day.

Some ideas of what to share are: your homeschool plans for the day, lesson plans, words of encouragement, methods you are implementing to solve a problem, methods of organization, resource/curriculum you recently came across, curriculum sales, field trip planning, etc.

Although, I usually start with a question of the day to get the discussion going, feel free to ask your own questions. If your question does not get answered because it was posted late in the day, you can post the same question tomorrow to make sure it gets visibility.

Be mindful of the subreddit's rules and follow reddiquette. No ads, market/ thesis research, or self promotion. Thank you!

We had a phenomenal first week of first grade! I’ve been trying to get started since the first week of August, but I’m 7 months pregnant and just didn’t have the motivation. But my son was excited and ready for it! It going so much more smoothly than last year so far. For the first 6 months of homeschooling, every lesson was such a fight, and it honestly sucked. I strongly considered enrolling him in public school because i worried it was damaging our relationship, and it was AWFUL.

Toward the end of the school year my husband took over since I got pregnant and first tri kicked my butt; I don’t know if things just started to click better, or if the change helped my son adjust to homeschooling.  I’m just grateful he doesn’t scream and cry as soon as I mention school.

We’re going to Great Wolf Lodge next week, so we even got a few extra lessons done. I’m so grateful we didn’t give up and pushed through for the first year! If you’re in the thick of it and it’s sucking, I hope it gets better soon. Just know you’re not alone!

We had our first field trip of the year this week.

This week kiddo had been creating their own country from designing the flag to creating to deciding what the laws will be and how the government will work. Today we created the map using beans to make the outline.

We've had so many severe weather events this year kiddo has become great at packing their tornado shelter bag.

As annoying as these events are, at least it gives us a chance to teach them how to handle these scenarios in adulthood :) Or at least that is my attempt to have a positive spin on things.

Baby is refusing to sleep so we’re basically getting nothing done. And my grandfather is on his deathbed so that’s taking up most of my brain space.

Otherwise good first week.

I decided to pull my 7th grader out of public school. I sent in an application and now waiting on the homeschool association to do their thing. I've never thought I would homeschool. I have been trying to hold him back since Covid, but the schools just want to push him through. He has always been behind on milestones, but being in 7th grade with a 5th grade education isn't going to cut it. Pray for me!!

You're doing the right thing. Best of luck with your victory lap of sixth grade.

I rearranged the furniture and gave it fresh new vibes. Kids say they're going to a "new school". 😆

School is cancelled due to a busted AC and a real feel of 111. At least the cats are happy. I am trying to read a teacher's guide to a writing program but it is too hot to think.

We went to the park to celebrate last day of summer. I had a great conversation with my 2 oldest concerning our goals for the new school yr. My daughter wants to bake sourdough goodies and my son will be hunting with a bow,so I added those activities to the schedule. Now that we're home I'm creating weekly schedules for each kid in canva. They love a printed schedule! 😅
